To request a large image preview when a page is shared on X (formerly Twitter), add card metadata to that page’s HTML <head>. Set twitter:card to summary_large_image and twitter:image to the full, publicly reachable URL of an image that represents the page.

Add the card metadata to your page

Place the tags in the page’s <head>, replacing the sample account names, text, and image URL with values for your site and the specific page. The example follows legacy Twitter developer documentation; X’s current detailed card requirements are not confirmed by the old documentation pages, which now redirect to the general developer platform overview.

<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
<meta name="twitter:site" content="@youraccount">
<meta name="twitter:creator" content="@author">
<meta name="twitter:title" content="A concise page title">
<meta name="twitter:description" content="A concise description of this page.">
<meta name="twitter:image" content="https://example.com/images/page-image.jpg">
  • twitter:card requests the card layout. Use summary_large_image when you want the image to be prominent.
  • twitter:image identifies the image. Use an absolute URL and choose an image relevant to that individual page.
  • twitter:title and twitter:description provide page-specific text for the card.
  • The legacy reference describes twitter:site as account attribution for Card analytics and includes twitter:creator for the author. Replace or omit these according to your current needs; their present behavior is not established by the old reference.

Add the tags to each page whose preview you want to control. A shared, generic logo or author portrait is not a good substitute for an image representing the page’s content.

Choose an image and treat old size limits cautiously

Legacy Twitter documentation advised a minimum image width of 280 pixels, a minimum height of 150 pixels, and a file size below 1 MB. Those figures are historical specifications reproduced by a third-party translation mirror, not verified current X requirements. The old detailed X developer pages now redirect to a general platform overview, so check current X documentation before relying on those limits or choosing a production image size.

Use an image URL that resolves to the intended asset and can be fetched by the platform. The old documentation says the image should represent the individual page rather than being reused indiscriminately. Current crawler access rules and supported image formats are not confirmed here.

How Twitter-specific tags relate to Open Graph

A legacy tag reference lists Open Graph fields as fallbacks for corresponding Twitter-specific values: og:title for twitter:title, og:description for twitter:description, and og:image for twitter:image. Treat this as documented legacy behavior, not a guaranteed current X contract. If you want a large-image layout, keep the explicit twitter:card value rather than assuming Open Graph tags select it.

Verify the page and troubleshoot a missing preview

  1. Publish the page, then inspect its served HTML source—not just the editor or template—to confirm the metadata is present in the <head> and values are correct.
  2. Open the complete twitter:image URL directly and confirm it serves the intended image rather than an error page or an unrelated asset.
  3. Check that the image is specific to the page and that the card selector is exactly summary_large_image if you want the large layout.
  4. If the preview is absent or stale, consult current X documentation or platform tooling for crawler and cache-refresh behavior. The present availability of the legacy Card Validator and current refresh procedure could not be verified.
Symptom What to check Next step
No image appears Whether the served HTML contains twitter:image and whether its URL is correct. Correct the tag or image URL, publish, and check current X crawler guidance.
The wrong card layout appears Whether twitter:card is present and set to summary_large_image. Update the explicit card selector; Open Graph fallback tags do not themselves request this layout in the legacy example.
The preview shows an old image or text Whether the current page source and image URL have the new values. Look up current X cache-refresh behavior; the legacy validator’s present availability and refresh procedure are unverified.
Image dimensions or acceptance are unclear Whether you are relying on the historical 280 × 150 pixel minimum and below-1-MB limit. Verify current requirements with X before using those historical figures as constraints.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. It captures rendered pages; it does not set Twitter Card metadata or guarantee how X will display a card. If you need a screenshot of a page after publishing or changing its tags, one GET request can capture it:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/page -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and parameters. Before a capture, it can accept cookie and consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
