The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra offers two dedicated optical telephoto zoom levels: 3x and 10x. Its advertised maximum is 100x Space Zoom, but that is not 100x optical zoom: Samsung describes it as 10x optical zoom combined with 10x digital zoom and AI Super Resolution. Samsung also warns that image deterioration may occur beyond 10x.
What zoom levels does the Galaxy S22 Ultra have?
Samsung lists separate 10MP telephoto cameras with 3x and 10x optical zoom on the Galaxy S22 Ultra, alongside a 108MP wide camera and a 12MP ultra-wide camera. The 3x and 10x figures describe the phone’s dedicated optical telephoto levels; they are distinct from the higher magnifications generated computationally. See Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra specifications. Samsung notes that specifications may vary by market and carrier.
What does 100x Space Zoom mean?
Samsung advertises a maximum of 100x Space Zoom. Its specification page and 2022 launch announcement describe this as 10x optical zoom plus 10x digital zoom with AI Super Resolution—not a lens providing 100x optical magnification. At magnifications beyond the 10x optical level, the phone relies on digital and computational processing. Samsung’s launch announcement also explains the 100x figure.
How should you think about image quality at high zoom?
Samsung’s official specification page cautions: “Zooming in past 10x may cause some image deterioration.” That warning identifies a potential trade-off, not a universal quality cutoff: the manufacturer specifications do not guarantee a particular result at every magnification or shooting condition.

In practical use, assess the shot rather than treating the 100x maximum as a promise of consistently clear detail. Lighting, subject movement, camera stability and the size at which you plan to view or share the image all matter when judging a highly magnified photo. Samsung’s published material establishes the zoom system and its caution, but does not provide a controlled comparison across those conditions.
Which zoom level should you use?
| Zoom level | How it is produced | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 3x | Dedicated 3x optical telephoto camera | One of Samsung’s specified optical telephoto levels. |
| 10x | Dedicated 10x optical telephoto camera | The highest dedicated optical level listed by Samsung. |
| Beyond 10x, up to 100x | Digital zoom and AI Super Resolution beyond the 10x optical level | Samsung warns that image deterioration may occur past 10x; the specifications do not establish a guaranteed result at a particular setting. |
For a distant subject, try the dedicated 3x or 10x level first and check the captured image. Move to higher magnification when framing requires it, while keeping the phone steady and accounting for movement and available light. Choose the setting that gives you a useful composition at the intended viewing size rather than assuming the largest number will give the best-looking image.

- The S22 Ultra combines the strengths of the S‑series and the legacy of the Note lineage by including a built‑in S Pen with ultra‑low latency. That means you can write, sketch, annotate PDFs, control media, or even take photos with the pen — essentially turning the phone into a productivity and creativity tool beyond ordinary smartphones.
What Samsung’s zoom figures do—and do not—tell you
The figures answer how far the camera system is advertised to zoom, not how much fine detail every 100x image will retain. Samsung’s published specifications are product claims, not independent measurements of effective reach or image quality. They do not establish a single practical cutoff beyond which every photo will be unusable, or a controlled quality comparison between magnifications.
