To capture a Chromium screenshot at 2×, set the device pixel ratio (DPR) to 2 in Chrome DevTools Device Mode, or set CDP’s deviceScaleFactor to 2 before calling Page.captureScreenshot. A 400-pixel-wide CSS viewport then renders nominally 800 pixels wide in the image. Choose a viewport or full-page capture based on whether you need only visible content or the entire page.
What 2× device scale factor means
Device pixel ratio is the relationship between CSS pixels and device pixels. At DPR 2, each CSS pixel maps to two device pixels in each dimension. For example, a 400 × 800 CSS-pixel viewport is nominally rendered at 800 × 1600 device pixels. The saved image’s actual dimensions are the practical check; the scale relationship does not guarantee how an image viewer will display it.
DPR changes the rendering scale, not the CSS viewport dimensions. Set the viewport width and height separately to control the layout being captured.
Capture at 2× in Chrome DevTools
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools. Toggle the device toolbar to enter Device Mode.
- Open More options > Add device pixel ratio.
- In the DPR selector above the emulated viewport, select 2.
- Set the desired viewport dimensions and device type. Use mobile emulation only if you want its additional mobile-oriented behavior; it affects more than DPR, including viewport-meta behavior.
- Open More options > Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, or choose Capture a full size screenshot to include content beyond it.
Chrome Device Mode approximates how a page looks and performs on a mobile device; it does not run the page on actual mobile hardware. If device-specific rendering or behavior matters, validate on a real device. See Chrome DevTools Device Mode.

Automate a 2× screenshot with CDP
For repeatable capture, connect a Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) client to the page. Apply the metrics override before capturing. The following is the protocol command and parameters; the exact syntax for sending it depends on your CDP client.

}The response contains image data for the selected format. The protocol supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP. For a full-page capture, configure the capture to extend beyond the viewport: captureBeyondViewport controls this behavior and defaults to false in the current protocol reference. Confirm your client’s handling of the returned image data and beyond-viewport capture option. The official Chrome DevTools Protocol reference documents the commands; its Protocol Monitor guide also shows sending protocol commands through DevTools.
Choose viewport or full-page scope
- Viewport: capture only what is visible in the emulated viewport. In DevTools, use Capture screenshot; in CDP, use the default viewport behavior.
- Full page: include page content outside the viewport. In DevTools, select Capture a full size screenshot; in CDP, use the appropriate beyond-viewport capture behavior.
Full-page scope and DPR are separate choices: set the scale to 2, then select the capture extent you need.

Troubleshooting
The image is not twice as wide as expected
Check the saved image’s pixel dimensions and confirm that DPR 2 was selected before capture. Remember that the viewport values are CSS pixels; with a 400 CSS-pixel width, DPR 2 produces a nominal 800-device-pixel width.

The layout looks like desktop, not mobile
A DPR override alone does not enable all mobile behavior. Choose a mobile device type in Device Mode or set CDP’s mobile parameter to true when mobile emulation is intended. Device Mode remains an approximation, not a substitute for testing on the target hardware.

Use DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot, or configure CDP capture beyond the viewport. The CDP parameter defaults to false in the current reference.

The CDP command syntax does not work in my automation library
The protocol method and parameter names are stable concepts, but client-library syntax varies. Use the library’s command-sending interface to issue Emulation.setDeviceMetricsOverride first, then Page.captureScreenshot; consult its documentation for command invocation and image-data decoding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a 2× scale factor with a JPEG or WebP screenshot?
Yes. CDP’s screenshot command supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP.
Does DPR 2 mean the screenshot will display twice as large?
Not necessarily. DPR describes pixel mapping during rendering; check the saved image’s pixel dimensions and how the viewing application displays it.
