Memberships can provide recurring monthly payments from viewers who join and stay; ads can reach viewers who never become members, but YouTube does not guarantee that every ad slot will serve. Compare your channel’s actual membership receipts and retention with live-stream and replay ad revenue over the same period. You can use both.
How memberships and ads differ
| Factor | Channel memberships | Live-stream ads |
|---|---|---|
| How revenue is generated | Viewers make recurring monthly payments for channel-specific perks. | Potential revenue from pre-roll, display, and mid-roll ads shown to eligible viewers. |
| What makes revenue vary | How many viewers join, how long they remain members, and the costs and work involved in delivering perks. | Whether ad slots serve, audience reach and behavior, and the effect of ad frequency on viewing. |
| Who can contribute | Viewers who choose to join and keep their membership. | Potentially a broader pool of viewers, though ad delivery is not guaranteed. |
| Best evidence for your channel | Membership receipts and retention over a defined period. | Live-stream and replay ad revenue in YouTube Analytics for the same period. |
YouTube describes memberships as monthly payments in exchange for exclusive channel perks. That makes the payment mechanism recurring, not the income guaranteed: members can leave, and the platform’s description does not establish a membership conversion rate for 24/7 channels. See YouTube’s live monetization overview.
Ads can monetize viewers who do not join, but the number of viewers alone does not tell you what ads will earn. YouTube Help says, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Measure your channel’s realized revenue rather than assuming every placement becomes an impression. YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance explains the available ad types and controls.
What the published mid-roll statistic does—and does not—tell you
YouTube reports that creators who chose automatic live mid-roll ads saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour. YouTube says this comparison was between channels with automatic live mid-rolls and channels without them, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. It is a platform-reported comparison of ad settings—not a comparison of ads with memberships, not a controlled result for continuous 24/7 streams, and not a promise that an individual channel will get the same result. YouTube’s guidance gives the statistic’s scope.

- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
Use the figure as context when considering ad configuration, not as a forecast of your channel’s revenue or a reason to assume ads beat membership income.
Can a 24/7 channel use both?
Yes. The revenue models are not mutually exclusive. YouTube says automatic live mid-rolls can limit ad disruption to channel members, pause mid-rolls temporarily for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, and Stickers, and snooze ads during high-engagement moments. Those controls can help a channel balance ad opportunities with the experience of viewers who support it, though they do not establish which mix will maximize your channel’s net revenue. Check YouTube’s current live-ad guidance for the available controls.

Check eligibility and turn on the right monetization features
YouTube’s feature table lists a 500-subscriber YouTube Partner Program entry tier that includes channel memberships, and a 1,000-subscriber tier for Watch Page ads; both have additional requirements. Eligibility and availability can change, so check your channel’s current status and applicable terms in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s monetization overview describes YPP requirements, and its feature and module guide explains feature access.
- For ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live streams on the Watch Page, YouTube says to accept the Watch Page Monetization Module.
- For fan-funding revenue, including memberships, accept the Commerce Product Module and enable the individual feature. YouTube notes that existing Commerce Product Addendum signatories do not need the new module.
These modules cover different monetization features. Confirm the terms and controls presented for your channel rather than assuming that enabling one feature enables the other.

Choose ad settings for a continuous broadcast
YouTube describes automatic live mid-rolls as recommended and offers low, medium, and high frequency settings. It also documents scheduled intervals and manual insertion. Its guidance warns that scheduled or manual settings may have lower earnings potential than automatic mode; that is not a guarantee that automatic ads produce better net results for every channel, especially if interruptions change viewing behavior.
- Start with your channel’s objective. Decide how much interruption your audience is likely to tolerate and what member experience you want to preserve.
- Choose an available ad approach in YouTube Studio. Use automatic mid-rolls and select an offered frequency, or choose scheduled intervals or manual insertion if those better fit the broadcast. The specific controls may change; follow the options currently shown for your channel.
- Evaluate actual results. Compare realized revenue and viewing behavior over a consistent period instead of treating a setting or platform-wide average as a channel-specific forecast.
YouTube also mentions an Elgato Stream Deck plugin option for inserting ads. It is an optional workflow tool, not a requirement for running ads or a guarantee of higher revenue.
Compare results using your own channel data
- Set a comparison period. Use the same dates for both income sources so a change in broadcast schedule or audience does not distort the comparison.
- Find live and replay ad revenue. In YouTube Analytics, use the Live filter to examine revenue from live streams and replays, as described in YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
- Compare membership receipts and retention. Include the number of members who stayed or cancelled and the ongoing time or costs needed to provide perks.
- Judge more than gross revenue. Consider net receipts, income stability, audience reach, perk workload, and whether ad frequency appears to affect viewing behavior.
- Adjust and reassess. Test a change to ad frequency or membership perks over a suitable period, then compare the same measures again. YouTube’s published material does not establish a universal best frequency or a break-even point for 24/7 streams.
Keep the stream running without keeping a computer on
If the broadcast itself depends on a home computer or streaming setup, StreamNeo is a cloud option to consider: it keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, so a computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It does not decide whether memberships or ads are more profitable; use your YouTube Analytics to make that business decision. Learn more at StreamNeo.
