If your Raspberry Pi YouTube stream keeps restarting, the restart messages are a symptom—not the diagnosis. Check the service’s status and journal to find why its process exits, then fix that cause and verify the broadcast separately in YouTube Live Control Room. A service can be active without sending usable video or audio.
1. Capture the failure before changing anything
Replace youtube-stream.service below with your actual unit name. These commands show the current service state and recent log entries from this boot:
sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -b -n 100 --no-pager
Look for the first error around each restart, not only the last “Started” message. Record whether the process exited with a nonzero status, was terminated by a signal, or timed out. Raspberry Pi’s Connect troubleshooting documentation uses the same status-and-journal approach for its own systemd services: Raspberry Pi Connect troubleshooting.
Identify the real unit name
Use the name of the service you enabled or started, including its .service suffix. If you do not know it, list service units with systemctl list-units --type=service and identify the one that runs your encoder or stream script. The example name in this article is not a Raspberry Pi default.

2. Check the unit systemd actually runs
Inspect the effective unit definition and any overrides:
systemctl cat youtube-stream.service
Pay particular attention to ExecStart, User, WorkingDirectory, Environment or EnvironmentFile, and every file or device path referenced by the command. A command that succeeds in an SSH shell can fail as a service because systemd may run it as a different user, from a different directory, or without the shell’s environment variables.

Compare the command’s runtime context with the evidence in the journal. Check that the executable and script exist, the service user can read the media and configuration files, and any camera, capture device, or other input is available to that user. Do not publish or share a YouTube stream key; redact it from command output, screenshots, and logs before asking for help.
3. Match the log message to the likely cause
Treat these as leads to check against your own error output, not as assumptions about every Pi:

| Log or observed failure | What to inspect |
|---|---|
| Executable or script not found | Confirm the absolute path in ExecStart, that the file exists, and that it is executable where needed. |
| Permission denied or input cannot be opened | Check the service’s User, file permissions, device access, and whether the service user can reach the media or capture source. |
| Invalid option, argument, or configuration | Compare the exact command and arguments in ExecStart with the encoder’s accepted options; use the journal’s error rather than guessing at a replacement command. |
| Missing variable or configuration value | Check how the unit supplies its environment. Interactive shell variables are not automatically available to a system service. |
| Network or ingest error | Check connectivity and the stream configuration. A failure at the YouTube ingest end may not be solved by changing a local file path or restart policy. |
| Timeout or process killed by a signal | Use the surrounding journal entries to determine what timed out or sent the signal, and check whether the service or another process imposes that limit. |
Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation provides device and boot diagnostics context, but a restart loop alone does not establish a hardware fault: Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation.
4. Set the restart policy for the process you have
Restart= tells systemd what to do after a service process exits; it does not repair the command, its inputs, or its connection. The systemd service manual defines Restart=no as the default, Restart=on-failure as restarting defined failures, and Restart=always as restarting after clean exits as well as failures. See the systemd.service manual.

- Powerful Single Board Computer: Equipped with 4GB RAM and high-performance processor, delivers fast running speed for 4K playback, AI projects, programming and daily computing tasks. SANOOV for raspberry pi 5 4GB is equipped with broadcom 64 quad-core Arm Cortex A76 processor with gigabit ethernet and upgraded with IEEE 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 dual-band 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz and Power Over Ethernet (POE). Upgrading delivers 2-3 x speed vs Pi 4, redefining the experience
- Efficient Active Cooler: Effectively lowers operating temperature and prevents performance throttling. Runs quietly even under long-time heavy load, ensures stable operation all day long. SANOOV RPi 5 4GB kit offer an active cooler, which combines an aluminium heatsink with a high-performance PWM fan. Active cooler is fully compatible with the Pi OS, which can effectively reduce the temperature of RPi5 and ensure its good performance during long-term high load operation
- Sturdy ABS Protective Case: Well-fitted for Raspberry Pi 5 board, can be secured with 4 screws to effectively protect the Pi 5 motherboard from damage, reserves full access to all ports and buttons. SANOOV uses ABS material to produce the case, which has a softer texture and feel. Meanwhile, SANOOV case adopts a layered design for easy disassembly and installation. (Tip: The Case cannot install M.2 HAT Add on Board and Solid State Drive!)
- Wide Application & Full Compatibility: Seamlessly compatible with official OS and mainstream peripheral accessories for Raspberry Pi 5. Whether you are a beginner, student, electronics hobbyist or professional developer, this all-in-one kit meets your diverse needs. It excels in IoT projects, robotics design, retro gaming devices, home media servers and other DIY creations. Backed by a large global community, you can easily find guides, technical support and shared projects online
| Setting | Effect | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
Restart=no |
Does not automatically restart the process. | Useful when you want a failure to remain visible for diagnosis or the service is meant to run once. |
Restart=on-failure |
Restarts on defined failure conditions, rather than after every clean exit. | Often easier to reason about for a long-running encoder when a clean exit is not expected; confirm that this matches your intended behavior. |
Restart=always |
Restarts after a clean exit as well as after failure, signal termination, or timeout. | Use only when a clean exit should also cause the process to run again. |
An optional RestartSec= delay spaces out attempts; it cannot fix a persistent error. Choose a delay only after you understand why the process exits. The installed systemd version’s manual is the relevant reference if you need version-specific behavior.
5. Apply a unit change and inspect the result
- Edit the unit or its override to correct the cause indicated by the logs. Avoid changing several unrelated settings at once; that makes it harder to tell which change mattered.
- Reload systemd’s unit configuration after editing a unit file:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload - Restart the service and inspect fresh evidence:
sudo systemctl restart youtube-stream.service sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service --no-pager sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -b -n 100 --no-pager
If systemd reports that the start limit has been hit, that is not proof the underlying issue is fixed. The start-rate limit prevents repeated rapid attempts; read the failure result and logs to identify the original cause before clearing a failed state. See the systemd.unit manual on start-rate limiting.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
6. Verify the YouTube broadcast independently
An active service state means systemd sees a running process; it does not prove the encoder has valid input or that YouTube is receiving a usable stream. Check the encoder’s output for input, encoding, and ingest errors, then inspect the stream’s status in YouTube Live Control Room. If the process remains active but the broadcast is absent or unhealthy, investigate the encoder output, media or capture source, and stream configuration rather than treating the systemd state as proof of a successful broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 loop of uploaded videos on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining a Pi-based service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo, then start the free day.
