For a light user who streams and clears downloads, the lowest option for the exact model may be enough. If you keep large games, photos, videos, or offline media, consider a higher internal capacity. First check the model and regional version: storage choices differ, and a microSD card is available only on some devices.
Start with the exact Galaxy model and its available capacities
There is no single storage range that applies to every Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet. Options vary by model and market. For example, Samsung UK lists the Galaxy S26 Ultra with up to 1TB and the Galaxy S26+ in 256GB and 512GB configurations. Those are examples for the named UK models, not a promise that the same options are sold elsewhere. Check the exact model and regional SKU before deciding.
Also remember that the capacity printed on the box is not all available for your files: the operating system, software, and other data use space. Samsung’s UK planning guidance suggests accounting for about 10GB for files and software updates and adding a 20% buffer. Treat these as Samsung’s recommendations, not fixed requirements for every Galaxy device.
Estimate what you will keep on the device
Think about your habits over the time you expect to own the device. Internal storage is used by apps and games, photos and videos, downloads, and other files. Streaming rather than downloading, periodically removing old files, or transferring media elsewhere can reduce local storage needs; frequent high-resolution recording and offline libraries increase them.

Samsung’s 128GB examples
Samsung UK’s guide, accessed in 2026, estimates that 128GB can hold approximately 900 photos, 60 minutes of UHD video, 1,000 songs, more than 100 apps and games, or approximately 20 movies. These are illustrative estimates from Samsung, not guarantees or independent measurements: file sizes vary. The same guide uses an average photo size of 5MB to illustrate that 1GB could hold about 200 photos, but camera resolution and image settings affect actual sizes. Samsung’s guide describes 64GB as enough for casual users, but that is not a safe blanket recommendation for every current buyer. A collection of large games, frequent video recording, or downloaded media can change the calculation quickly.

Match the capacity to your habits
- Light use: If you mostly stream, install a modest number of apps, and regularly remove or transfer files, the lowest capacity offered for your exact model may work.
- Mixed everyday use: If you keep a photo library, several large apps or games, and some offline media, compare the next capacity tier against the space you expect to use and the headroom you want.
- Heavy local use: If you record lots of high-resolution video, install large games, or retain movies and other media offline, favor more internal storage when available. A card or external drive is not a substitute for internal capacity when apps are the main concern.
These are usage-based scenarios, not guarantees that a particular tier will never fill. App and file sizes differ, and your library can grow during ownership.
When a microSD card helps—and when it does not
Do not assume a Galaxy has a card slot. Samsung says not all Galaxy phones and tablets support microSD, and supported card sizes depend on the exact model. Its UK compatibility table applies to devices sold in the UK or Ireland; other markets can differ. The table lists older S-series support through the S20 generation and says the listed S21 models have no external memory, but that should not be generalized to every Galaxy S, A, Z, or tablet model. A microSD card can provide space for files such as photos, music, and video on a compatible device, but it does not make the phone’s internal storage larger in every respect. Samsung says Galaxy Android devices do not support Adoptable storage, and many apps cannot be moved to a card because eligibility can depend on the app developer. If you mainly need room for apps and games, choose internal capacity accordingly.
Check card type and maximum capacity
Samsung US distinguishes microSD cards (up to 2GB), microSDHC (up to 32GB), and microSDXC (above 32GB through 2TB). It recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video on compatible devices because of its capacity and speed. These format ranges do not mean every Galaxy supports a card of every size: confirm the model’s slot and maximum supported capacity before buying. Tablet expansion can differ from phone expansion
Samsung UK’s tablet comparison lists microSD support up to 2TB for the Galaxy Tab S11, Tab S11 Ultra, Tab S10 FE, Tab S10 FE+, and Tab A11 LTE. The comparison also shows internal capacities ranging from 64GB or 128GB at the entry end to 1TB for the Tab S11 Ultra. A portable SSD can be useful if you regularly transfer or offload large video files and other media. It remains external file storage, not an increase in built-in capacity, and it does not replace internal room for apps. Confirm that the connection and transfer workflow suit your exact device before relying on one. Samsung discusses portable SSDs alongside storage planning in its UK storage guide.

A quick decision checklist
- Identify the exact model and market. Check the available internal capacities for the regional version you plan to buy.
- List what stays local. Consider apps and games, photos, high-resolution video, downloads, and offline music or movies.
- Allow for growth and headroom. Do not plan to use every nominal gigabyte; leave space for software, updates, and files you add later.
- Verify expansion separately. Confirm whether the exact device has a microSD slot and its card limit; count a card as file space, not as internal app storage.
- Choose the tier that fits your use. When you expect to keep substantial apps or media on the device, more internal storage can avoid depending on transfers or cleanup.
