Start the broadcast, confirm that Wowza receives it, then test the viewer playback URL separately. The exact connection and playback URLs depend on your Wowza configuration; there is no universal URL to copy.
How the phone-to-Wowza stream works
Larix Broadcaster encodes and publishes video from your phone; Wowza receives that feed and makes it available for playback. The documented Larix-to-Wowza Streaming Engine example uses RTMP. Streaming Engine is self-managed server software, while Wowza Video is a hosted service with its own setup flow and encoder connection details. Follow the instructions for the specific Wowza product you use rather than mixing their settings. Wowza’s Larix tutorial demonstrates the Streaming Engine workflow.
What you need before you start
- A compatible phone: Softvelum lists iOS 16.0 or later and Android 7.0 or later for Larix Broadcaster. Device encoder support and advanced features may vary. Check Larix platform information for current compatibility.
- Larix Broadcaster installed and permission to use the phone’s camera and microphone.
- A Wowza destination with its connection details: server address, port, application name, and stream name or key. For Wowza Video, use the details generated in its hosted setup instead. Wowza Video setup and its encoder connection guide cover that workflow.
- A network that can sustain your chosen video settings. Test at the location where you plan to stream.
Configure Larix and publish to Wowza
- Get the destination values from Wowza. For Streaming Engine, identify the server address, RTMP port, application, and expected stream name. Wowza documents
1935as the default RTMP port, but an installation can use another port. Its general RTMP address shape isrtmp://[address]:[port]/[application]; the stream name is supplied separately. Use the actual instance’s settings, not an example URL. Wowza’s connection URL documentation explains the format. - Create a Larix connection. In Larix, add a connection and enter the RTMP server/application URL and the stream name or key expected by the Wowza application. Larix documents the server/application URL and stream name as parts of the connection information. Labels and screen layout may change between app versions; use the connection fields in the installed version. See Larix documentation.
- Keep credentials private. Treat the stream name/key and any server credentials as secrets. Do not share screenshots or publish a connection URL containing a real key. If a key is exposed, replace it in the destination configuration where possible and update the Larix connection.
- Choose compatible encoding. H.264 video and AAC audio are common compatible choices: Larix describes H.264/AVC and AAC as its standard encoding path, and Wowza lists H.264/AAC-family RTMP inputs. Use the options supported by the actual device and server configuration. Wowza Streaming Engine specifications list supported input formats.
- Start the broadcast. In Larix, select the connection and start streaming. Confirm that Wowza shows the incoming source in the relevant application or source monitor. If it does not, verify the address, port, application, stream name/key, network reachability, and any source security settings against the destination’s own connection details.
- Test viewer playback independently. A successful publish only proves that Wowza is receiving the feed; it does not prove a viewer can play it. The Wowza tutorial demonstrates HLS playback with Larix Player. Construct the playback URL for the configured server, application, stream name, and delivery protocol using the destination’s instructions. The default application instance may be implicit, but configurations differ; do not assume a sample playback URL applies to your setup. Wowza’s URL guidance explains the relevant components.
Choose a starting bitrate for the phone and network
Larix’s FAQ gives these resolution-based bitrate suggestions. They are vendor configuration guidance, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee that a particular mobile connection can sustain the stream. The selected bitrate is an encoder target; test with the network and location you will actually use. Larix FAQ.
| Resolution | Larix bitrate suggestion |
|---|---|
| 2160 | 4500 Kbps |
| 1080 | 3000 Kbps |
| 720 | 2000 Kbps |
| 540 | 1500 Kbps |
| 480 | 1000 Kbps |
| 360 | 700 Kbps |
| 288 | 500 Kbps |
| 144 | 300 Kbps |
Larix says to halve those listed values when using HEVC and multiply them by 1.6 for 50 fps or higher. These adjustments do not remove the need to check device support, server compatibility, and network stability. Start with a short test; if you see frame loss or unstable delivery, lower the target resolution or bitrate. Larix’s FAQ describes worsening network conditions as a cause of frame loss for RTMP/RTSP and discusses an adaptive-bitrate option.

RTMP or SRT?
Use RTMP for the documented Larix-to-Streaming Engine workflow above. Larix also supports SRT publishing in Caller/Push, Listen, and Rendezvous modes, but that is not a drop-in replacement for an RTMP address: the Wowza input path and connection details must be set up for SRT. Availability of SRT input options depends on the particular Wowza deployment; the cited documentation does not establish that every account or installation exposes the same choices. Larix platform information describes its protocol support, and Wowza’s specifications describe supported inputs.
Troubleshoot common connection and playback failures
- Larix cannot connect: Recheck the server address, port, application, and stream name/key character by character. Confirm that the server is reachable from the phone’s network and that source security settings allow the connection.
- Wowza does not show an incoming source: Confirm you are checking the right application and stream name. Verify that the phone is actually publishing and that you used values for the specific Streaming Engine instance or Wowza Video workflow.
- Wowza receives the feed but viewers cannot play it: Treat playback as a separate configuration step. Check the delivery protocol, playback URL components, application, and stream name against the configured output; a publish URL is not necessarily a viewer URL.
- Video stutters or frames are lost: Test the same settings on the intended network. Reduce resolution or bitrate if the link cannot sustain the target, and consider Larix’s adaptive-bitrate option where available.
- Audio or video is missing: Check Larix camera and microphone permissions, verify the selected encoders are supported by the phone and destination, and confirm the Wowza input configuration accepts the chosen formats.
Practical phone setup considerations
A tripod or adjustable phone mount can help keep framing steady for a hands-free session. A phone-compatible external microphone may improve capture in noisy settings, and a power bank may be useful for longer broadcasts. These are optional accessories, not requirements of the Larix–Wowza connection; check connector, mount, and device compatibility before buying.
