Choose Splinter Cell if you want to play a covert operative and make stealth, infiltration, and gadgets central to the experience. Choose Ghost Recon if you want tactical military shooting built around an elite unit, especially in the expansive environments of newer entries such as Wildlands and Breakpoint. The distinction is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that every game in either franchise plays the same way.
What is the main difference between Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon?
Splinter Cell centers on Sam Fisher, a covert operative, and emphasizes stealth-oriented infiltration. Ubisoft describes the first game as “cinematic stealth action” and classifies the franchise as a stealth shooter. Ghost Recon centers on an elite military unit and tactical shooter play. Its newer direction is particularly suited to players who want to explore broad environments while taking on military missions.

Ubisoft’s retrospective offers a concise distinction. Helene Juguet, then responsible for marketing Ubisoft games in the US, said: “Splinter Cell focuses on a spy, Sam Fisher, and the gameplay has many aspects of the tactical techno-thriller that are the main characteristics of Clancy games.” The retrospective later identifies Juguet as managing director of Ubisoft Film & Television in Paris.
Which series fits the way you want to play?
| If you want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| To play a covert agent and prioritize stealth or infiltration | Splinter Cell | Its premise follows Sam Fisher, and Ubisoft positions the series around stealth action. |
| Tactical military shooting centered on an elite unit | Ghost Recon | The series is built around squad-based military operations. |
| To move through a large environment and approach missions as you choose | Ghost Recon Wildlands | Ubisoft describes Wildlands and Breakpoint as entries that brought vast open worlds and varied environments to the franchise. |
| To play online with friends in a particular older game | Check that game’s current online status first | Some older entries have online co-op or multiplayer features that Ubisoft says are no longer available or supported. |
What do the worlds and missions feel like?
Splinter Cell: covert-agent stealth
The franchise’s defining appeal is the role of a spy conducting covert operations. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Blacklist is one later-series example: Ubisoft describes it as a covert-agent stealth-action game featuring gadgets. It is a concrete option for readers looking for that combination, though its online co-op and multiplayer no longer function.

#1 Best Overall
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Ghost Recon: tactical operations in expansive settings
Ghost Recon Wildlands illustrates the open-world approach. Ubisoft’s announcement describes a four-player special-operations unit operating in a Bolivia-inspired setting, with weapons, vehicles, and drones. Ubisoft also says Wildlands and Breakpoint introduced vast open worlds with varied environments. These examples make Ghost Recon the clearer fit if exploring a large setting and conducting tactical military operations matter more than playing a lone covert agent.
Older entries are not interchangeable with newer ones
These are franchise tendencies, not universal rules. Games released at different times can differ in mission structure, available features, and how they handle solo or squad play. For instance, Ubisoft’s original Ghost Recon page dates that game to November 13, 2001, and lists PC along with shooter, co-op, and multiplayer categories; that product metadata does not establish that its old online modes still work today.

- Incredible real movement and control - you can even shift Sam's weight when preparing him for a split jump between two walls
- Exciting new moves maximize Sam's lethal fighting skills -- spin out of the shadows and kill silently
- All-new moves and levels - fight in jungles, on rooftops, on top of(and under) a moving train
- Advanced AI makes it harder than ever to get past enemies - if you reveal yourself they'll get reinforcements and put on armor
- Weapons now have secondary functions that can be equipped on the fly - be amazed at the advantage you get from the red dot of the laser sight
Does online co-op or multiplayer still work?
Do not assume that an older game’s advertised or remembered multiplayer features are currently usable. Ubisoft explicitly states that Blacklist online co-op and multiplayer no longer function. Its pages for Chaos Theory and Future Soldier also note unavailable or unsupported online features. If playing with friends is essential, verify the status for the exact title, platform, and edition before buying; the franchise name alone cannot answer that question.
Which game should you start with?
Choose Splinter Cell Blacklist for a named stealth example
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Blacklist is a later entry with a covert-agent premise, gadgets, and stealth-action positioning. Ubisoft lists PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U editions. Those are historical platform listings, not a guarantee of current compatibility or regional store availability. Check that the specific edition works on the system you plan to use. Its online co-op and multiplayer are no longer functional.

- OWN YOUR PLAY STYLE: Splinter Cell Blacklist builds on the stealth roots of the franchise, while exploring new directions to embrace the realms of action and adventure. Players can define their personal play styles and be rewarded for those choices.
- TOOLS OF THE TRADE: Fans of stealth will be happy to make the most of Sam's sneaking abilities to abduct and carry enemies, while Killing in Motion allows the player to strike with surgical precision by marking and executing multiple enemies in one fluid motion.
- SPIES VS. MERCS RETURNS: Spies vs. Mercs is back with a new take on asymmetrical gameplay. Players will be able to face off in teams of 4 while creating their very own Spy or Merc according to their playstyles via thorough customization elements. The original Classic Spies vs. Mercs experience also makes its long awaited comeback for the fans.
- COOP: Co-Op is back and bigger than ever with 14 maps & 4 mission types. While you play you also earn in-game currency and unlock additional weapons or gadgets via specialized missions assigned by Grim, Briggs, Charlie and Kobin.
Choose Ghost Recon Wildlands for an open-world squad example
Ghost Recon Wildlands is the clearest named starting point here for tactical squad play in a large environment. Ubisoft’s description of a four-player unit, varied equipment, vehicles, and drones in a Bolivia-inspired world gives a useful sense of its premise. Confirm the edition and platform you intend to play, particularly if you need a particular online feature.
Use the original Ghost Recon as a historical comparison, not an online-service promise
Ubisoft’s product page lists the original Ghost Recon as a PC shooter with co-op and multiplayer categories and gives its release date as November 13, 2001. These listings describe the game’s metadata; they do not promise that its online features remain available or that it will run on a current system.

What can sales figures tell you?
Ubisoft reported that the original Splinter Cell sold 5 million copies worldwide across Xbox, PC, PlayStation 2, and GameCube in its first 10 months. The figure appears in Ubisoft’s 2002–2003 financial report and is a historical company-reported total, not current sales data. It is not a valid head-to-head comparison with Ghost Recon, so it cannot establish which series is more popular today.
