To loop an MP4 indefinitely with FFmpeg, place -stream_loop -1 before the input it applies to: ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv OUTPUT_URL. This is an illustrative continuous-output command, not a universal destination-ready recipe. A loop option repeats the input; it does not guarantee that the join will be free of a black frame. The result depends on the source, output path and playback or streaming client.
Loop an MP4 indefinitely with FFmpeg
-stream_loop is an input option. FFmpeg documents it as: “Set number of times input stream shall be looped.” Use -1 for an infinite loop and 0 for no repeat. Put it before the -i for the input you want to repeat; FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, so order matters. FFmpeg command-line documentation
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv OUTPUT_URL
Replace input.mp4 with your file and OUTPUT_URL with a destination that accepts the selected output format and codecs. This example encodes video with H.264 and audio with AAC into FLV, but those choices may not suit your target. Check its requirements before using the command; the example does not promise compatibility with every endpoint, FFmpeg build or MP4.
Make a finite output instead
An infinite input loop does not specify a finite output duration. If you want a bounded file, decide how many repeats or how much output time you need, use a finite approach appropriate to the target, and verify the resulting file. The FFmpeg command-line documentation describes the loop counts, but does not provide a complete finite-MP4 recipe for every use case.

Why a black screen may appear at the join
-stream_loop -1 repeats the input; FFmpeg does not document it as a universal black-frame remover. The cause can depend on the actual MP4, its timestamps, whether streams are copied or encoded, the output container, and the player or streaming client. Without the file and playback path, there is no basis for identifying one cause with certainty.
Check the source at both ends
Inspect the last visible frames and the first visible frames. If the video has a black tail or head, looping the whole file repeats that section at every join. A loop option cannot remove black content already present in the source.

Distinguish stream copy from re-encoding
If your command uses -c copy, FFmpeg copies packets without decoding, filtering or encoding them. That path cannot apply a video filter. If the copied output has an unwanted join, compare it with a re-encoded test. Re-encoding allows video processing, but it is a diagnostic option—not a guarantee that every boundary issue will disappear. FFmpeg documentation on stream copy
Verify the option applies to the intended input
Confirm that -stream_loop -1 comes before the relevant -i and that the input being looped is the complete file you intend to repeat. If a command has multiple inputs, option placement determines which input receives the setting.

Test the actual destination
Play the generated output in the intended player, or test the stream at its real destination. A transition that appears only in a particular client cannot be diagnosed from the loop option alone.
Whole-file looping and frame looping are different
Use -stream_loop when the goal is to repeat an input stream or file. FFmpeg’s separate loop video filter repeats a buffered range of frames, so it is a frame-level effect rather than a whole-file replay. The documented example loop=loop=-1:size=1:start=0 repeats the first frame indefinitely; it freezes that frame rather than seamlessly replaying an MP4. FFmpeg video loop filter documentation
