Automate website monitoring in layers: use scheduled HTTP checks to detect reachability problems, scripted API checks to validate service transactions, and browser journeys to confirm a small number of important user actions still work. A successful ping proves only that the tested endpoint met its check; it does not prove that a visitor can sign in, add an item, or check out.

Choose the check that matches the question

Website monitoring is not one test. The useful distinction is between an endpoint being reachable and a user-facing workflow functioning. A monitor can return green while the page’s JavaScript is broken, an API dependency is failing, or checkout cannot complete. Google Cloud, Elastic, and New Relic document checks at different depths, from endpoints through scripted journeys (Google Cloud; Elastic; New Relic).

Check layer What it can establish What it cannot establish alone Good fit
Endpoint / uptime check An endpoint responded with the expected status or body, and optionally within a latency threshold. That a complete application workflow works. Broad, lightweight coverage of public pages and health endpoints.
Scripted API check Chained requests, authentication or state handling, response payloads, and service transactions behave as asserted. That the rendered interface and browser interactions work. Transactions and dependencies testable through APIs.
Browser journey A real browser can load and interact with a rendered page and complete a defined sequence of actions. Every possible user path or production condition. A small set of high-value actions such as login, cart, and checkout.

Use the least complex check that answers the operational question. Browser journeys exercise more of the stack, but scripted browser monitors can be more resource-intensive than simpler checks, so reserve them for failures with meaningful user or business impact.

Build a layered monitoring workflow

1. Inventory what must keep working

List public pages, key APIs, third-party dependencies, and user journeys whose failure would block a visitor or business operation. For each item, define an observable pass condition: an expected status or response string, a payload value, a page element, or a completed transaction. This prevents a monitor from being considered useful merely because it runs.

2. Cover public availability with HTTP checks

Schedule HTTP or HTTPS checks for important public endpoints. Validate the response status and, where useful, a stable body marker; add a response-time threshold only when latency is operationally meaningful. For example, a check might request /health and pass only when the response is successful and includes the expected service marker. The endpoint and interval should be chosen for your own application, not copied as a universal prescription.

A broad ping provides an availability signal, not a functional guarantee. New Relic explicitly describes pings as an initial availability check and distinguishes them from checks for functionality (New Relic use cases).

3. Assert service transactions through APIs

For a transaction expressible at the API layer, chain the requests, carry required authentication and state, and assert on status, response data, and timing. A representative storefront check could authenticate to a dedicated test account, fetch an item, submit a cart request, and verify the expected item and total. Keep credentials in the monitoring platform’s secure credential mechanism rather than embedding tokens or keys in monitor source. New Relic documents scripted API checks for business transactions and third-party dependencies, as well as secure credentials for secrets (New Relic use cases).

4. Validate critical user journeys in a browser

Use a browser monitor when the question depends on JavaScript, loaded assets, rendering, or actual user actions. A focused journey might open the storefront, sign in with a dedicated test account, add an item, proceed toward checkout, and assert a stable confirmation element. Choose selectors and assertions that reflect a user-visible outcome rather than a fragile implementation detail. Use a safe test transaction and avoid unnecessary order creation.

Google Cloud and Elastic document browser journeys such as login, cart, and checkout; New Relic describes simple browser checks that assert for an expected page element, such as an “Add to cart” button (Google Cloud overview; Elastic Synthetics; New Relic use cases).

5. Connect checks to release and operations

Where the platform supports configuration as code, store monitor definitions with the application and review changes alongside code. Elastic documents YAML and JavaScript/TypeScript project monitors, Git versioning, and CLI deployment commonly run from CI/CD (Elastic quickstart). A practical pattern is to run a focused check against a preview or staging deployment before release, then retain scheduled production checks after release.

Route alerts to a channel with a clear owner. Include enough context to identify what failed: endpoint or journey name, failed assertion or step, execution time, and relevant logs or screenshots when available. Google Cloud documents execution results, logs, and metrics; Elastic describes alert details that can include the failed step, screenshots, and executed code (Google Cloud overview; Elastic quickstart).

Schedule checks and set failure policy deliberately

Frequency is a tradeoff: shorter intervals can reveal a failure sooner, while every execution adds load and may affect cost. Set cadence according to the detection window your service objective requires, the requests your system can absorb, and the platform’s pricing. Do not apply one schedule to every endpoint and browser journey by default.

Decide what constitutes an alert, including whether one failure is enough or whether failures must be consecutive. Google Cloud’s documented synthetic-monitor creation flow describes a default alert condition of two or more consecutive failures; that is a platform-specific example, not a universal monitoring rule. Its documentation also cautions that execution frequency affects load and cost (Google Cloud: Create a synthetic monitor).

For coverage location and platform selection, compare public versus private execution locations, supported browsers and runtimes, scheduling and consecutive-failure behavior, alert destinations, diagnostics, configuration-as-code support, geographic choices, and the load and cost of the selected frequency. Those are decision criteria, not a scored vendor comparison.

Diagnose failures without confusing symptoms

  • Endpoint check fails: Inspect the endpoint’s status, response body, latency, and execution location. Determine whether the service is unavailable or the assertion became stale.
  • Endpoint passes but API transaction fails: Find the first failing request and inspect authentication, carried state, payload assertions, and dependency responses. A successful ping does not rule out a service-level failure.
  • API checks pass but browser journey fails: Use the failed browser step and available screenshots or logs to distinguish a rendering or interaction problem from a selector or test-data issue.
  • Intermittent alerts: Compare execution history and timing with the configured failure policy. Improve the assertion or test data when the signal is misleading; suppressing a monitor without understanding the failure can hide a real regression.

Google Cloud exposes execution results, logs, and metrics, while Elastic’s project-monitor workflow documents failure details such as screenshots, step information, and executed code. The diagnostics available depend on the platform and check type (Google Cloud overview; Elastic quickstart).

Platform examples and documented scope

  • Google Cloud Monitoring: Documents public and private uptime checks and synthetic monitors for endpoints and scripted journeys. Its synthetic monitor implementation uses a Node.js Cloud Run function; configuration frequency should account for service objectives, load, and cost (overview; creation guide).
  • Elastic Synthetics: Documents HTTP, ICMP, TCP, and real-browser monitors, managed global testing infrastructure and private locations, and project monitors that can be versioned and deployed by CLI in CI/CD (monitoring guide; quickstart).
  • New Relic Synthetics: Documents scheduled pings, scripted API checks, simple browser checks, scripted browser journeys, and public or private locations (use cases).
  • Amazon CloudWatch Synthetics: Documents canaries for endpoints, URLs, and site content, with Node.js/Python browser automation options and stored load-time data and screenshots (CloudWatch Synthetics canaries).

These are examples from product documentation, not independently tested recommendations. Product capabilities and interfaces can change; consult the linked current documentation before implementing platform-specific details.

For visual checks and screenshot evidence during an investigation, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server; it complements scheduled monitoring rather than replacing endpoint, API, or journey alerts. One GET request captures a URL as an image or PDF:

ScreenshotNeo API documentation

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a screenshot by itself tell me whether a site is up?

It can provide visual evidence of the page returned for that capture, but it is not a substitute for an availability monitor with an explicit pass condition and alert policy.

Should every page get a browser journey?

No. Apply browser checks to a small set of user paths whose failure matters; use lighter endpoint or API checks for broader coverage.
