A static site generator (SSG) turns content and templates into pages before a visitor asks for them. Choose one by checking whether your content can be prepared ahead of time, how fresh it must be, how your team wants to author it, what interactivity it needs, and where the generated files will run. No single generator is best for every site.
What is a static site generator?
An SSG combines source material—such as Markdown files, data, and templates—and generates pages, usually HTML, before a visitor requests them. The published site can then consist of files served by a web host or CDN. For example, Jekyll documents converting Markdown pages to HTML and placing generated output in _site; Next.js describes static generation as preparing pages ahead of a request. You generally edit the source content and templates, not each generated HTML page by hand. The generator rebuilds output when you publish changes. This makes the word “static” about how a page is delivered, not a claim that the source site can never be interactive.
When does static generation fit?
Ask whether a page can be prepared before a visitor arrives. Blogs, documentation, portfolios, marketing pages, help pages, and product listings are examples of content that can often be generated in advance. Next.js documentation

It is also a good fit when the content changes occasionally rather than needing a new value for every request. Astro’s documentation describes content collections as suitable for relatively stable content; live stock prices are an example of information that may need a fresher, request-time approach. Static output does not rule out client-side behavior or server rendering. A site can use generated pages for stable sections and fetch current data in the browser or render selected pages on a server. Next.js documents client-side fetching and server-side rendering as alternatives when pre-rendering does not suit a page’s needs. Next.js static generation documentation

How to choose a generator
- Separate pages by freshness needs. List which pages can be updated during a build and which require information that can change for each visit. A frequently changing value may call for client-side fetching or server rendering rather than relying on a static build alone.
- Match the authoring workflow. Check the formats and content organization your team needs. Astro documents local content loaders for Markdown, MDX, Markdoc, YAML, TOML, and JSON. Jekyll documents Markdown pages and configurable collections. Those differences affect how writers create and organize material. Astro content collections documentation · Jekyll pages documentation
- Choose for the team that will maintain it. Compare the languages, framework concepts, templates, integrations, and publishing workflow the people responsible for the site can comfortably support. The available documentation describes different workflows; it does not establish a universally best generator.
- Account for interactivity and runtime behavior. Identify which features can run in the browser and which need server-side work or fresh data on each request. A framework may offer static generation alongside other rendering modes; the label “SSG” alone does not tell you whether every page must be static. Next.js documentation
- Confirm the deployment path. Find out what directory the build produces, how that output reaches your host, and whether any pages need a server runtime. Jekyll describes copying generated output to a host, including Amazon S3 as an example. Jekyll deployment documentation
Static site generator or full framework?
The term covers both purpose-built content tools and broader web frameworks that include static generation as one option. For example, Next.js presents static generation as a rendering mode, while Gatsby compares frameworks and generators across static-content capabilities. Rather than relying on category labels, check the actual page-rendering options, content model, integrations, and deployment requirements the project needs. Build-time output versus request-time behavior
With build-time generation, prepared files can be served without generating the page anew for every visit. That can simplify delivery for suitable content, but it does not mean every site or hosting setup will be faster. Next.js recommends static generation when possible because a page can be built once and served by a CDN; that is the framework’s guidance, not a universal benchmark. Next.js documentation

If a page must reflect information that changes on each request, consider server rendering or client-side data fetching for that part of the site. The choice is about freshness and behavior as much as delivery architecture.
Where does generated output run?
Generated files can be deployed to standard hosting that serves static files; a special application server is not inherently required just to deliver them. Jekyll documents copying its generated directory to a host and gives Amazon S3 as an example. It also documents GitHub Pages. Confirm your chosen host’s current deployment process and whether it supports any dynamic behavior your site requires. Jekyll deployment documentation · Jekyll and GitHub Pages documentation

If your site workflow also needs screenshots of web pages, you can request one from ScreenshotNeo, a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API accepts one GET request with a URL and returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo.
