First meet YouTube’s live-stream eligibility rules, use audio you have rights to stream, and decide how you will handle session rotation, dropped connections, and ads.
Before you start: eligibility, audio rights, and a realistic 24/7 plan
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube’s computer live-streaming instructions require a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube lists an encoder as a live-streaming method suited to prepared scenes and setups involving equipment such as microphones or preamps. Review YouTube’s computer live-streaming guide for current account requirements and setup steps.
Use audio you can legally broadcast
The safest source is a recording you made yourself, provided you also have permission for any other material in it. If you use third-party wind recordings, music, or other sound, verify that the rights cover live streaming and any replay you intend to keep. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; a stream may be interrupted or terminated. For licensed material managed through Content ID, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its allowlist. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Do not assume a loop alone is enough for monetization
Permission to use a recording and eligibility to earn money from it are separate questions. YouTube’s channel monetization policies expect original, authentic content that offers viewer value; a generic or repetitive presentation can be a monetization concern even when the underlying audio is cleared. If you plan to apply to or remain in the YouTube Partner Program, read YouTube’s channel monetization policies and build a distinctive, rights-cleared presentation rather than relying on a loop as a guarantee of approval.

Think of 24/7 as station availability, not one endless event
YouTube does not promise that a single live event will remain uninterrupted forever. There is also an important difference between keeping a station available and retaining its replay: a long event may not be archived. If a brief handoff gap is unacceptable, plan how you will monitor and restart broadcasts; if preserving archives is important, plan shorter sessions as described below.
Set up the live stream with an encoder
Prepare a simple, stable scene
Use an encoder workflow for a prepared ambient scene. Set up the wind audio and a suitable visual, such as an original still image or scene you have permission to use. Keep the source files available locally and check that the scene plays as intended before going live. The available source material does not establish a universal bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, computer specification, or upload-speed threshold for this use case, so do not copy arbitrary values as if they were required for every setup.

Create the YouTube broadcast and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create and then Go live to open the live control room. Confirm that the channel meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements.
- Set up the live event. Enter a clear title and description, choose the audience setting and visibility you want, and configure any other event details shown in the control room.
- Get the stream details. In the live control room, use the stream key and server information shown for the event. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control the stream.
- Configure your encoder. Select the YouTube streaming destination if the encoder offers it, then enter the stream details using the encoder’s current interface. Select the prepared audio-and-visual scene and verify that audio is present.
- Start the encoder and check the live control room. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream and that the preview and audio behave as expected. Start the broadcast from the control room when its status and preview are ready.
- Monitor the session. Keep an eye on the encoder and YouTube live control room after launch, especially while establishing your process for long-running sessions.
Exact button placement and encoder controls can change. Follow the current YouTube control-room labels and your encoder’s instructions rather than relying on a fixed layout. Google’s HLS developer documentation is intended for encoder vendors, not a general consumer setup guide; its protocol-specific requirements should not be treated as ordinary OBS settings.
Keep the broadcast available and decide how to handle replays
One long broadcast or shorter sessions?

YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and cautions that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. “May not” is not a guarantee that every longer event will be lost. Keep a local recording backup if a copy matters to you, and check the resulting archive rather than assuming it was saved. A public archived live stream can count toward qualified watch hours for YouTube Partner Program eligibility; a live stream that is not archived does not. YouTube’s August 12, 2026 explanation of qualified watch hours and Shorts views discusses that distinction.

Monitor connection health and recover from interruptions
Read encoder status before changing the audio setup
In OBS, rising dropped frames and a yellow or red connection indicator can mean the connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Check the OBS status and YouTube live control room before assuming the wind recording or YouTube audio is at fault. OBS’s Help Portal is the relevant troubleshooting reference. A wired network connection is one possible diagnostic choice, not a guaranteed fix.
Use a recovery checklist
- If YouTube stops receiving the stream: Check whether the encoder is still running and whether its connection indicator or dropped-frame count points to a network issue. Recheck the stream status in YouTube’s control room before restarting.
- If the connection is unstable: Review whether the selected bitrate is too demanding for the connection at that moment. OBS identifies instability or insufficient capacity for the configured bitrate as possible causes; the source material does not establish a single upload-speed threshold for all setups.
- If audio is missing: Confirm that the intended scene and audio source are active in the encoder, then check the control-room preview before continuing.
- If the stream is interrupted over a rights match: Identify the matched material and resolve the rights issue. For licensed Content ID material, ask the rights owner about allowlisting your channel; having a license does not by itself ensure a live stream will avoid interruption.
- If a long session has no replay: Check the archive in YouTube Studio. An event longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so use shorter sessions and a local recording backup when replay preservation matters.
Choose an ad policy that fits overnight listening
If your channel is monetized, YouTube may serve pre-roll and mid-roll ads on live streams, but ad slots are not guaranteed to fill. Automatic, scheduled, and manual controls are available for mid-rolls. YouTube explicitly advises that it might be better not to put ads in the middle of a meditation or music video, a relevant consideration for listeners trying to sleep. Decide whether potential ad revenue is worth the possibility of interrupting the soundscape, and do not promise listeners an ad-free experience if ads are enabled.
