Update the encoder, start it, and wait for YouTube’s preview. If the encoder connects but YouTube reports a stream-health error, troubleshoot the URL, protocol, or media format instead of treating every failure as a bad key.
Identify what “rejected stream key” means
That phrase alone does not identify the cause. Note the encoder’s exact error and whether it reports a successful connection. An encoder startup error points first to the key or encoder configuration. If the feed reaches YouTube and Live Control Room displays an ingestion or stream-health warning, follow that specific warning; it may concern transport or media format rather than credentials.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as private: do not post it or share it. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
Copy the key and URL for the intended event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live → Stream, then open the stream or scheduled event you intend to use. You can also open Live Control Room and select that event.
- Copy its current stream key into the encoder’s Stream Key field. Copy the server URL associated with the same stream into the encoder’s server or URL field; do not combine a key from one event with a URL from another.
- If the key was reset, replace the old value in the encoder with the newly generated key. YouTube says channel owners and managers can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, click Go live there after the preview appears.
YouTube allows a custom stream key to be reused, but a reset makes the previously configured value stale. See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.

Check RTMP versus RTMPS and the server URL
A correct key can still fail if the encoder is sending it to the wrong server or using the wrong protocol. If the encoder offers a YouTube RTMPS preset, select it and enter the key when prompted. For manual configuration, retrieve the RTMPS URL from the lock icon in Live Control Room’s Stream URL field and enter that exact URL. The interface may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default, so check which one the encoder is using.
- SSL or encryption error: Verify that both the selected protocol and server URL use RTMPS. YouTube says to try port 443 for relevant SSL errors.
- Connection timeout: Check the encoder’s own documentation to confirm it supports RTMPS. A timeout does not, by itself, prove the key is invalid.

If YouTube connects, inspect the stream format
A feed that reaches YouTube can still trigger an ingestion error. If Live Control Room reports Incorrect stream format, set video to H.264 and audio to AAC. YouTube’s general encoder guidance also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart.
Do not choose a bitrate from the error alone. YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, and the setting must also fit the encoder and available upload capacity. Check the complete stream-health message and YouTube’s Live streaming error messages before changing bitrate or other quality settings.

Confirm the channel can start a live stream
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days to live stream. If the event cannot start even after the encoder is configured, check channel eligibility as well as the encoder error. YouTube recommends setting up ahead of time, checking the preview before starting the event, and monitoring audio, video, and stream health. See YouTube live streaming tips.
Common symptoms and fixes

When the encoder uses account sign-in instead of a key
Some third-party encoder integrations sign in to YouTube rather than asking for a stream key. If yours has no key field, do not try to paste a key into an unrelated setting. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to contact the software provider for help with a keyless third-party integration. Because the encoder and its version are not specified here, its exact compatibility and error cause cannot be determined. If you need product-specific help, provide the encoder name and version, the complete error text, and whether you are using a scheduled stream or another YouTube feature.
