Yes, it is plausible—but Apple and OBS documentation do not certify that every M2 MacBook Air can sustain this workload indefinitely. The 13-inch M2 MacBook Air (2022) has hardware video encode and decode engines, and OBS supports Apple VideoToolbox H.264 streaming on Apple Silicon. OBS can also loop a local media file. Whether your particular setup stays healthy at 4K and 60 fps depends on the source, encoder settings, and stable upload bandwidth, so test it at the intended settings before relying on it.
What “running a 4K60 loop” involves
This means playing a prerecorded video on the Mac, looping it in streaming software, encoding the output, and sending that live feed to YouTube. It is not the same as watching a 4K video, and YouTube’s recommended download speed for viewers does not tell you what upload speed your live stream needs.
Apple lists hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW, along with video decode and encode engines, for the 13-inch MacBook Air (M2, 2022). Its built-in screen is 2560 × 1664, but that does not cap the resolution you can configure for a stream: display resolution and stream output resolution are separate settings. Apple’s specification for one external display up to 6K at 60Hz describes display support, not a limit on YouTube output. Apple’s M2 MacBook Air technical specifications are specific to the 2022 13-inch model, not later MacBook Air generations.
Set up a local loop in OBS
- Add the video: In OBS, add a Media Source, select the local video file, and enable Loop. OBS documents both the media source and its loop option. If the option is available and useful for your file format, enable hardware decoding.
- Choose a documented encoder path: On Apple Silicon, OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox support and H.264 streaming. This is the supported path established here; do not assume that every codec YouTube accepts is exposed by OBS’s Apple hardware encoder. See the OBS hardware encoding guide.
- Set the output: Configure the stream output to 3840 × 2160 and 60 fps only if your source and workflow support both. A 4K60 stream cannot restore detail or motion that is absent from a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate source.
- Match YouTube’s ingest guidance: Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its published bitrate guidance for 2160p at 60 fps is codec-specific:

These are YouTube encoder bitrate settings for 4K60, not guarantees about the internet plan required at home. Network overhead and variation mean you need upload headroom beyond the configured stream bitrate. YouTube’s current guidance also lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, with live video up to 60 fps. Check its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before setup because platform guidance can change.

Check the upload path and test before relying on it
Plan around the encoder’s upload bitrate, not YouTube’s playback recommendation. YouTube recommends a sustained 20 Mbps connection for watching 4K UHD; that is viewer download guidance, not a live creator upload target. Run an upload speed test on the connection the Mac will actually use, and allow headroom for fluctuations rather than treating the bitrate as a sufficient speed-test result. YouTube’s video playback requirements explain the playback figure.
- Create an unlisted test stream in YouTube Studio and configure it for the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate.
- Start OBS and check YouTube’s preview before making the stream public. Confirm that the picture appears at the expected resolution and that the video repeats without a gap when it reaches the end.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health indicators during the test. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health; see its encoder setup guidance and stream health troubleshooting information.
- If the stream is unstable, lower the bitrate or step down to 4K30, 1080p60, or another setting that remains healthy. Change one variable at a time and test again at the settings you intend to use.
YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That helps with viewer playback options, but it does not remove the need for a stable feed from your encoder.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames: Check upload stability and available headroom at the configured bitrate. Try a lower bitrate or output resolution, then repeat the unlisted test.
- The stream is not actually 4K60: Verify OBS output resolution and frame rate, and check that the source file supports them. A high-resolution Mac display is not required to output 4K, and its built-in display resolution does not set the stream resolution.
- The file does not repeat: Recheck the Media Source’s Loop setting and confirm the selected file plays correctly in OBS before starting the YouTube stream.
- The encoder option or controls differ: OBS control names and available options can vary by version. The cited OBS guide confirms VideoToolbox H.264 streaming on Apple Silicon; it does not establish identical controls or codec choices in every OBS release.
- You need a stream to stay up for a long time: A successful short test is useful, but the cited specifications do not establish a guaranteed continuous 4K60 duration or thermal result for an M2 Air. Do not treat a brief test as proof of uninterrupted long-term operation.
Copyright and YouTube policy still apply
Using a prerecorded file does not exempt a live stream from copyright rules. Make sure you have the rights needed for every video and audio element before broadcasting. YouTube’s separate reused-content rules concern monetization eligibility and are not the same thing as copyright permission; passing a copyright check does not by itself establish that a channel qualifies for monetization.
