A virtual device is a software-based phone or tablet environment that runs on your computer or through a hosted testing service. It lets you run and debug an app against selected device configurations without owning every model. Use virtual devices for frequent development checks; use physical devices when you need confidence in hardware-dependent behavior or real-world performance.
What is a virtual device for app testing?
A virtual device recreates a device environment in software so you can install, run, and debug an app against a chosen configuration. It is useful for checking app behavior across screen sizes and operating-system versions, but it is not necessarily a complete replica of the hardware.
Android Emulator and Android Virtual Device
Android Studio provides the Android Emulator, which simulates Android devices on a computer. An Android Virtual Device (AVD) is a configured virtual Android device used with the emulator. You can select device profiles and Android API levels to test without owning each physical device. Android describes the emulator as high fidelity, but that does not mean it reproduces every physical-device feature or performance characteristic. See Android Developers’ Android Emulator documentation and Firebase’s Android Virtual Devices guidance.
Apple Simulator
Xcode provides simulated-device run destinations through Simulator. Apple’s terminology is important: it is a simulated device, not a physical iPhone or a guarantee of complete hardware equivalence. Apple recommends simulated devices for debugging across hardware configurations that may not be available to you, while warning that Simulator does not replicate the performance or features of a physical device. See Apple’s guidance on running apps on simulated or physical devices.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Cloud device testing
A cloud device-testing service provides access to devices remotely, rather than requiring you to maintain every device locally. Google Cloud’s Device Run documentation describes physical and virtual Android devices and physical iOS devices. Catalogues, platform support, prices, and service limits can change, so confirm the current offering with the provider before planning coverage: Google Cloud Device Run documentation.
Should you use an emulator or a real device?
Use virtual devices to iterate quickly and repeatedly across useful configurations. Use real devices to validate features that depend on hardware and to assess actual device performance. Apple explicitly cautions that Simulator does not reproduce physical-device performance or features; Firebase notes that physical devices can cover functionality relying on features virtual devices do not simulate.

| Testing need | Best starting point | What it does and does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Frequent development checks and debugging | Local Android Emulator or Xcode Simulator | Run builds without owning every corresponding device; simulated results are not proof of all physical-device behavior. |
| Layout or behavior across configurations | Virtual device profiles and OS/API versions | Expose configuration-specific issues, but do not validate every hardware detail. |
| Feature that relies on device hardware | Physical device | Exercises actual device features that a virtual environment may not simulate. |
| Actual performance and device behavior | Representative physical device or devices | Provides evidence from real hardware; choose devices relevant to your audience and app features. |
| Broader remote device access | Cloud device-testing service | Can provide hosted access; verify current catalogue, platforms, pricing, and limits with the provider. |
Can you test an app without a physical phone?
Yes. You can run many development and debugging checks using Android Emulator or Xcode Simulator, and cloud services may offer remote device access. That can be enough for early iteration and repeatable checks. It is not enough to establish how a release behaves on actual hardware when the app relies on sensors or other device features, or when performance on the target device matters.
There is no universal number of physical devices or model list that guarantees coverage. Select representative devices based on the people you serve, the platforms and OS versions you support, and the hardware features your app uses.

A practical virtual-device testing workflow
- Choose a baseline environment. Start with the local Android Emulator or Xcode Simulator for the platform you are developing and a useful baseline device configuration.
- Use it during routine iteration. Run the app and repeat automated checks in a consistent virtual environment as you change the code.
- Add relevant configurations. Use device profiles and OS/API versions that reflect the screen sizes and software versions relevant to your app. A virtual configuration helps uncover differences; it does not certify behavior on every physical device.
- Validate hardware-dependent and release-critical behavior on real devices. Choose representative models based on your audience and the app’s features, rather than assuming one device covers every case.
- Consider hosted testing when local access is impractical. Before depending on a cloud service, verify its current device catalogue, supported platforms, pricing, and terms.
What virtual-device testing cannot tell you
- Physical performance: a simulated run does not establish the app’s speed or responsiveness on a target phone or tablet.
- Every hardware feature: virtual environments may not simulate sensors or other device capabilities your app uses.
- Universal device compatibility: testing selected profiles and OS/API versions does not prove compatibility with every physical model or configuration.
Use virtual results as a fast, repeatable part of a broader test strategy, not as a replacement for the physical-device checks your app’s risks require.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is an iOS Simulator the same as an emulator?
Apple calls its Xcode environment Simulator and describes its targets as simulated devices. It is not a physical iPhone or a full hardware replica.
Does a virtual-device test prove an app is ready to release?
No. It supports repeatable development checks, but hardware-dependent behavior and real-device performance should be validated on representative physical devices.
