The most reliable way to keep them out is to seal likely entry points before they start seeking shelter in late summer and fall. Here’s why they come inside, what to check, and how to handle any you find.
Why are stink bugs moving into your house?
Brown marmorated stink bugs (BMSB) are outdoor plant-feeding insects. As temperatures cool in late summer and fall, adults look for protected places to overwinter. A building offers narrow spaces out of the weather, so bugs may gather on sunny exterior walls before slipping through gaps around windows, doors, siding, pipes, vents, or other openings. University of Maryland Extension and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describe this as shelter-seeking behavior.
Indoor BMSB sightings are generally a nuisance, not evidence that the insects are damaging the structure or reproducing in the home. They may become visible in living spaces during winter when warmth brings them out of protected hiding places. “Stink bug” can refer to other insects, however, so do not assume every brown bug indoors is BMSB; a local extension service can help identify look-alikes.
How to keep stink bugs from getting inside
Physical exclusion—closing the routes bugs use to enter—is the main household prevention strategy in guidance from the EPA and university extension services. Inspect the exterior before the fall congregation begins, and match the repair to the opening.

Use caulk, screens, weather stripping, and sweeps as repairs to the opening itself; none is a substitute for checking the other likely gaps. Take care not to block required ventilation or create a fire or appliance-safety hazard when screening vents or chimney openings.
When should you seal the openings?
Do the inspection and repairs before fall entry pressure, rather than waiting until bugs are already overwintering indoors. NC State Extension advises against sealing a home in fall, winter, or early spring if insects may be trapped inside. Its regional guidance is to allow spring emergence, then seal before the late-August return attempt. Seasonal timing can differ by location, so follow local extension advice where the climate or BMSB activity differs.

What to do if stink bugs are already inside
Capture or remove them without crushing them: crushed BMSB can release an unpleasant odor. Options described by extension services include catching an individual in a jar or bottle, or using soapy water where appropriate. NC State Extension also describes freezing a captured bug in its container or drowning it in soapy water.
Vacuuming or sweeping can be practical for several bugs, but the machine or collection container may retain odor. If you use a vacuum, a dedicated hand vacuum or a collection container that can be emptied and cleaned separately may reduce the nuisance. NC State cautions that bugs released outdoors can return indoors, so live release is not a dependable universal solution.

Do sprays, foggers, or traps solve the problem?
Indoor sprays and foggers do not prevent new bugs from entering, and may not reach insects hidden in wall voids or attics. Because exclusion addresses the entry routes directly, pesticide use indoors is not the default fix for a few BMSB. Follow product labels and local guidance if considering any pesticide.
Traps may reduce numbers in some circumstances, but they are not complete control and do not replace sealing openings. For unusually large exterior congregations or a property with openings that are difficult to seal, an exterior treatment may be an option to discuss with a locally licensed pest-control professional. Maryland Extension and Penn State Extension describe limits and considerations for such treatments; this is a conditional step, not the first response to an indoor sighting.
