A cloud server protects your YouTube stream from a failure of your home computer only if the encoder is running on the server, not on that computer. If OBS crashes on the cloud server itself, the feed stops unless a separate process supervisor restarts OBS and it reconnects successfully. These are different failure points, and neither a cloud VM’s automatic restart setting nor YouTube’s backup ingest address alone restarts a crashed OBS process.
What cloud hosting does—and does not—protect against
When OBS runs on a cloud VM, your home PC can shut down or lose its internet connection without directly stopping the encoder on the VM. The stream can still fail if OBS exits, the VM or its network becomes unavailable, YouTube rejects the feed, or the live event is no longer accepting it. Cloud hosting removes one dependency; it does not make a stream uninterruptible.

Google Cloud’s documented behavior is specific to provider-level VM termination conditions; it should not be treated as a guarantee that the OBS process, its saved scene, or a YouTube event will recover. Google Cloud’s regionInstanceTemplates reference describes the VM-level setting.
How to run OBS on a cloud VM and prepare recovery
1. Put the encoder and its required media on the VM
Install and configure OBS on the cloud VM, and make sure the media and other assets used by the scene are accessible there. For unattended operation, configure the environment so OBS can run without relying on an interactive desktop session. This is an implementation requirement to plan for, not a guarantee supplied by a VM restart setting.

2. Match OBS to the intended YouTube event
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the intended live stream and use the stream key and ingest details shown for that event. Enter those values in OBS. YouTube explains that stream keys direct the encoder’s feed and allow YouTube to accept it; treat the key as a credential, restrict access, and update OBS if you reset it. 3. Use current ingest settings, not copied addresses
YouTube supports RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its HLS setup documentation also describes a backup server URL for configurations that need backup ingestion. Use the values and protocol appropriate to the current event in Live Control Room rather than hard-coding an address from an old tutorial. A second ingest address is not a substitute for restarting OBS if the encoder process has stopped. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and HLS setup instructions.

4. Add process supervision for OBS
If recovery from an OBS crash is required, configure an application-level supervisor or equivalent service-management mechanism to detect that OBS has exited and attempt a restart. Define restart limits, retain logs, and arrange alerts so repeated failures are visible. Decide how the process will load the correct scene, stream configuration, and credentials, and confirm that it can reconnect to the intended YouTube event. The cited provider documentation does not prescribe an OBS supervisor or guarantee these application-level behaviors.
5. Test recovery before relying on it
- Schedule a private or otherwise controlled test event and confirm that OBS is sending a feed to the intended event.
- Stop or deliberately terminate the OBS process using a controlled test procedure, then check whether the supervisor detects the exit and restarts it.
- Watch OBS and YouTube Live Control Room to see whether the encoder reconnects and whether the event remains active.
- Verify viewer playback in YouTube Studio, inspect logs and alerts, and record any manual action needed to recover.
There is no universal reconnect deadline or guaranteed same-event continuity established here; recovery depends on the OBS configuration, supervisor, network, credentials, ingest, and YouTube event state. Keep an operator able to access the current event and key if automation fails.

Troubleshoot in failure-layer order
- Check the event and feed first. In Live Control Room, determine whether the event is active and receiving a feed. Confirm OBS is using the key for that event, and replace its saved key if you reset the key in YouTube.
- Check whether OBS is running on the VM. If the process exited, bitrate or server changes will not restart it. Review the supervisor’s status and logs, then investigate why its restart did or did not occur.
- If OBS is running but cannot connect, follow the OBS connection guide. Its troubleshooting includes trying another streaming server and reducing video bitrate where appropriate; these steps address connection problems, not a crashed process. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
- Check the VM separately. Confirm its provider-level status and whether any automatic-restart behavior applied. A running or restarted VM is not proof that OBS or YouTube ingest recovered.
- Recheck YouTube’s current ingest configuration if the feed path is at fault. Consult the current RTMPS or HLS setup for the event rather than assuming an old endpoint or backup address is still right.
Choosing a cloud setup in India
There is no established India-specific OBS recovery recipe, best VM size, or total monthly cost in the cited official guidance. Before choosing a VM, verify that the required instance type is available in the region you want, that its sustained CPU or GPU capacity suits the encoding workload, and that outbound bandwidth charges fit the stream’s expected use. Also check the actual event and channel constraints. Google Cloud lists Mumbai (asia-south1) for a specific H.265 channel use case in its Live Stream API documentation; that does not show that every VM type or OBS workload is available or suitable in Mumbai. Include more than the VM’s hourly charge in a cost estimate: account for continuous runtime, storage for media, and outbound traffic. The official sources cited here do not provide a current India-specific total or a workload comparison, so verify provider pricing and regional availability for your own configuration before committing.
