If your Larix Broadcaster stream looks rotated or sideways on YouTube, first check Larix’s local preview, then set the intended portrait or landscape orientation and decide whether rotation should be locked or follow the phone. Send a short test stream and compare YouTube’s encoder preview with Larix’s preview before going live. Menu labels and paths can vary by operating system and app version.

Find where the rotation starts

Check the Larix preview before changing anything. It helps distinguish an orientation problem in the app’s outgoing video from an issue that appears later in YouTube playback. This is a practical comparison, not a dedicated YouTube rotation-diagnosis feature.

  1. If the broadcast is live, stop or pause before changing orientation settings. A setting change should not be assumed to repair video already sent or an archived segment.
  2. Look at Larix’s local preview. If it is already sideways, begin with Larix’s video/orientation controls and the phone’s orientation behavior.
  3. If Larix looks correct, send a short test to YouTube and compare the incoming encoder preview in Live Control Room with the Larix preview.

If YouTube’s incoming preview is also rotated, continue checking Larix’s orientation configuration. If that preview is correct but playback looks wrong on one viewer’s device, compare playback on another device before concluding that the stream itself is encoded incorrectly. The reviewed guidance does not establish a specific YouTube player rotation-lock fix.

Choose portrait, landscape, or live rotation

Softvelum’s Larix Broadcaster product documentation describes “Landscape and portrait orientation with live rotation support.” Its configuration reference defines the relevant behavior as rotation off, follow, or lock; the best choice depends on the format you want and whether you intend to turn the phone while live.

Choice Use it when What to expect
Portrait You want a vertical stream. The intended output is vertical; verify the result in YouTube’s preview.
Landscape You want a horizontal stream. The intended output is horizontal; verify the result in YouTube’s preview.
Follow screen rotation You deliberately want to change orientation during the broadcast. Rotating the device can change the output orientation.
Lock while broadcasting The stream should remain in one orientation while the phone moves. Live reorientation is constrained until the lock is changed or the broadcast ends.

For a fixed-format broadcast, choose the intended orientation and the fixed/locked behavior where offered. Use follow-rotation only when a live orientation change is part of the plan. Softvelum’s documentation confirms the controls, but not one universal tap-by-tap menu route for every iOS, Android, and app version; look in Larix’s video or orientation settings and verify the labels on your device.

Test the outgoing stream before going live

  1. Set the desired portrait or landscape output in Larix.
  2. Set rotation to locked/off for a fixed composition, or follow if you plan to rotate the device during the broadcast.
  3. Start a short test stream to YouTube using the server URL and stream key configured in the encoder.
  4. Open the encoder preview in YouTube Live Control Room and compare it with Larix’s preview.
  5. Check YouTube’s stream health and confirm the orientation before beginning the intended broadcast.

YouTube says it detects the encoder settings and transcodes the stream for viewers. Its guidance recommends testing the encoder setup before a broadcast and monitoring stream health. A test is useful because it lets you inspect what YouTube receives rather than relying only on the phone display.

Common symptoms and fixes

  • Larix preview is sideways: Recheck the selected orientation and rotation behavior in Larix, then check the phone’s orientation behavior. Menu names and placement depend on the app version and operating system.
  • The picture changes direction when the phone turns: If that is unwanted, use the fixed/locked behavior instead of follow-rotation.
  • Larix looks right but YouTube’s encoder preview is sideways: Recheck the app’s outgoing orientation configuration and repeat a short test before going live.
  • YouTube’s encoder preview is right but one viewer sees sideways playback: Compare playback on another device. The available guidance does not identify a particular player setting as the cause.

A mount or tripod may keep a phone physically steady, but it is not a documented correction for an incorrectly oriented encoded stream. Correct the orientation behavior in the app and confirm the outgoing result.

Version notes
