A residential proxy routes a request through an IP address associated with a consumer internet connection, so a website sees the proxy’s exit IP rather than the requester’s original network address. It can help with authorized data collection that genuinely needs residential routing or geographic variation. It does not grant permission to scrape, make a use lawful, or guarantee that a site will accept a request.

How do residential proxies work?

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center defines one as “an intermediary server between individuals and websites they visit to make their connections appear to originate elsewhere.” In a typical request:

  1. Your scraper sends a request to a proxy provider’s gateway.
  2. The provider forwards it through a participating residential device or connection.
  3. The destination receives the request from that exit IP and returns its response along the route.
  4. Depending on the service’s configuration, the provider may choose a new exit IP for a request or retain one for a session.

The main change is the source IP presented to the destination. A residential proxy is not complete anonymity, identity protection, or a guaranteed way around bot detection. The FBI has documented criminal misuse and account-takeover scenarios involving residential proxies; a study of particular user-installed networks also observed both benign and harmful traffic. Those findings do not establish that every provider or user behaves the same way.

Are residential proxies good for web scraping?

They may suit an authorized workflow if it requires residential routing, geographic variation, or multiple exit identities. Provider policies cite possible applications such as market and pricing research, brand protection, ad verification, SEO and search monitoring, localization and availability testing, authorized security research, and lawful public-web data collection. Those are examples of workflows a provider may permit, not blanket permission from the websites involved.

Before choosing a proxy, check whether direct access, an official API, a data license, a permissioned feed, or a less costly proxy type meets the requirement. Available evidence does not establish that residential proxies generally outperform those alternatives or reduce blocking by a predictable amount. No broadly applicable, independently comparable success-rate, latency, or cost-savings figure is established here.

Should I use rotating or sticky residential proxies?

Choose based on what the workflow needs, not on an assumption that one mode is universally better. A provider’s setup guide recommends rotating exits for broad crawling and sticky sessions when multiple steps need the same IP; that is vendor-authored guidance, not an independent benchmark proving a universal best setting.

  • Rotation: A new exit IP may be selected across requests. This can fit a permitted workflow that needs distributed requests or different apparent locations.
  • Sticky session: The same exit IP is retained for a session. This can fit a multi-step interaction that depends on continuity.

Neither mode guarantees that requests will succeed or be accepted. Compare providers only on a permitted workload with comparable targets, and record success, latency, data consumption, and cost per usable result. Do not treat advertised pool size or an isolated test as proof of general performance.

Are residential proxies better than datacenter proxies?

There is no evidence here establishing a universal performance or cost advantage for residential proxies over datacenter proxies. The relevant choice depends on the target, permission, workflow, location needs, technical integration, reliability requirements, and cost. If a less costly proxy type or an official source satisfies the authorized task, residential routing may add complexity without a demonstrated benefit.

What should you check before choosing a provider?

  • Sourcing and consent: Ask how people are informed that their connections may carry traffic, what they consent to, how they can opt out, and how upstream suppliers are reviewed.
  • Permission and policy: Review the target website’s rules, applicable law, the data involved, and the provider’s acceptable-use policy. A provider supplies connectivity; it does not authorize access to third-party content or services. Infatica’s policy says: “Infatica provides connectivity and proxy infrastructure only and does not authorize Customer to access, collect, scrape, copy, use, resell, or exploit any third-party content, data, account, system, or service.”
  • Workflow fit: Check rotation and session options, location granularity, protocol and integration support, and whether the task truly requires residential exits.
  • Reliability and cost: Run a permitted, relevant test and compare success, latency, data use, and cost per usable result. No general market benchmark is established here.
  • Operational risk: Ask about support, abuse response, data handling, and how the provider investigates complaints or suspicious activity.

A provider’s statements about sourcing are disclosures, not independent proof of every upstream source. Ask for details rather than inferring consent or quality from a vendor’s description alone.

Is web scraping legal?

There is no single answer for every target, purpose, dataset, and jurisdiction. A proxy changes the network path; it does not settle legal permission. Public visibility, a residential IP address, or a robots.txt convention does not by itself answer whether a particular collection is lawful or permitted under a site’s terms. The sources cited here do not establish a jurisdiction-specific legal rule or the terms of any particular target website.

Before sending traffic, define and document the target, purpose, data fields, collection rate, retention period, and legal basis. Check site rules, access controls, rate limits, applicable privacy requirements, and any contractual restrictions. Do not collect private, login-protected, personal, or sensitive data unless the activity has been specifically authorized and reviewed. For legal advice about a particular project, consult a qualified professional in the relevant jurisdiction.

Could a residential proxy expose someone else’s device?

It can, depending on how the network obtains residential connections. The FBI says residential addresses may come from consenting device owners or owners who are unaware. It describes SDK partnerships, hidden VPN terms, compromised IoT equipment, malware, and bandwidth-sharing applications among possible acquisition paths and risks. The existence of these risks does not prove that every service uses them; buyers should ask how participants are informed and how consent and opt-out are managed.

The risk also matters to ordinary device owners. The FBI recommends caution with free VPN apps, dubious free streaming devices, pirated downloads, unofficial app stores, and sideloaded software, and recommends keeping device software and firmware updated. A proxy operator should protect the people whose connections carry traffic, while device owners should be wary of software that may enroll a connection without clear consent.

Can ScreenshotNeo take a screenshot through a proxy?

If the actual task is to capture a page visually rather than collect data through residential exits, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It is an alternative to try first for that screenshot use case; it does not replace a proxy or grant permission to access a website. You can make a single GET request for a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its documented options include custom headers, cookies, user agent, timezone, and geolocation; the service does not state that these options provide residential proxy routing.

For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of Stripe’s public page as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request parameters and response details. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Or skip the browser setup:

Cookie banners are accepted before capture and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use the MCP server. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

FAQ

Does a residential proxy hide my identity?

It changes the source IP the destination sees; it does not guarantee anonymity or protect every other identifying detail in a request.

Does a residential IP guarantee a site will accept a request?

No. The destination decides whether to respond, and the proxy does not guarantee technical access.
