Yes—if the mini PC can handle your specific stream without sustained overload, and its measured wall-power cost fits your budget. The processor’s TDP is not the power draw of the whole computer, so measure the system while it runs the actual workload and calculate electricity cost using your local tariff.

First distinguish the workload: encoding a live camera or other source, looping prerecorded video, and simply watching a YouTube stream on the PC are different tasks. This guide focuses on keeping a YouTube live stream running, including the trade-offs between a local mini PC and a cloud service.

What does “run a 24/7 stream” mean?

  • Encode a live source: The PC receives video and audio, encodes them, and sends the output to YouTube. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  • Loop prerecorded video: The stream plays uploaded or stored recordings as a live broadcast. This may involve a different workflow from encoding a camera feed; YouTube’s encoder help page also identifies a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos.
  • Watch YouTube locally: Playing someone else’s stream on a mini PC is not the same as broadcasting your own channel continuously.

The advice on measuring power applies to all three, but the computer capability and service requirements depend on which one you intend to do.

Can a low-power mini PC handle it?

It can be a plausible encoder, but “low power” alone does not establish that it can reliably run your chosen stream around the clock. Load varies with the source, resolution, frame rate, codec, overlays, audio, and whether encoding is hardware-accelerated. No specific mini PC has been tested here, and no general claim can establish that every Intel N100 system—or every other low-power model—can encode every workload.

Intel lists the N100 processor at 6 W TDP in its processor specifications. That is a processor specification, not a measurement of a complete mini PC at the wall. Memory, storage, motherboard, networking, cooling, and the power supply all contribute to system consumption. Intel explains how to find processor TDP or Processor Base Power in its TDP guidance.

Evaluate the complete candidate system under your intended streaming workload. Look for enough processing or hardware-encoding capability to avoid sustained overload, suitable ports and network connectivity, acceptable fan noise and cooling, warranty support, and stable operation during a representative test.

How to estimate the electricity cost

Measure average AC power at the wall while the computer runs the actual streaming software, source, resolution, frame rate, and codec. A plug-in energy meter is one practical option. Let the measurement cover representative operation rather than relying on an idle reading.

  1. Record the average wall draw in watts during the intended workload.
  2. Calculate annual energy use: average watts × 8,760 ÷ 1,000 = annual kWh.
  3. Multiply annual kWh by the price per kWh on your electricity bill to estimate annual electricity cost.
  4. If comparing a local PC with a cloud service, add any separate service fee to the cloud option’s cost.

This is an arithmetic estimate, not a universal price. Your tariff, measured system draw, and actual operating hours determine the result. Do not substitute the N100’s 6 W TDP, an adapter’s maximum output, or idle-only consumption for measured whole-system power.

Configure and test a mini PC encoder

  1. Choose the workload and target settings. Decide whether you are encoding a live feed or sending another source, then set the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, overlays, and audio in your streaming software. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance describes supported video options including H.264, H.265, and AV1.
  2. Set up the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
  3. Enter the connection details in your encoder. Use the stream URL and key supplied by YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS; select it where your encoder and connection support it.
  4. Test with representative content. Include motion and audio, and run the stream at the settings you intend to keep. YouTube recommends testing upload speed, then checking the stream’s health rather than assuming that a successful start proves the setup is stable.
  5. Monitor the system and broadcast. Check for encoder overload, dropped frames, thermal problems, audio issues, and changes in YouTube stream health. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into formats for viewers, but the local PC still needs to deliver its chosen source and encoder output reliably.
  6. Plan for interruptions. Decide who will notice a failure and how the encoder will be restarted after a network or power interruption. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive guidance is not evidence that a stream can be left running indefinitely without interruption.

When a local mini PC makes sense

A mini PC is worth considering when you need to encode a live source locally, want direct control over the encoder and its settings, and can monitor the system and maintain a recovery plan. Its actual electricity cost can be attractive, but only a wall measurement and your tariff can show whether it is cheap for you.

Compare candidate setups on workload fit, measured operating expense, recovery after network or power loss, thermal stability, noise, ports, network connection, space, upfront cost, and warranty. A low processor TDP alone cannot settle those comparisons.

Troubleshoot a mini PC stream

  • The encoder overloads or drops frames: The chosen workload may exceed what the PC can sustain. Check the encoder’s load and YouTube stream health, then test lower resolution or frame rate, a supported hardware-encoding option, or a more capable system.
  • The stream starts but health is poor: Test upload speed and inspect the full path, including the network connection and encoder output. Re-test with the same motion and audio as the planned broadcast.
  • The stream stops after a power or network interruption: A local setup needs a recovery plan and an operator or automation able to restore it. Do not treat YouTube’s under-12-hour archive rule as a continuity guarantee.
  • The measured cost seems implausibly low: Confirm the meter is measuring the whole system at the wall during active streaming, not just idle use or the processor specification. Recalculate with the tariff on your bill.
