You can sell ads on a WordPress blog in two main ways: apply to an ad network such as Google AdSense, or sell placements directly to advertisers. First identify whether your site is self-hosted WordPress or WordPress.com; then choose a sales route, prepare the site, and follow the relevant setup and monitoring steps. AdSense ads will not serve until Google has reviewed the site and marked it “Ready.”
First, identify which WordPress you use
WordPress can refer to the open-source software you install on a web host (WordPress.org) or Automattic’s hosted WordPress.com service. The distinction matters because ad setup may require access to site HTML, plugins, themes, or files. Google says publishers need access to their site’s HTML or an integration method to use AdSense, and advises hosted-site users to check their host’s terms. WordPress.com permissions can vary by plan, so check the current rules for your specific plan rather than assuming a plugin or third-party ad service is allowed. Choose how you will sell the ads
| Factor | Automated network ads | Direct-sold placements |
|---|---|---|
| Who finds advertisers? | The network handles advertiser demand and auctioning; the publisher applies and sets up the site. | You identify prospects, pitch placements, and agree campaign terms. |
| Approval | Requires ownership verification and network review. Google requires a “Ready” status before its ads can serve. | No AdSense review is involved, but you still need to assess the creative and destination and comply with applicable rules. |
| Control | Placement and creative options depend on the network and your configuration. | You define the placement, campaign dates, creative requirements, and reporting terms with the advertiser. |
| Operational work | Set up code or an integration, monitor account notices and delivery, and maintain policy compliance. | Find buyers, handle agreements and assets, schedule campaigns, publish placements, and report delivery. |
| Income expectation | Depends on auction demand and actual traffic and ad delivery; no earnings amount is established here. | Depends on the deal you negotiate; no standard rate or conversion benchmark is established here. |
The two approaches can coexist, but keep each placement and its obligations clear. A WordPress ad-management plugin can help insert or schedule units; it does not find advertisers or guarantee sales. For example, the Advanced Ads directory listing describes creating ad units, scheduling, targeting, and inserting ads from networks and affiliate programs. The Inpweb Ad Spaces listing describes direct banner management. These are publisher-maintained plugin descriptions, not independent evaluations. Set up Google AdSense step by step
- Confirm the site is live and under your control. It must be publicly reachable, and you need to complete the ownership check. Google may verify ownership through ad code, an ads.txt file, or a meta tag. Google AdSense site management
- Make the site useful and navigable before applying. Google lists insufficient unique content or user experience, an unreachable site, incomplete ad code, and policy violations among reasons a site may not be ready. Google AdSense: Site readiness
- Add the site in AdSense and complete the account’s tasks. Follow the verification and review instructions shown in your account. Google states that a site may serve ads only after it passes review and has “Ready” status. Its guidance says review usually takes a few days, though some cases take 2–4 weeks; that is an estimate, not a service-level guarantee. Google AdSense site management · Google AdSense: Site readiness
- Install the code using an approach supported by your WordPress setup. Options may include a suitable plugin, theme, widget, or documented code placement. Google notes that it is not responsible for actions of non-Google plugins; check a plugin’s current support and compatibility rather than treating its directory listing as an endorsement. Google AdSense: Place the ad code on your WordPress site
- Choose clear placements and labels. Google allows “Advertisements” or “Sponsored Links” as labels for Google ads. Do not ask readers to click, or design placements that encourage accidental clicks. Keep ads distinguishable from navigation and editorial links. Google AdSense: Ad placement policies
- Check account status after setup. Review site and ads.txt status in AdSense and act on policy notices. Do not assume that installing code alone means ads are eligible to appear. Google AdSense site management · Google AdSense: ads.txt guide
Sell placements directly to advertisers
Define the inventory
Decide exactly what is for sale before contacting brands: for example, a banner in a named location, a sponsorship mention, or a campaign that runs for specified dates. State where the placement appears, its dimensions where relevant, and when it is available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePrepare a concise media sheet
Include a clear description of the audience, the placement and its location, availability, creative requirements, and a contact method. Use only audience evidence you can substantiate; do not imply traffic, engagement, or outcomes you have not measured.
Pitch, agree, and publish
- Make a shortlist of brands or agencies whose products fit the readership.
- Explain the placement and provide the media sheet. Agree in writing on the creative, location, campaign dates, payment terms, and what delivery information you will report.
- Review the ad creative and its destination before it goes live. Label sponsorship clearly so readers can distinguish paid content from editorial material.
- Schedule the placement and keep a record of its start and end dates. Report only the delivery information you have actually tracked.
There is no established standard price, contract template, marketplace, or typical conversion rate for direct sales in the available sources. Set terms based on your own substantiated audience information and the specific agreement rather than presenting a rate as universal.

Understand ads.txt and authorized sellers
Google describes ads.txt as a text file at the root of your domain that identifies authorized exchanges or supply-side platforms and seller IDs. If you use it, the entries must contain the values associated with your own account; an incorrect publisher ID can mean no auction for a request. A WordPress plugin may help create the file, but verify the published file yourself and make sure it is crawlable. Google says changes can take a few days to appear in AdSense, or up to a month on sites with few ad requests. Google AdSense: ads.txt guide · Google AdSense: Make ads.txt crawlable
Check these items when ads do not appear
- AdSense has not approved the site: Check the site status in the account and complete any ownership or review tasks. Ads require “Ready” status.
- The site is not ready: Check reachability, useful unique content, user experience, complete code, and policy notices against Google’s readiness guidance.
- The setup method is incompatible: Confirm that your WordPress host and plan permit the integration you chose, and check current plugin or theme compatibility.
- ads.txt is missing or incorrect: Confirm the file is at the domain root, is crawlable, and uses your correct account values. Allow for Google’s stated processing time.
- A placement risks accidental clicks: Separate ads visually from navigation and editorial links, and remove any prompt encouraging clicks.
