To test a QR code, check that it encodes the expected content, scan it as a user would, and confirm that the final browser page or app screen is correct. A validator can catch some link or configuration issues, but only an on-device test checks the whole journey.
Test the full QR-code journey
A QR code can decode correctly yet still lead to a broken page, the wrong app screen, or a confusing fallback. Test each layer separately: the encoded payload, the code as presented, the device scan, and the destination or app handoff.

1. Confirm what the code should contain
Before scanning, write down the expected payload exactly. It might be a web URL, plain text, or a custom payload handled by a particular reader or app. The European Commission’s QR code Security Guide distinguishes URL use with public readers from custom payloads, and digital codes displayed on screens from physical codes.
Decode the deployed code with a trusted scanner or your app’s test tooling, then compare the result character-for-character with the expected value. For a URL, check the scheme, hostname, path, query parameters, and any campaign or state values that matter. Follow redirects and inspect the final destination, not just the first URL.

If the destination page has moved, ensure the old URL redirects intentionally. Keep URLs short where practical, as the Department of Energy recommends. A valid decode proves neither that the destination is correct nor that it is safe; make sure the visible purpose and resulting destination match.
2. Inspect the code in its real context
Test the deployed code where people will encounter it: on the website, in the app, in an email or presentation, or on the final printed material. A code can look fine in a design file but be clipped, covered, too small for the intended viewing distance, or obscured by surrounding content.
- For a QR code on a screen, scan it with a second device. Viewing a screenshot on the same phone does not test the scan journey.
- Check the full code is visible and not overlapped by a button, banner, or screen edge.
- Try the expected lighting and viewing conditions. There is no universal minimum screen size or scan distance established by the cited guidance; verify with the devices and context you expect users to have.
- For print, test the final printed output rather than relying only on the source artwork.
The European Commission guide treats QR codes displayed on websites and mobile-app screens as digital QR support, distinct from printed codes. Separately, the Department of Energy advises against putting QR codes on websites, social media, or email when users are on the same device and could click a hyperlink instead. That is an interaction consideration: if users are likely to see the code and browse on one device, provide a clickable link as an alternative.

3. Scan on the phones users will use
iPhone and iPad
Use the normal camera or Code Scanner flow, then tap the surfaced link. Apple’s instructions are at Scan a QR code with your iPhone or iPad. If your product includes its own scanner, test that separately as well. Apple’s VisionKit documentation describes recognizing QR codes in camera video and offering an action for the recognized payload; a website payload may open in a browser or be handled by a custom action: Scanning data with the camera.

Use the camera or the Scan QR code control, then tap the displayed link. Google’s Pixel guidance covers scan methods and troubleshooting: Scan QR codes with your Pixel phone. If a scan fails, confirm the whole code is visible, hold steady, improve the lighting, clean the lens, and move closer while keeping the code fully in frame.
Record the observed result
For each device and scanner, note whether the code was recognized, what payload or preview appeared, what confirmation action was offered, which browser or app opened, the final URL, and the final screen. Also exercise relevant failure paths, such as an expired link, unavailable network, missing app, logged-out user, or unsupported payload. These are useful QA cases, not platform-mandated tests.

4. Test app links independently from web links
A QR code may open a correct web fallback but fail to route into the installed app, or it may open the app at the wrong screen. Test the link with the app installed and absent; if relevant, test logged-in and logged-out states, access restrictions, and location-dependent content.
Google Ads Help’s Step 4: Use the Deep link validator can report website and app checks, but its preview may not accurately reflect app content, including where login or location restrictions apply. Google recommends scanning the QR code on the user’s own device to confirm that the correct page opens in the app.

5. Check payload handling and user expectations
Because a QR code hides its payload until a scan, show users a destination preview when possible and ensure it agrees with the code’s stated purpose. Test that unexpected payload types are rejected or safely handled, and that custom actions in your app require appropriate user intent.
The European Commission guide discusses security according to payload and reader type and provides a security wizard for digital and physical QR support. Decoding successfully does not certify that a destination is safe; verify the intended payload, destination, and handling rather than treating a scan as a safety check.

Troubleshooting common failures

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a successful QR scan prove the destination is safe?
No. It only shows that a scanner could read the payload. Verify that the destination and handling are expected; decoding is not a safety certification.
Can I test a QR code displayed on the same phone I am using?
Use a second device to scan an on-screen code. A screenshot inspected on the same phone does not test how the QR scan journey works.
