You can make a YouTube livestream members-only in YouTube Studio, but YouTube does not promise an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. First enable channel memberships and live streaming, then create a stream with visibility set to Members only. To keep it running continuously, you also need a feed source and an encoder or cloud streaming service that can be monitored and recovered.
Before you start: check channel eligibility
- Your channel must have channel memberships enabled, and it must meet YouTube’s live-streaming requirements: verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Membership levels and perks are subject to YouTube’s policies and review. If memberships are not available in Studio, resolve eligibility first rather than building the broadcast around a feature you cannot yet use.
- If you have never livestreamed before, YouTube says enabling live streaming may take up to 24 hours. Check access before the planned start time.
Set up a membership level and perk
- In YouTube Studio, open Earn → Memberships.
- Create a membership level, add and publish its perks, and include a members-only livestream perk. YouTube allows up to six membership levels; higher-priced levels inherit perks from lower-priced levels. See YouTube’s membership levels and perks guide.
Create a members-only livestream
- On a computer, open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live.
- Configure the broadcast, then set its visibility to Members only.
- Choose All paid members or a particular membership level and above. The level choice determines which paying members can watch.
- Schedule the stream or start it. Members are notified as with regular subscriber broadcasts. Nonmembers may see the broadcast’s metadata, but cannot watch the members-only stream.
This is the simplest documented workflow when the entire broadcast should be restricted to members. YouTube documents this members-only visibility option for desktop streams that are not vertical. See YouTube’s members-only livestream instructions.
Keep the feed running continuously
Members-only visibility controls who can watch; it does not create or maintain the video feed. For an always-on broadcast, a source must keep sending video and audio to YouTube. YouTube supports both software encoders and standalone hardware encoders, so dedicated hardware is optional. Configure the encoder with the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio, then start it and confirm the preview before relying on it.
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive threshold, not a promise that a single stream can run forever or that a 24/7 feed will never disconnect. Plan for monitoring and recovery. For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead, starting it at least 15 minutes before the event, checking the preview, and continuously monitoring audio and video. Those checks are useful for a continuous broadcast as well, though YouTube presents them as event-planning advice. Details are in YouTube’s encoder setup guide and livestreaming tips.

Protect the stream key
Treat the stream key as a credential: use the key for the intended broadcast in the encoder’s stream settings, and do not publish or share it. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder before restarting the feed.
Choose the feed method for the job
- Software encoder: useful when you need to control a local production or encode a feed from a computer. The computer and its network connection must remain available for the stream to continue.
- Hardware encoder: a dedicated option for production workflows that call for separate encoding equipment. It is not a YouTube requirement; YouTube also supports software encoders.
- Cloud continuous-streaming service: can play uploaded prerecorded video without relying on a home computer to keep encoding. YouTube’s encoder guide names Gyre as an example in this category, but that reference does not establish that a service supports members-only access or guarantees uptime. Confirm how the service connects to YouTube and how visibility is configured in Studio.
Option: begin publicly, then switch to members-only
If you want a public introduction before restricting access, YouTube lets you start a public stream and schedule a transition to members-only in Live Control Room. This is a different workflow from creating a members-only stream from the outset.

- Start or schedule the public broadcast, then use the transition option in Live Control Room.
- Choose a countdown of 1, 5, 10, 15, 30, or 60 minutes. When the countdown ends, members move into the members-only stream and nonmembers are prompted to join.
- Use the same stream key for the two streams. YouTube reports the public and members-only portions separately in Analytics.
YouTube says this transition is unavailable for vertical livestreams and recommends testing it with an unlisted stream first. If you do not want a public segment, set the stream to Members only when creating it instead. See YouTube’s current transition instructions.
Troubleshooting a members-only always-on stream
- The Members only visibility option is missing: check that memberships are enabled and available to the channel, and that you are configuring the stream on a computer. The documented feature does not cover vertical livestreams.
- Live streaming is not enabled: verify the channel and check its live-streaming standing. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not wait until broadcast time.
- The encoder will not connect: confirm that it has the current stream URL and key from Studio, that the encoder is running, and that the selected stream is open in Live Control Room. If a key was reset or exposed, update the encoder with the replacement.
- Viewers cannot watch: check the stream’s visibility and selected membership audience. A nonmember cannot watch a members-only broadcast even if its metadata is visible.
- The stream stops or the archive is shorter than expected: YouTube does not promise uninterrupted perpetual playback. Check the source, encoder, and network, then restart the feed and verify the preview. The under-12-hour automatic archive guidance is not a 24/7 reliability guarantee.
- The public-to-members transition does not work: confirm that you are using Live Control Room, not a vertical stream, and test the transition with an unlisted broadcast before using it for a real audience.
