Use Cypress to drive a repeatable user journey, then run Google Lighthouse against the page state that journey reaches. Cypress verifies and automates application behavior; Lighthouse audits page performance. Keep the time taken by your Cypress test suite separate from the page’s user-facing performance measurements.

What Cypress and Lighthouse measure

Cypress launches and controls a browser in an isolated profile, so it can visit your application and reproduce the interactions needed to reach a state. Lighthouse is an open-source automated web-page auditing tool that reports performance measurements and audit findings. Chrome documents running it in DevTools, from the command line, as a Node module, and through Lighthouse CI: Lighthouse overview.

  • To measure Cypress suite speed: look at test execution time and diagnose slow tests using Cypress’s performance guidance. Those timings describe the test run, not the page’s Lighthouse performance: Cypress test performance.
  • To audit a page after a journey: use Cypress to reach the target state, then arrange for Lighthouse to audit that page in a consistent browser context.
  • To understand real-user experience: supplement lab audits with field data where it is available; a Lighthouse lab run alone does not measure all real-user conditions.

Build a repeatable audit workflow

1. Define the question and target state

Choose the exact page and state you need to evaluate. A page reached after signing in, opening a menu, or applying a filter may behave differently from its initial load. Decide whether you are investigating test-suite runtime, page performance, or real-user experience; they require different evidence.

2. Use Cypress to reproduce the journey

Write a stable Cypress journey that visits the app and performs the interactions that reach the target page state. Cypress supports browser automation in its launched browsers and is designed to run in CI. Keep test data, application state, and navigation steps predictable so the audit is not measuring a different experience from run to run.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. Capture a Lighthouse baseline

Before changing the application, run an audit and record the baseline. Chrome’s DevTools guidance recommends starting with an audit and using its report to identify likely improvements: Lighthouse in Chrome DevTools. Record the audited URL and state, browser and device profile, navigation mode, throttling, storage/cache treatment, and tool versions. Choose those conditions deliberately and keep them fixed for later comparisons.

4. Run the same audit after the journey

For an audit that follows Cypress navigation, use an integration only after checking its current package documentation, Cypress and browser requirements, configuration, and threshold behavior. The Cypress plugin directory distinguishes community-owned plugins from official Cypress work; a listing there does not make a plugin an official integration: Cypress plugin directory. Chrome documents Lighthouse CLI, Node-module, and Lighthouse CI approaches, but the exact setup for combining a particular Cypress version with a particular integration must be verified against that integration’s current documentation.

Do not treat an old tutorial’s package command as a current, compatible recipe without checking it. When a plugin is not suitable, keep Cypress responsible for the journey and run Lighthouse through a supported Chrome-documented route against the desired page state.

5. Investigate findings and change one thing

Use the audit details and browser performance tooling to identify a plausible cause, make one change, then repeat the audit under the recorded conditions. Relevant details can include request count, transfer size, DOM size, and third-party code impact. An audit or opportunity is evidence to investigate, not automatic proof of a user-visible problem or a guaranteed improvement to the overall score. Lighthouse audit names and grouping can change; Chrome notes that Lighthouse 13 reorganized some previously named audits: Lighthouse DOM-size guidance.

Compare results without fooling yourself

Compare the same URL and application state, browser and device profile, navigation mode, cache/storage treatment, throttling, and tool versions. Examine the underlying metrics and relevant findings rather than relying on one aggregate score. Lighthouse combines metric scores into an overall score, and test conditions can affect the result; repeat surprising runs under controlled conditions before using a score to block a build. Chrome’s scoring guidance explains how scores are calculated and why they should be interpreted with their underlying metrics: Lighthouse performance scoring.

Keep lab and field evidence labeled separately. PageSpeed Insights can show Lighthouse lab results alongside Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) field data when available. Lab results are controlled estimates; CrUX reflects field experience from real Chrome users: About PageSpeed Insights.

Use thresholds carefully

A regression threshold is useful only if it reflects repeatable baselines and the product’s needs. Establish what normal variation looks like across repeated runs before setting a gate. If a result unexpectedly crosses the threshold, repeat it under the same conditions and inspect the metrics and audit details before treating it as a confirmed regression.

For longer-term performance regression workflows, Chrome documents Lighthouse CI: Lighthouse CI. Cypress also recommends recording baseline runs in Cypress Cloud when tracking test-run history; that history is useful for Cypress execution, but it does not replace Lighthouse page measurements: Cypress test performance.

Troubleshoot common problems

The Lighthouse score changes between runs

Check that the browser, device profile, throttling, navigation mode, cache/storage state, URL, page state, and tool versions match. Repeat the audit before concluding that the application regressed, then inspect the underlying metrics rather than only the score.

The audit captures the wrong page or state

Verify that the Cypress journey completed the intended interactions and that Lighthouse starts against the resulting page state. Make the journey and test data deterministic; an audit of the initial page load will not answer a question about a later application state.

A Cypress plugin does not work with your setup

Check the plugin’s current maintenance status, Cypress version requirements, browser support, configuration and threshold behavior. Community ownership is not the same as official Cypress support. If compatibility is unclear, use Chrome’s documented Lighthouse CLI, Node module, or CI route rather than assuming an old plugin recipe still applies.

A lab improvement does not appear in field data

First confirm that comparable field data is available for the relevant page and period. Lab and field measurements represent different conditions, so a lab change does not guarantee a corresponding change in CrUX data. Use PageSpeed Insights to view both forms of evidence when available.

If you need a screenshot of a URL rather than a Cypress-driven performance audit, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A screenshot is not a Lighthouse measurement and does not replace this workflow; it can be useful when the task is simply to capture a page.

One GET request returns an image or PDF. The example below saves a screenshot as WebP; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie/consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP server provides the tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Lighthouse run inside a Cypress test?

It can be arranged with an integration or a separate Lighthouse invocation, but check the selected integration’s current compatibility and setup documentation. Chrome documents Lighthouse CLI, Node-module, and CI use; this guide does not establish a canonical Cypress plugin recipe.

Does a Lighthouse score tell me how fast Cypress tests run?

No. Cypress runtime measures test execution; Lighthouse audits page performance. They answer different questions.
