This is browser-side profile emulation—not a promise of complete physical-device or operating-system simulation.
Use a KnownDevices profile before navigation
Puppeteer’s documented sequence is to choose a profile, create a page, emulate the profile, and then visit the target. This runnable ES module example checks the page title and closes the browser even if navigation or the check fails:

}- Install Puppeteer in the project if it is not already installed:
npm install puppeteer. - Import
KnownDevicesalongside Puppeteer. - Look up a profile using its documented string key.
- Create the browser and page, then await
page.emulate(device). - Navigate with
page.goto()and perform your responsive-page checks.
The guard makes an unavailable profile fail with a clear message instead of passing an undefined value to the emulation method. Use the exact key spelling and capitalization.
What page.emulate() configures
Puppeteer defines page.emulate(device) as a shortcut for calling Page.setUserAgent() and Page.setViewport(). A Device profile contains userAgent and viewport properties. The method resizes the page, so Puppeteer recommends applying it before navigation; some sites may react unexpectedly if the size changes after they load. See the Page.emulate() reference and the Device interface.

This configures browser-side metrics and user-agent behavior. The reference does not claim that it reproduces every feature of a physical phone or tablet, the device’s operating system, or all hardware-dependent behavior. For issues that depend on a real device or OS, verify separately in that environment.
Choose and verify the profile key
KnownDevices is a readonly record of named device profiles. Examples in the reference include iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro landscape, iPad, iPad landscape, Galaxy S9+, and Pixel 5. The available set can vary by installed Puppeteer release; consult the KnownDevices API reference and the types in your installed package for the keys in use.

Portrait and landscape entries are distinct keys. Select the orientation that matches the condition you intend to test, then inspect the chosen profile’s user-agent and viewport values if those details matter to the test. The documentation labels the KnownDevices reference as Puppeteer 25.11.0 and the Page.emulate() reference as 25.12.0; these are displayed version labels, not publication dates. Check the reference corresponding to your installed release.
Troubleshooting
- Profile lookup returns undefined: The name may be misspelled or absent in that installed version. Compare the exact key with the API reference and package types; do not silently substitute a different device.
- The page looks like desktop after navigation: Ensure the awaited
page.emulate(device)call occurs beforepage.goto(), and confirm the profile lookup succeeded. - The page changes size unexpectedly: Emulation sets the profile viewport and resizes the page. If the application assumes a stable size, establish emulation before loading it.
- A device-specific issue still occurs or disappears: The profile sets user-agent and viewport values; it does not establish complete physical-device fidelity. Reproduce the issue on the actual target hardware and operating system when required.
