Catalina is newer than Microsoft’s broad macOS 10.12 minimum for Edge, but that does not prove a specific Edge 79 build works correctly on Catalina. No build-specific compatibility matrix or documented hands-on test establishes that combination.
What Edge 79 means for this test
Edge 79 was part of Microsoft’s rollout of the new Chromium-based Edge. In a November 4, 2019 announcement, Microsoft said Beta 79 was the final Beta before general availability and that it expected the Stable release on January 15. That was a planned date in the announcement; it does not by itself establish a specific shipping build or Catalina compatibility. Microsoft’s announcement described the new browser as Chromium-based and highlighted compatibility and developer tools. Treat that as Microsoft’s characterization, not an independent test result.
What you need to establish a real result
Before interpreting a pass or failure, write down the test conditions. A useful report should include:
- Browser: Edge channel and complete version/build number.
- Operating system: macOS 10.15 Catalina and its point release.
- Hardware: Mac model and processor architecture.
- Execution: Actual browser on the target Mac, or emulator; do not conflate the two.
- Method: Manual testing, automated testing, or both.
For a meaningful comparison, keep these dimensions distinct: browser build and channel, OS and architecture, real execution versus emulation, and manual versus automated workflow. A failure may depend on any of them; a report that says only “Edge 79 on Mac” is difficult to reproduce.

Test in the actual browser
- On the Catalina Mac, open Edge and record its complete version/build and channel. If Edge 79 is not already installed, do not assume a current download or support page provides a verified legacy installer. Confirm the provenance and safety of any historical installer before using it.
- Record the exact Catalina point release and Mac model or processor architecture.
- Open the website and exercise the user journeys that matter: navigation, forms, authentication, media, downloads, and any browser-specific functionality relevant to the site.
- Check responsive layouts separately at the viewport sizes you support. Note whether the size was set in the browser or represents a physical device.
- Repeat failures where possible and capture the browser console and network errors. Mark whether the result was observed manually or through automation.
Microsoft’s developer overview lists DevTools Protocol, Playwright, Puppeteer, WebDriver, and webhint among Edge testing and automation resources. These are current tool references, not a guarantee that a current tool version is compatible with historical Edge 79; verify version requirements before building an automated test around it. Use emulation for layout checks, not engine compatibility
Edge DevTools emulation can help approximate appearance at different screen sizes and resolutions and can override the user-agent string. It is useful for quick responsive-layout checks, but it does not reproduce differences in web API or CSS support between browsers. A layout that looks plausible in emulation is not proof that browser-specific behavior works in Edge 79. How Catalina and current Edge support statements apply
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance gives macOS 10.12 Sierra or higher as a broad minimum for Edge. Catalina is macOS 10.15, so it is above that general minimum; the statement is not a build-specific guarantee for Edge 79, nor proof of security or update availability on Catalina. Current support policies are a separate matter from historical compatibility. Microsoft’s operating-system page says macOS 11 Big Sur was supported from Edge 129 through 138, macOS 12 Monterey from Edge 139 through 150, and macOS 13 Ventura or later is required for Edge 151 and newer. It also says native Apple Silicon support began with Stable 88. These current ranges do not establish whether Edge 79 worked on Catalina or identify a verified last Catalina-compatible Edge release. Capture a reproducible screenshot
A screenshot can document a visual result, but it does not prove JavaScript, CSS feature support, or interaction behavior. For a local test, capture the page from the actual Edge 79/Catalina environment and include the build and OS details alongside the image. Troubleshoot common testing problems
- You cannot find a verified Edge 79 installer: The material available here does not establish a current legacy installer. Do not substitute a newer Edge version and call it an Edge 79 test; use an appropriately sourced historical build or report that the exact test could not be run.
- The site looks right in emulation but fails in Edge 79: Emulation does not model browser-engine differences in CSS and web APIs. Reproduce the issue in the actual target browser and record its build.
- An automation script fails before reaching the page: Check that the automation framework and browser driver support the exact historical Edge build, and confirm the browser binary and driver are the intended versions. Current tool recommendations do not guarantee compatibility with Edge 79.
- A test fails only on one Mac: Compare the recorded Catalina point release, processor architecture, browser channel, and build before attributing the cause to the website.
- A current Microsoft support page appears to conflict with the old test: Separate current OS support ranges from historical Edge 79 behavior. A present-day minimum or support transition is not a retrospective compatibility result.
Report the result precisely
State the Edge channel and full build, Catalina point release, Mac model or architecture, and whether the test ran in a real browser or an emulator. Add whether it was manual or automated, the steps exercised, and the observed failure or pass conditions. If any environment detail is unknown, say so rather than implying a verified compatibility result.
