A home NAS’s incremental cost depends on its measured power draw, your electricity rate and any extra internet-plan charge. A cloud VM has a posted monthly price, but its total can also include outbound-transfer overages and add-ons—and the listed entry plan is not a tested recommendation for continuous encoding. Use your own power, tariff, ISP terms, stream bitrate and VM plan to compare them.
What you are paying for
A NAS and a cloud VM put the stream in different places. With a NAS, the device reads and sends the video from your home over your internet connection. With a VM, a server in a cloud provider’s data center runs the relevant software and sends the stream from there. In either case, your encoder sends an ingestion stream to YouTube; YouTube then transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. The encoder’s outbound bitrate is not the same thing as each viewer’s delivery bandwidth. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes its ingestion settings and transcoding.
For a fair cost comparison, separate the cash you would spend because of this stream from costs you already incur. If your NAS and home internet are already in use, show both the incremental streaming cost and, if useful, a fully allocated cost. Do not treat sunk costs as free without making that distinction.
Estimate the NAS’s monthly cost
Measure the power attributable to streaming
Use the NAS’s average power draw in watts, not its maximum-rated power. If it is already on for other jobs, measure or estimate the additional draw attributable to streaming separately from its baseline. An optional plug-in electricity meter can help measure equipment draw; it is a measurement aid, not a required part of the setup.

Calculate electricity for the billing period as:
Average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours in the billing period × your local currency per kWh
For a monthly estimate, use the number of hours in the month you are costing rather than assuming every month has the same length. Apply your actual tariff, including any relevant time-of-use rate or taxes if your bill charges them. This formula produces a local estimate; there is no universal NAS wattage or electricity price to substitute for your own measurement and bill.
Add any internet-plan cost caused by the stream
Check whether your ISP charges extra for data use, requires a higher plan for sustained upload, or imposes a relevant upload limit. Add only the incremental charge that applies to your plan. If there is no additional charge, record that as zero in the worksheet—but still check whether the connection can sustain the stream reliably.

Estimate the VM’s monthly cost
DigitalOcean’s live Droplet pricing page lists these Basic plan examples. They are posted plan prices and specifications, not recommendations or proof that a plan can encode a particular stream:
| Basic Droplet example | Posted price per month | Memory | vCPU | SSD | Included transfer |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry plan | $4 | 512 MiB | 1 | 10 GiB | 500 GiB |
| Next listed plan | $6 | 1 GiB | 1 | Not stated on the cited plan summary | 1,000 GiB |
| 2 GiB plan | $12 | 2 GiB | Not stated on the cited plan summary | Not stated on the cited plan summary | 2,000 GiB |
Values above are the examples listed on DigitalOcean’s Droplet Pricing page, accessed October 4, 2026. Check the live page for the plan and region you would actually choose; these prices do not establish the cheapest suitable VM or the performance of an encoder workload.
Include transfer and other charges
DigitalOcean documents an additional outbound-transfer charge of $0.01 per GiB. Droplet transfer is pooled at the team level, and unused monthly allowance does not roll over. Include overage only if your account’s applicable pooled allowance is exceeded; also account for any storage, backups, taxes or other add-ons in your selected plan. See DigitalOcean’s bandwidth billing documentation, verified September 14, 2026.

Estimate how much transfer a continuous stream uses
For a constant encoded bitrate, a rough decimal estimate is:
Bitrate in Mbps × seconds in the billing period ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000 = decimal GB
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This is arithmetic from the configured bitrate, not a published YouTube traffic statistic. Provider billing uses its own units and accounting rules, so convert and round according to the provider’s billing documentation. Actual transmitted data can differ with stream configuration, interruptions and restarts.

YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include 6 Mbps for 720p30, 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p60. These make clear why resolution and frame rate matter to a transfer estimate: a higher bitrate consumes more data over the same period. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the applicable resolution, frame rate and codec rather than treating any one bitrate as universal.
Check that the host and connection can sustain the stream
Home NAS: upload and local reliability
Check the home connection’s sustained upload capacity at the time the stream will run, not just its advertised download speed. The upload needs headroom above the chosen encoder bitrate; network congestion, router or ISP interruptions, and other household traffic can affect continuity. Also consider local power, router availability and the upkeep of the NAS and its software.
Cloud VM: encoding capacity and management
A VM’s included transfer does not prove that its CPU and memory can encode your chosen video continuously. The cited provider plan examples contain no benchmark or validated configuration for a particular stream, so test the actual workload before relying on a plan. DigitalOcean describes Droplets as VMs for which customers manage the operating system, applications and data; that operational responsibility belongs in the comparison.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings whichever host you choose
YouTube’s guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 or AV1, constant-bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS. Google’s documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP through an SSL connection and specifies port 443, a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint, and hostname/SNI handling. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation, last updated September 14, 2026.
Test before relying on a continuous stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream and monitoring stream health and messages while it runs. These encoder and delivery requirements apply whether the process is on a NAS or a VM.

| Cost or constraint | Home NAS | Cloud VM |
|---|---|---|
| Compute or equipment | Incremental electricity from measured average watts; distinguish streaming load from NAS baseline. | Selected VM’s recurring plan price. |
| Network transfer | Any incremental ISP fee, plus sustained home upload capacity. | Included outbound allowance and applicable overage; allowance and billing follow provider rules. |
| Other charges | Any extra internet-plan cost or local equipment costs attributable to the stream. | Applicable storage, backups, taxes and other add-ons. |
| Operational dependency | Home power, internet, router and NAS upkeep. | VM availability and your management of its operating system, applications and data. |
| Performance certainty | Verify the NAS can handle the chosen workload and the connection can upload steadily. | Verify the selected VM can handle the chosen workload; listed plan prices do not establish encoding performance. |
Use your measured values rather than a generic monthly total. If the NAS and internet are already paid for, calculate incremental cost first, then optionally show allocated cost separately. For the VM, use the price and allowance of the plan you would actually run and include likely overages and add-ons. Local electricity rates, ISP policies, stream bitrate, provider region and accounting rules can change the outcome.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain a NAS or VM for a YouTube loop, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it loops the uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
