Use Google Search Console to see how your site performed in Google Search by country, query, and page. Use a rank tracker when you need scheduled checks of a chosen keyword list in specific countries, locations, languages, or devices. These methods measure different things: Search Console reports observed impressions, clicks, click-through rate, and average position; a rank tracker checks selected searches under settings you configure.

Method What it tells you Best for
Google Search Console Clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position for your site’s reported Google Search appearances, grouped by dimensions such as country, query, and page. Understanding which searches and pages are already surfacing in Google and how reported performance changes by market.
Rank tracker Positions for a selected keyword set, sampled according to configured search engine, location, language, device, and schedule. Monitoring chosen keywords regularly in specific markets, including places more granular than a country where the service supports them.

Search Console is free to use for a verified property; it does not promise a complete record of every possible search or show one fixed rank that every searcher sees. A tracker fills a different need, but its results cover the keywords and settings you selected, not every query that may bring visitors to your site. Google explains the Search Console metrics and dimensions in its performance reporting overview.

Check country performance in Google Search Console

  1. Open the right property. Verify your website in Google Search Console, then open the Search results report under Performance.
  2. Set the reporting period. Choose the date range you want to examine. Use comparable date ranges when checking whether performance changed.
  3. Enable the metrics you need. The report can show clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position. Google describes these metrics and the report’s setup in its Search results Performance report documentation.
  4. Filter for a market. In the report’s dimensions, select Countries and choose the country you want to inspect. Then review Queries and Pages for that scope.
  5. Compare markets or dates. Compare countries or date periods to identify changes in reported clicks, impressions, CTR, or position. Google’s guide to filtering and limits in Search Console performance data discusses country-filtered analysis and comparing pages or queries over time.

How to read average position

Average position is an aggregate report metric, not a guaranteed live rank. Google defines the chart’s average position as the position of the topmost result from your site for the selected grouping; a table row can report the position for the selected URL or grouping. The grouping and report scope matter when interpreting it.

A manual search may not match the report. Google’s Search Console documentation cautions: “Even if a query appears in your list, you might not see your site in results if you run the same query in Google.” That is why a country filter is useful for analyzing reported performance, but does not establish the exact position seen by every person in that country.

Track chosen keywords on a schedule

If your question is “where does this chosen keyword rank in each target market?”, set up a rank-tracking campaign for each relevant country. Keep the comparison controlled: use the same keyword, search engine, location, language, device, and date cadence when comparing markets or periods.

Configure the tracking scope

  • Search engine: select the engine whose results you want to monitor.
  • Location: choose the target country or, if supported, a state or region, city, or postal code. National and local targeting are not interchangeable.
  • Language: set the language relevant to the search you intend to measure.
  • Device: choose desktop or mobile as appropriate; do not compare one device’s results with another as if they were the same scope.
  • Keywords: define a deliberate list of target queries. A tracker reports that list, so it will not automatically represent every query your site receives.
  • Schedule and history: use recurring checks and compare trends over time rather than treating one sampled result as definitive.

Semrush documents location selection by country, state or region, city, and ZIP or postal code, along with search engine and other setup choices, in its Position Tracking configuration guide. Its documentation also describes daily monitoring of selected keywords and variations in device, location, language, and search engine: see Track your rankings and What is Position Tracking?. Available location and reporting options depend on the tracker you choose.

Make country comparisons meaningful

Before interpreting a difference as a market change, check that you are comparing like with like. Search Console and rank-tracking results are comparable only when their scopes are understood and, for tracker comparisons, settings remain consistent.

  • For Search Console, retain the same property, metric, date range, and report dimensions; note that its data reflects reported site appearances available in the system.
  • For a rank tracker, retain the same keyword, search engine, target location, language, and device across checks.
  • Distinguish national visibility from a city- or postal-code-level check.
  • Use trends across repeated observations for tracking; use Search Console’s clicks and impressions to understand observed performance, not just position.

Select a tool by the job

Start with Search Console when you need Google’s reported performance for your own site, broken down by country, query, or page. Add a rank tracker when you need recurring checks on a defined set of keywords, particularly when you need controlled device or location settings. Compare services on the options that affect your task rather than assuming every tracker supports the same geographic precision, search engines, history, or exports. Commercial plans and limits can change, so verify a provider’s current terms before choosing one.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. Its API is for capturing pages, not tracking search rankings, so it does not replace Search Console or a rank tracker. If your workflow also needs screenshots of pages, one GET request returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of a page:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers say whether a page was clean and whether it was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
