For most newcomers, play DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition first if you want a current, widely listed version with several officially documented presentation and story features. Choose DRAGON QUEST VIII first if its curse-breaking premise and older console-era presentation appeal more—or if you already have access to a version you want to play.
This is a practical recommendation, not a claim that XI S is the better game. The two adventures are distinct, and you do not have to play one before the other.
What is the practical difference between XI S and VIII?
DRAGON QUEST XI S follows the Luminary on a large-scale fantasy adventure. Its Definitive Edition offers character-specific scenarios, Japanese voice acting, a choice of music that includes an orchestral arrangement, and the option to switch between 2D and 3D presentation. Square Enix’s official XI S page describes these edition features.
DRAGON QUEST VIII centers on a journey to pursue Dhoulmagus, who transforms the people of Trodain and curses the King and princess. The party includes Yangus, Jessica, and Angelo, according to Square Enix’s official description.

Choose XI S if access and edition options matter most
Square Enix lists XI S for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, and the Epic Games Store in its platform announcement. That broad official listing makes it the more straightforward starting point for many players choosing among currently listed platforms. Check your local storefront for availability and price.
The Definitive Edition is also an easy fit if you want a choice of presentation and music, Japanese voice acting, or extra character-focused scenarios. Square Enix’s XI S FAQ says the story and remaining game content are the same across the current platform versions it lists.

- Perfectly balanced turn-based battles and an impressive scope of activities as you explore a massive, gorgeous world
- The option for fully orchestrated field and battle tunes, and the ability to change between HD and retro-inspired 16-bit visuals.

Choose VIII if its story hook is the one you want
If a party pursuing Dhoulmagus to undo a curse sounds more compelling to you than the Luminary’s destiny-led adventure, start with VIII. Its official description establishes the premise and names several companions, but does not settle which version is currently available or best for you in every region.
Check your platform before deciding
XI S has an official listing spanning Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC storefronts. VIII is a legacy release, and its current availability and price can depend on your country and the version or platform you are considering. Check your local store before making the choice; the available information here does not establish a universal best version of VIII.

Does one game need to come before the other?
No required order is established for a newcomer choosing between these two adventures. The recommendation for XI S is based on its broad current platform listing and documented edition options, not on a claim that VIII requires prior knowledge or that XI S is objectively superior.
