You can run FFmpeg on an OVHcloud VPS to send a continuous devotional video or audio feed to YouTube Live. The chain is: keep your media on the VPS, have FFmpeg encode or pass it through, and publish to YouTube’s ingest server using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. For a reliable setup, confirm the channel is eligible, use RTMPS and YouTube-compatible settings, supervise FFmpeg, and plan separately for interruptions and replay archiving. No particular OVHcloud VPS tier can be recommended without checking its current specifications against your workload.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel verified for live streaming, with no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube also sets a minimum age of 16 to live stream. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live streaming help, as platform rules can change.
  • An OVHcloud VPS with enough sustained CPU capacity if you plan to transcode, plus suitable memory, storage, and network capacity for your media and stream. The right fit depends on source resolution and frame rate, number of streams, and whether you will record locally; do not select a tier based on the provider name alone.
  • Devotional media you are entitled to stream, in a format FFmpeg can read. Include the rights to the specific song, recording, performance, reading, artwork, and video—not only the underlying composition where relevant.
  • FFmpeg installed on the VPS, YouTube Studio access, and a way to supervise and inspect the streaming process.

Set up the YouTube Live event and protect its stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming workflow, create or select the stream/event, and complete any channel setup required before going live.
  2. Copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown for the event. Use the server URL YouTube supplies; do not substitute a guessed endpoint or expose the key in public configuration, screenshots, shared scripts, or logs. Treat it like a password.
  3. Use the event’s controls and Live Control Room to verify that YouTube is receiving the encoder feed and that the intended event is live. To end the broadcast, stop sending content from the encoder and confirm the event state in Studio.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance recommends RTMPS for ordinary live delivery. RTMPS is RTMP over an SSL connection; the ingest URL must use the RTMPS scheme and a valid YouTube endpoint and app path on port 443. Use the URL from Studio rather than building one by hand. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation.

Choose the FFmpeg approach and YouTube settings

There are two broad ways to send media. Which is appropriate depends on the actual files and the continuity you need; neither guarantees seamless looping without testing.

Approach What FFmpeg does Main consideration
Transcode Decodes the source and encodes it to a chosen YouTube-compatible video and audio profile. Gives you output control, but needs CPU capacity for the selected resolution and frame rate.
Stream copy or remux Passes compatible encoded streams through, potentially changing the container or transport without re-encoding. Uses less encoding work, but only works when the source codecs and stream characteristics suit YouTube and the intended loop.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Choose resolution and bitrate from YouTube’s current encoder settings table and your VPS’s actual sustained upload capacity, rather than relying on a universal FFmpeg bitrate. The guidance also recommends testing representative audio and motion before going live, then watching stream health during the event. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

For a devotional channel, test the parts that are easy to miss in a static video: quiet passages, loudness changes, long silences, motion, transitions between clips, and the loop boundary. If your files do not share compatible codecs, timestamps, or durations, a pass-through approach may fail or create a discontinuity; transcoding can give more control but increases CPU demand. The correct settings must be validated with your own files and VPS.

Run and supervise the stream on the VPS

  1. Place the media files on VPS storage and confirm the service account running FFmpeg can read them. Keep any credentials, especially the YouTube stream key, out of world-readable files and routine logs.
  2. Configure FFmpeg for the selected transcode or copy approach, the YouTube-provided ingest URL and key, and the compatible settings you chose. Validate with a representative test rather than assuming a command will fit every file or event.
  3. Run FFmpeg under an operating-system service manager or supervisor so an unexpected process exit is detected and can be restarted. Configure useful logs and alerting; make sure a restart does not inadvertently create an unwanted second event or leave the broadcast in an unexpected state.
  4. During a test and after launch, check both the process and YouTube Live Control Room. Watch for encoder exits, ingest disconnects, stream-health warnings, audio/video problems, and disk growth if you are recording locally.
  5. Document how an operator checks the event, restores service, rotates an exposed key, and verifies whether a restarted encoder has resumed the intended broadcast. Do not assume a restart will reconnect seamlessly.

This is an operational design, not a tested configuration for a particular OVHcloud instance. Continuous operation depends on the VPS, network, source files, encoder load, supervision, and YouTube event state.

Select an OVHcloud VPS for the actual workload

Before choosing a plan, estimate whether FFmpeg will transcode in software, the output resolution and frame rate, concurrent stream count, storage for media and any local archive, and expected continuous upload rate. Then check OVHcloud’s current regional availability, CPU, RAM, storage, network terms, and price for the plan you are considering. OVHcloud’s contract index is not a plan comparison or a performance benchmark, so it does not establish that a specific tier is adequate for continuous FFmpeg use.

Plan for copyright checks and YouTube interruptions

YouTube’s live-stream terms require the content provider to hold the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of the content, including relevant music licensing rights. A religious subject, purchased file, public-domain composition, or license does not automatically clear every recording, performance, territory, or use. Check the terms that apply to each element of your stream. See YouTube’s Terms of Service.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may produce a placeholder image, warning, interruption, or termination. If you have licensed third-party material, the relevant rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID; holding a license alone may not prevent an interruption. Review YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance and resolve rights issues before relying on a 24/7 broadcast.

Do not rely on one 24/7 broadcast as your archive

YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” YouTube also warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 stream is therefore not a dependable way to create a complete replay. If preservation matters, make a separate local recording and test its storage growth, file integrity, and retention. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and its encoder setup instructions.

Shorter scheduled broadcasts can make individual replays more practical, but they introduce planned stops and restarts. Choose a schedule based on whether uninterrupted availability or dependable replay files matter more to your channel.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause to check What to do
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed Incorrect server URL or stream key, wrong event selection, connection issue, or an invalid RTMPS URL. Copy the URL and key again from the intended event in Studio, keep the key private, verify RTMPS and the supplied endpoint/path, and check Live Control Room.
FFmpeg exits or repeatedly restarts Unreadable media, incompatible input, resource pressure, or an unhandled process failure. Inspect the service logs, check file access and available VPS resources, test the media separately, and use a supervisor with operator alerts.
Stream health reports poor or unstable delivery Encoder settings or sustained VPS upload capacity may not match the selected output. Compare the chosen resolution, bitrate, CBR behavior, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current settings guidance; assess actual VPS capacity and retest.
Playback breaks at a clip boundary Input files may differ in codec, timestamps, duration, or other characteristics needed for the chosen loop method. Test each transition and the loop boundary. Consider normalizing sources through transcoding if the VPS has capacity; do not assume stream copy can join arbitrary files seamlessly.
Live content is replaced or the stream is interrupted YouTube may have detected third-party content or a rights issue. Review Studio notices, verify rights for the exact material, and contact the rights holder about channel allowlisting where appropriate.
No complete YouTube replay appears The single stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. Use a separate local recording or shorter scheduled broadcasts, then verify the resulting files and replay workflow.
A restart does not restore the expected live event The encoder process recovered, but YouTube’s event or ingest state may not have resumed as expected. Check Live Control Room and the service logs, confirm the intended event state, and follow the documented operator recovery procedure.
