An AI prompt is the input you give a model to guide its response. In a text chat, that usually means your question or instruction; systems that handle multiple types of input may also accept images or audio. A useful prompt names the task, supplies the context the model needs, and describes what a helpful answer should look like. Then review the response and refine your request if needed.

What is an AI prompt?

OpenAI defines a prompt for a large language model as “a text input that initiates a conversation or triggers a response from the model.” In everyday text chat, a prompt is the request or instruction you type. Some models also accept other input, such as an image or audio, so a prompt is not always text alone. OpenAI’s prompt engineering guide explains the term and its use.

Prompt engineering means designing and optimizing inputs to guide a language model’s responses. You do not need special terminology to do it: tell the model what you want, give it relevant information, and make the desired result clear.

What should you include in a prompt?

For most beginner tasks, build the request from three parts: task, context, and output. OpenAI’s guidance recommends clear instructions and useful context; it also encourages trying a response and refining the request. OpenAI’s prompt-engineering best practices offer additional guidance.

  • Task: Say what action you want, such as summarize, explain, compare, draft, or classify.
  • Context: Include information that affects the answer: who it is for, the situation, relevant source material, or constraints.
  • Output: Specify a useful form or level of detail, such as a short explanation, a table, or a draft email. You can also name the intended audience and tone.

For example, “Help with my presentation” leaves the subject, audience, and deliverable unclear. A more specific version is: “Draft a five-slide outline explaining household composting to apartment residents who have never composted. Keep the language plain, include one practical example per slide, and flag any local rules I need to check.” This is an illustrative example, not a wording format that has been experimentally proven to work better.

How do you improve a prompt that gets a poor answer?

Treat the first response as a starting point. Check whether the model understood the task, had enough context, and used the format or level of detail you wanted. Then give a targeted follow-up rather than repeating the whole request without explanation.

  • If the answer is too broad, narrow the scope or specify what to leave out.
  • If it made an assumption, correct it and provide the missing facts.
  • If it is hard to use, ask for a different format or level of detail.
  • If the tone is wrong, state the audience and the style you want.

For the composting outline, if the answer is too technical, you could follow up: “Rewrite for a middle-school reading level and define any unavoidable technical terms.” The general method—review, clarify, and add relevant context—is recommended in OpenAI’s prompt-engineering best practices.

How should you prompt for a complex task?

Do not assume that a longer prompt is automatically better. Include details that change the result and omit instructions that do not. When a task involves several kinds of work, split it into focused requests so you can check each stage before moving on.

  1. Organize the material: Provide the relevant documents or facts and ask the model to extract or arrange what matters.
  2. Request the main work: Ask for the draft or analysis, specifying the audience, constraints, and output format.
  3. Review against criteria: Check the result for omissions or mistakes, then ask for revisions tied to those criteria.

This can make a broad assignment easier to manage than asking for every stage at once. OpenAI recommends breaking complex tasks into smaller, focused prompts and working iteratively in its prompt-engineering guidance.

Do prompts work the same way in every AI tool?

The basic advice—state the task clearly, provide relevant context, and specify the result you need—is broadly useful. More specific behavior depends on the platform, model, and interface. For example, OpenAI’s API uses message roles, and its documentation says system or developer instructions take precedence over user messages. OpenAI’s guide suggests putting overall tone or role guidance in a system message and task-specific details or examples in user messages. OpenAI’s API prompting guide describes that setup.

A consumer chat interface may hide or manage these roles for you, and other providers may use different conventions. Do not assume that instructions about OpenAI API roles apply unchanged to every chatbot.

Can a good prompt guarantee a correct answer?

No. Clearer prompts can communicate what you want, but they do not guarantee accuracy. OpenAI notes that model outputs are non-deterministic: responses can differ across model types and even snapshots within the same model family. For applications that need consistent behavior, OpenAI recommends pinning a model snapshot and using evaluations to monitor changes as prompts or models are updated. See its prompt engineering guidance.

For ordinary use, check important claims rather than treating a confident-sounding answer as proof. If an answer seems wrong or incomplete, provide the relevant source or correct information and ask the model to revise it.
