YouTube can issue a copyright strike if it removes an active live stream for copyright. Running continuously for 24 hours a day does not exempt a stream from copyright enforcement. A live match warning or interruption is not automatically a strike, though: check YouTube Studio and the official notice to see what action was taken.
What can happen while a live stream is running?
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If its systems identify a match, YouTube may show a warning and replace the stream image with a placeholder. If the matched material continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Those steps are distinct from a copyright strike.
YouTube says a channel receives a copyright strike when an active live stream is removed for copyright through the takedown process. The stream’s 24/7 schedule does not change that distinction or create an exception.
How a live match, Content ID claim, and strike differ
| Mechanism | When it can happen | Possible effect |
|---|---|---|
| Live match | While the stream is running | A warning, placeholder image, interruption, or termination if the issue continues. A match alone is not necessarily a strike. |
| Content ID claim | For an archived live stream, a claim may be made after the stream ends | Depending on the rights holder’s settings, the claim may monetize, track, or block the content. A claim is not itself a strike. |
| Copyright removal request | After a rights holder submits a legal removal request | If YouTube finds the request valid, it removes the content and applies a strike. An active live stream removed for copyright can result in a strike. |
YouTube’s live-stream guidance says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

What a strike means for live access and the channel
YouTube says removal of an active live stream for copyright brings a seven-day restriction on live streaming. If the channel receives another strike, the live-stream restriction becomes 14 days. Three copyright strikes within 90 days can make a channel subject to termination. Check the channel’s YouTube Studio dashboard and the email from YouTube for the status and consequences of a specific case. YouTube Help: Understand copyright strikes.
What to do if YouTube flags or removes your stream
If you see a live match warning or interruption
- Stop using the matched material and review the stream content, including music, video clips, and another live broadcast being rebroadcast.
- Do not assume a warning or interruption means a strike has been issued. Check YouTube Studio and the official email notice for the specific action.
If you receive a scheduled removal request
A scheduled request gives you seven days to act before removal and a strike. YouTube lists options that include deleting the content or seeking a retraction. If you delete the content within that window, the scheduled request will not produce a strike. Review the notice promptly so you understand the deadline and available actions. YouTube Help: About copyright removal requests.

If a strike has already been applied
Deleting the content after a strike is applied does not resolve the strike. YouTube lists Copyright School and waiting 90 days (for channels with fewer than three strikes), a retraction, and a valid counter notification as resolution paths. A counter notification is a legal request; use it only if you believe the removal was mistaken, including because a copyright exception may apply. Consider getting legal advice if you are unsure how the law applies to your use. YouTube Help: Understand copyright strikes and YouTube Help: Submit a copyright counter notification.
How to reduce copyright risk on a continuous stream
- Use material you created, licensed, or otherwise have a lawful basis to use. A 24/7 schedule does not make third-party material safe to use.
- Keep records of licenses and permissions so you can review them if a rights holder challenges your use.
- Monitor YouTube Studio and the email associated with the channel. A warning, claim, scheduled request, and strike have different effects and response windows.
- If you receive a notice, follow the procedure and deadline stated in that notice rather than relying on the stream’s status or deleting content after a strike.
YouTube’s documentation explains its platform procedures; it does not determine whether a particular use is lawful. That depends on the facts and applicable jurisdiction.
