If VALORANT opens to a black screen, restart your PC first. Riot specifically recommended restarting, then cleanly reinstalling the graphics driver, for a black-screen launch issue reported after patch 10.05. That notice is patch-specific, not a diagnosis for every black screen. If a restart does not help, work through the low-risk checks below before reinstalling the game or Vanguard.
Why does VALORANT launch to a black screen?
A black screen does not point to one confirmed cause on its own. Riot’s general launch-crash guidance identifies possibilities including outdated or corrupted files, graphics-driver issues, and interference from background programs. Without an error code, logs, or details about your PC, the symptom alone cannot establish which one applies.
Riot’s patch 10.05 support notice described VALORANT failing to launch or opening to a black screen after that patch. Its recommended order was to restart the PC, then try a clean graphics-driver reinstall if restarting did not help. What to try first when the game window is black
1. Restart Windows
Close what you can, restart the PC fully, then open Riot Client and launch VALORANT again. This is Riot’s first recommendation in its patch 10.05 black-screen notice and is the simplest step to try.

2. Reset the graphics driver if Windows is also blank
If the desktop itself has a blank screen, press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. Microsoft describes this keyboard shortcut as a way to reset the graphics driver. It is a general Windows recovery action, not a VALORANT-specific repair; if only the game window is black while the desktop works, it may not address the cause. 3. Update or cleanly reinstall the graphics driver
Riot’s patch-specific notice recommends a clean graphics-driver reinstall if restarting does not resolve the reported black screen. Riot’s broader crash guidance also lists graphics-driver updates among general troubleshooting steps. Get the driver from your graphics-card maker’s official support channel and follow its clean-install instructions; the cited guidance does not require a third-party driver-cleaning utility. 4. Install available Windows updates
Check Windows Update, install available updates, and restart if Windows asks you to. Riot includes Windows updates in its general PC-crash guidance. This is a general compatibility and stability check, not a confirmed fix for every black screen.
Check for software conflicts and graphics settings
5. Use a clean boot to check background interference
Riot recommends a clean boot as a way to check whether background processes interfere with launching. If VALORANT works in a clean-boot state, re-enable services selectively to narrow down the conflict. Do not leave security services or other essential protections disabled as a permanent workaround. 6. Reset graphics software settings to defaults
Graphics software can override a game’s own settings. Riot’s general crash guidance suggests resetting graphics software settings to their defaults. This is an optional general troubleshooting step, and it may be less useful if you cannot get into VALORANT at all.
7. Check firewall or third-party antivirus interference carefully
Riot’s launch-crash guidance includes checking firewall rules and whether third-party antivirus software is interfering. Do not leave antivirus protection turned off. If you temporarily test whether it is involved, restore protection promptly; use Riot’s official exception guidance where applicable rather than broadly weakening your security settings.

Try game-level steps only when they are actionable
8. Repair or reinstall VALORANT and Vanguard as a later step
Riot lists reinstalling VALORANT and Vanguard among later launch-crash troubleshooting steps. Try this only after the simpler checks, since reinstalling takes more time and the guidance does not promise it will resolve a black screen. 9. Lower video settings if you can reach the game settings
If VALORANT opens far enough to reach its settings but crashes later, try lowering its video settings. Riot includes reduced graphics settings in general PC-crash guidance as a way to reduce the game’s workload. This is not a direct option while the game remains inaccessible at startup.

When to contact Riot Support
If the ordered checks do not resolve the problem, submit a ticket to Riot Player Support and include the logs Riot requests. Logs and any error code can help support investigate; a black screen by itself is not enough to identify a specific cause. Riot’s PC crash guidance directs players with continuing trouble to contact support with logs.
