To protect your Wordle record when you switch devices or browsers, sign in to the same New York Times account before you play. Unsigned progress is stored on the device and can be lost; signing in makes saved progress, statistics, and streaks available across devices. It does not preserve a streak if you miss or fail to solve the daily puzzle.
How Wordle streaks and saved progress work
There are two different things to protect: the record of your play and the consecutive daily solves that make up a streak. Account syncing helps keep your saved progress and stats available when you change devices. The streak itself still depends on solving each daily puzzle.
The New York Times Help Center says unsigned game progress is stored locally rather than on your account, which can cause you to lose progress. When you are signed in, the account can provide access to saved progress, statistics, and streaks on other devices. See the New York Times Games subscription help page and its guidance on playing across devices and browsers.
| How you play | Changing devices or browsers | Where progress is stored | Risk to saved stats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Signed in to your NYT account | NYT says saved progress, statistics, and streaks are accessible after changing devices when you log in to the account. | On the account | Less dependent on data in one browser; use the same account on each device. |
| Not signed in | Progress may not follow you to another device or browser. | Locally on the device | NYT says local progress can be lost; the secondary FAQ identifies clearing browser data, changing browsers, and private browsing as possible loss scenarios. |
Keep your Wordle progress when changing devices
- On the device where you usually play, check that you are signed in. Use the New York Times account associated with the game record you want to keep.
- On the new device or browser, sign in to that same account. NYT’s stated instruction is: “To play across multiple devices and web browsers, log in to your New York Times account.”
- Check the game record before relying on the new setup. Confirm that the saved progress, statistics, or streak you expect is visible. NYT documents account access across devices, but does not provide a separate step-by-step migration procedure.
Avoid losing progress stored only in your browser
If you play without signing in, your record depends on local browser storage. NYT warns that this progress can be lost. A secondary Wordle FAQ specifically names clearing browser history or data, switching browsers, and using a private or incognito window as situations that may result in missing stats. Avoid those changes while relying on unsigned, local-only progress.

If your stats disappear, first check whether you are on the expected device and signed into the account that holds your game record. If the account or a technical issue seems to be involved, contact NYT Games support. The published account guidance explains storage and syncing, but does not promise that a missing streak can be restored.
Remember the puzzle still has to be solved
Syncing protects access to a saved record; it does not substitute for playing. A secondary Wordle FAQ describes the game as a five-letter word puzzle with six guesses: green marks a correct letter in the correct position, yellow marks a letter in the answer but in a different position, and gray marks a letter not in the answer. It also says that failing to guess the word within six tries breaks the current streak. Finish the puzzle before the next daily puzzle replaces it; the available guidance does not establish a universal reset time or timezone.

Do you need a subscription to play Wordle?
No Games subscription is required to play Wordle: the NYT Help Center lists it among its free daily games. This does not mean every related feature is free; the same help page says full Wordle Bot features require a qualifying subscription.
