To inspect a mobile app with Appium Inspector, install the standalone Inspector or use its Appium server plugin, connect it to a running Appium server, and start a session for the app and device you want to examine. Inspector pairs a screenshot with the app’s source so you can search for elements, review their available attributes, and interact with the screen. The exact setup and controls depend on the platform and Appium driver.
What you need before you start
For the standalone desktop app, you need a separately running Appium server, the appropriate platform driver, and an available device, emulator, or simulator compatible with your configuration. Inspector is a client; it does not replace the Appium server or install every platform driver for you. See the Appium Inspector project and Appium’s ecosystem tools documentation for current installation and system requirements.
Android and iOS sessions require different drivers and capabilities. Use the documentation for the driver you selected rather than copying a capability set from another platform. Inspector’s session form accepts server details and session capabilities, but the references here do not establish a complete, universal capability recipe for either platform.
Choose and install an Inspector version
The official project offers a desktop application for macOS, Windows, and Linux, as well as an Appium server plugin. The desktop app is a local graphical client; the plugin is an alternate route for users who want a web interface integrated with their Appium server. Follow the project’s current installation instructions for the route you choose. The available material does not establish that one route has more inspection features than the other.

Use the official Appium Inspector releases for downloads and version requirements. The release listing showed version 2026.9.2, released September 20, 2026, and stated macOS 13 (Ventura) as its minimum macOS version. These are point-in-time release details; check the current release before installing. Do not use inspector.appiumpro.com as an Appium-team service: the project says that site is no longer related to the Appium team.
Connect Inspector and start an app session
- Start Appium. Launch your Appium server and note its host, port, and base path. The values entered in Inspector must match the server configuration.
- Make the target available. Connect the physical device or start the emulator or simulator, and confirm it is usable by the selected Appium driver.
- Open Inspector. In the session setup area, enter the server connection details.
- Set session capabilities. Provide the platform, the appropriate automation driver, the target device or simulator identity, and the app path or application identifier as appropriate for your setup. Add other driver-specific capabilities required by the app or environment.
- Start the session. If it fails, use the server log and the troubleshooting steps below to identify whether the issue is the endpoint, driver, device, or capabilities.
Inspector’s header documentation describes session controls and their driver context, but capability names and supported options can change. Check the current session header documentation and relevant driver documentation for values that fit your installed versions.

Find and inspect elements
Once the session is active, Inspector displays the application screenshot alongside its source hierarchy. Select an element in the screenshot or source to inspect the information available for that element. Use the search controls to locate elements, then review the attributes exposed by the current app, platform, and driver.
Use an observed attribute as a candidate locator in your automation, not as a guarantee of stability. Available attributes and their values vary by app implementation, screen state, platform, and driver; an element that appears on one screen may change or disappear after navigation or a UI update. Confirm the locator in the intended app state and in the automation workflow that will use it.

Inspector also lets you interact with the app through supported controls and issue Appium commands. This makes it useful for exploring a screen and checking how the hierarchy responds to user actions, but available operations are driver-dependent.
Understand driver-specific controls and commands
System buttons and extra session controls differ across Android and Apple platforms and depend on the active driver. For example, the Inspector header documentation describes Android back, home, and app-switcher actions, as well as controls for iOS-family sessions. It notes that the display switcher requires UiAutomator2 6.6.0 or later on Android 11 or later. Check the current header documentation before relying on a particular control, since requirements are version-sensitive.

The Commands tab obtains commands from the active driver and plugins, but it uses WebdriverIO to issue them. The documented command list is limited to commands supported by WebdriverIO; a driver command that is not defined there may not work in this tab. If an expected command is missing, check the driver, active plugins, and client support, or invoke the operation through another Appium client if appropriate. See the Commands tab documentation.

Troubleshoot connection and inspection problems
- Inspector cannot reach the server: Confirm Appium is running, then compare Inspector’s host, port, and base path with the server’s actual endpoint.
- Session creation fails: Check that the required platform driver is installed and that the capabilities match that driver and the target platform. Read the Appium server log for the specific session-creation error.
- The device or simulator is unavailable: Verify that it is connected or running and that its identity and platform details match the session configuration.
- A control or command is missing: Confirm that the active driver and plugins support it, check any documented version or OS requirement, and account for WebdriverIO’s command support in the Commands tab.
- An element is hard to locate: Search the source and inspect the attributes available on the current screen. Recheck the app state and validate the candidate locator in the relevant automation workflow.
If the same behavior also occurs through another Appium client, the Inspector project recommends reporting it to the main Appium project. If it occurs only in Inspector, report it to the Inspector repository.
