Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony’s AI-assisted upscaling technology for the standard PS5. Sony describes it as an evolution of the PS5 Pro’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), redesigned with a simpler neural-network architecture and an implementation tuned for PS5 performance. The first announced games are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, where QSSR is available as an additional graphics option after a game update.
How AI upscaling works on PS5
Upscaling aims to produce a higher-clarity image from the image a game renders, rather than requiring every output pixel to be rendered in the most demanding way. Sony says PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to improve detail and stability compared with conventional approaches. QSSR adapts that general approach to the standard PS5’s performance constraints.
In Sony’s description, QSSR’s neural-network architecture is less complex than PSSR’s, and its implementation was manually optimized for PS5. The console and game still have to render in real time, so an upscaling method must fit within the performance budget alongside the game’s other graphics work. Sony’s announcement describes the intended improvements qualitatively; it does not publish a QSSR-specific rendering pipeline or performance measurement. Sony’s QSSR announcement
QSSR vs. PSSR: what is the difference?
| Technology | Console | Sony’s description |
|---|---|---|
| QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution) | Standard PS5 | A performance-oriented evolution of PSSR, with a simplified neural-network architecture and a PS5-optimized implementation. Sony says it is intended to improve image detail and stability. |
| PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) | PS5 Pro | Sony’s machine-learning-based upscaling technology for compatible games. Sony describes it as enhancing image clarity and supporting 4K visuals at high frame rates in compatible games. |
Sony calls PSSR its highest-level upscaling technology on PS5 Pro and positions QSSR as a related option for the standard PS5. The names indicate a shared lineage, not identical implementations or identical image results. Sony’s PS5 Pro claims about 4K output and high frame rates apply to compatible games and should not be read as a claim that a game renders natively at 4K. Sony’s PS5 Pro launch announcement describes PSSR as machine-learning based; its PS5 Pro product page and 2026 corporate strategy presentation discuss the Pro’s upscaling capabilities.

Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony’s October 2026 announcement names Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR games. Updates for both add QSSR as an extra graphics option on PS5; Sony’s Japanese announcement dates those updates October 2, 2026. Sony’s Japanese announcement
Because QSSR is added through individual game updates and presented as a game graphics option, support is title-specific. Check that a game has received the relevant update and look in its graphics settings; the announcement does not establish QSSR support for every PS5 game. Sony says it will make the technology broadly available to PlayStation developers, which indicates future potential, not confirmed support in any unnamed game.

What Sony has—and has not—published about QSSR
Sony’s public description establishes the design goal and broad approach, but does not provide a technical specification or controlled comparison. In the announcement, Sony gives no QSSR-specific model architecture, training data, input resolution, precise scaling ratio, latency, per-game performance cost, or quantified image-quality result. It also does not promise a particular frame rate, native 4K rendering, or sharper output in every game.
The announcement includes positive statements from the participating studios. Insomniac Games’ technology lead Mike Fitzgerald says QSSR improves pixel-level sharpness and stability in Marvel’s Wolverine; Sucker Punch Productions’ lead rendering engineer Jasmin Patry describes improved fine detail and temporal stability in Ghost of Yōtei. These are studio assessments in Sony’s announcement, not independent benchmark results. The announcement also describes Sony’s collaboration with AMD as Project Amethyst, focused on applying AI to graphics rendering. Sony’s announcement
