Cloudflare’s Data Platform became generally available as Basin on October 1, 2026. The rebrand brings Pipelines, Catalog, and SQL under one name, with a design centered on storing analytics data in Cloudflare R2 and using Apache Iceberg tables. Cloudflare’s “fewer fees” pitch chiefly concerns R2’s lack of egress charges—not a promise that every Basin workload costs less.
What is Cloudflare Basin?
Basin is Cloudflare’s serverless analytics platform, replacing the Cloudflare Data Platform name. Its three parts cover event ingestion and transformation, Iceberg table management, and SQL queries. Cloudflare says the platform is built around R2 object storage and the open Apache Iceberg table format. Cloudflare’s launch announcement describes the rebrand and its intended role.
| Component | What it does |
|---|---|
| Basin Pipelines | Receives events, applies SQL transformations, and writes data to R2 as Iceberg tables or JSON and Parquet files. |
| Basin Catalog | Manages Iceberg metadata and table maintenance, including compaction, snapshot expiration, and manifest optimization. |
| Basin SQL | Provides a serverless distributed SQL engine for querying Iceberg tables in Basin Catalog. |
The launch materials describe SQL support for aggregates, joins, subqueries, and window functions, along with schema discovery and more than 190 data functions. These are Cloudflare’s published product capabilities, not an independent assessment of query performance.
How does data move through Basin?
The documented flow starts with events and ends with queryable data in R2. Pipelines can accept events through Workers bindings, HTTP endpoints, or Cloudflare Logpush. It can apply SQL transformations and write the result in an Iceberg or file format.

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
- Ingest: Send events to Pipelines using a Workers binding, an HTTP endpoint, or Logpush.
- Transform and write: Apply SQL transformations and write output to R2 as Iceberg tables, JSON, or Parquet.
- Catalog: Use Basin Catalog to manage Iceberg metadata and automate table maintenance.
- Query: Query Catalog’s Iceberg tables with Basin SQL or, according to Cloudflare, compatible tools such as PyIceberg, DuckDB, Snowflake, and Apache Spark. Cloudflare’s changelog lists these product details.
Cloudflare says existing Cloudflare Pipelines, R2 Data Catalog, and R2 SQL resources and configurations are expected to keep working as the names are deprecated over time. The changelog gives npx wrangler basin pipelines setup as a setup command.
What does “fewer fees” mean?
The clearest part of the claim is egress: Cloudflare says R2 does not charge egress fees for transferring data out of R2. Iceberg compatibility is intended to let teams access data with multiple engines, rather than locking queries to one proprietary format or service. That does not establish that a complete analytics workload will always cost less.

Cloudflare’s October 1, 2026 changelog published the following Pipelines rates. At that time, it also said Pipelines billing was not yet enabled and that it would give at least 30 days’ notice before beginning to charge. These are announced rates and launch-era billing status, not confirmation of billing status after October 1.
| Pipelines pricing dimension | Cloudflare-published rate | Included monthly amount |
|---|---|---|
| Streams / ingress | Free | Workers Free: 1 GB per month per pricing dimension; Workers Paid: 50 GB per month per pricing dimension. |
| Stateless SQL transformations | $0.04 per GB | Workers Free: 1 GB per month; Workers Paid: 50 GB per month. |
| JSON sinks | $0.03 per GB | Workers Free: 1 GB per month; Workers Paid: 50 GB per month. |
| Parquet or Iceberg sinks | $0.06 per GB | Workers Free: 1 GB per month; Workers Paid: 50 GB per month. |
Cloudflare’s changelog states that the included amounts apply per pricing dimension. R2 storage and operations charges still apply to stored data, and Iceberg tables may also incur Data Catalog charges. Query compute and costs from other providers can add to the total. Cloudflare’s R2 pricing page covers R2 charges; check current pricing and billing status before estimating a workload.

A meaningful cost comparison should account for ingest, transformations, output format, R2 storage and operations, catalog maintenance, query compute, and any cross-cloud transfer. Egress savings alone cannot show whether Basin is cheaper end to end.
What should teams compare before choosing Basin?
- Format and engine portability: Check whether the team’s preferred query engines support the Iceberg tables and workflows it needs. Cloudflare identifies PyIceberg, DuckDB, Snowflake, and Spark as compatible options; that list does not establish that every feature behaves identically across them.
- End-to-end cost: Model each workload’s ingestion volume, transformation and sink choices, storage, catalog maintenance, query compute, and transfer charges—not just egress.
- Operations: Basin is marketed as serverless and managed, with automated Catalog maintenance. The launch materials do not provide an independent operational comparison against other platforms.
- Workload fit: The documented pattern is event or log ingestion, SQL transformation, file or Iceberg output, and querying. Validate that the product’s limits, SQL capabilities, and latency meet the needs of the actual workload.
Cloudflare’s October 1 changelog lists a maximum ingestion rate of 1 GB/s per stream, up from 5 MB/s. That is a vendor-published product limit, not a measured throughput result. The changelog is the source for this launch-era limit.

What is the “Basin” name—and is it bland?
“Bland” is a matter of taste, not a product fact. Cloudflare says it chose Basin to connect the three products under one brand and evoke a place where data from different sources comes together: Pipelines brings data in, Catalog manages it, and SQL makes it queryable. The naming logic is clear, even if the name itself may strike some readers as generic.
Cloudflare CTO Dane Knecht framed the goal as reducing infrastructure work for developers: “Developers shouldn’t need to become data infrastructure operators just to answer questions from their own data.” That is the company’s rationale for the managed approach, not independent proof that Basin removes operational work in every deployment.

What has Cloudflare demonstrated at launch?
Cloudflare says its teams used the beta for billing metrics and infrastructure telemetry, and its launch materials cite real-time e-commerce analytics as a use case. Those are company-reported examples. The launch sources do not provide independent benchmarks for performance, reliability, or comparative total cost, so claims of savings or speed should be treated as vendor statements rather than independently verified results.
