If the Classic Editor’s Add Media button is unresponsive, first identify exactly where the workflow fails, then use browser errors and controlled site changes to narrow down the cause. The problem can involve JavaScript, a plugin, theme or custom admin code, caching, or the server; the symptom alone does not identify a universal fix. In the block editor, media controls look different, so this guide focuses on the Classic Editor.
Find the step that fails
In the Classic Editor, the usual process is to place the cursor where the image should go, click Add Media, choose Upload Files or Media Library, select an item, then click Insert into post or the corresponding page action. Compare what happens on your site with this workflow to locate the failure. WordPress’ image-insertion instructions describe the steps.
- The button does not open the picker: the click or the script that opens the media modal may be failing.
- The picker opens, but an upload button or other control is missing: determine whether the problem is limited to the upload interface or appeared after a plugin or other change.
- The media library hangs: note whether it hangs while loading, uploading, or selecting an item.
- You can select an item, but click Insert into post and nothing happens: inspect the insertion request and browser console rather than treating this as the same failure as a button that will not open.
- The picker looks visually broken: consider layout or styling interference as well as a failed script.
Keep track of the exact action and result. That gives you a useful reproduction instead of the broader report “Add Media button not working.”
Check the browser before changing WordPress settings
WordPress’ JavaScript troubleshooting guide, last updated September 23, 2026, says that broken menus, immovable metaboxes, and buttons that do not work—including Add Media—may be caused by JavaScript errors or conflicts. That is a diagnostic possibility, not proof that a particular script is at fault.

- Try the same action in another browser. If it works there, the difference helps narrow the investigation to browser-specific behavior, such as an extension or browser configuration; it does not by itself establish a fix.
- In the affected browser, open Developer Tools and select the Console tab. Reload the editor if needed, then repeat the exact action that fails.
- Copy the full error and stack trace, including the filename and line number. Record the browser and what you clicked immediately before the error appeared.
- If needed, follow WordPress’ guide to enable
SCRIPT_DEBUG, then repeat the test and note whether behavior or the error changes. Avoid changing several settings at once, so you can tell which change affected the result.
A complete error and reproduction context are more useful to a plugin author or support team than “it doesn’t work.”
Isolate plugins, theme, and custom admin code
If the problem began after an update, or the console points toward a script, compare behavior with site customizations removed. Use a staging copy where possible; disabling plugins or switching themes on a live site can affect visitors and site features.

- On staging, temporarily deactivate plugins and test the same Add Media action.
- If it works, reactivate plugins one at a time, testing after each activation, to identify whether behavior changes with a particular plugin.
- If the issue remains, compare with a default WordPress theme. A support response suggested this test in one case, but that report does not establish themes as a general cause.
- Review custom code that changes the dashboard, especially admin scripts and code that cleans up or modifies the page head or footer. One support case was resolved after custom head/footer cleanup code was found to interfere with the media picker’s generated code; this is an example, not a universal fix. If behavior changes when one plugin is disabled or a different theme is active, check that component’s current support information and release notes before deciding how to proceed. Do not leave unrelated plugins disabled or make a production change without understanding its effect.
Investigate a missing upload control after an update
If the media modal opens but shows a missing upload button, check whether the symptom began after a plugin update and consult that plugin’s current changelog and support forum. A support thread for one plugin reported a missing upload control and said its vendor fixed the issue in version 4.2. That is a plugin-specific, time-sensitive report—not a recommendation for everyone to install or downgrade to that version. See the plugin support report.

Rule out caching when it fits the evidence
If you use browser, site, or CDN caching, clear the relevant caches and test again. If possible, temporarily rule out caching behavior as part of a controlled comparison. A support discussion about a media hang and an admin-ajax.php 500 response after a PHP upgrade also suggested checking cache, theme, and plugins; it did not establish that PHP 8.3 itself was incompatible or identify a definitive cause. Use Network evidence to investigate admin-ajax.php errors
If the browser’s Console or Network panel shows an admin-ajax.php request returning 403 or 500, record the request, response, and timestamp while reproducing the failure. A 403 indicates access was denied; a 500 indicates a server error. Neither status identifies which component caused it.

For example, a migration-related support report suggested asking the host to check permissions, ModSecurity or other security tooling, and server logs. A separate Classic Editor insertion report showed a 403 and suggested comparing with a default theme. These are case-specific leads, not proof of a general cause. Contact your hosting provider with the timestamp and request details, and ask them to inspect the matching server logs and relevant permissions, security rules, and caching or CDN behavior. Do not permanently disable security protections or edit production server configuration based on the status code alone.

What to include when you ask for help
- The editor you are using and the precise failing step.
- Browser name and whether the same action behaves differently in another browser.
- The full Console error and stack trace, with filename and line number, if present.
- Whether enabling
SCRIPT_DEBUGchanged the behavior or error. - Any relevant plugin, theme, custom-code, or caching comparison you performed, and what changed.
- For a server response, the
admin-ajax.phprequest, status code, and timestamp.
WordPress’ JavaScript guide recommends including the browser, the full error, whether SCRIPT_DEBUG changed behavior, and the triggering context when reporting a problem.
