Top-freezer refrigerators tend to use the least energy among the common top-freezer, bottom-freezer and side-by-side layouts, according to ENERGY STAR’s refrigerator buying guidance. Bottom-freezer and side-by-side models are less favorable in that general comparison, but official guidance does not establish which of those two uses less energy overall. Treat this as a starting point, not a ranking of every individual model: capacity, features and design matter, so compare the annual energy-use figures on similarly sized refrigerators.

How the refrigerator types rank for efficiency

This comparison is about common household refrigerator-freezer layouts, not compact refrigerators, freezerless models, wine coolers or built-ins. ENERGY STAR’s guidance offers a clear first place but not a definitive order for the remaining layouts:

  1. Top-freezer: Tends to use the least energy among the three layouts.
  2. Bottom-freezer: Not ranked separately against side-by-side models by ENERGY STAR.
  3. Side-by-side: Also less favorable than top-freezer models in ENERGY STAR’s general comparison; its relative position against bottom-freezer models is not established.

ENERGY STAR describes French-door refrigerators as a bottom-freezer configuration for this comparison. The sources do not provide a separate measured efficiency rank for French-door models. Their multiple doors may affect air leakage, but that alone does not establish how a particular French-door refrigerator compares with another model.

Why a layout ranking cannot predict a specific refrigerator’s energy use

The ranking describes a tendency across types, not a guarantee that one individual appliance will beat another. A larger refrigerator generally uses more energy, and features and construction can change a model’s annual consumption. Use the type ranking to narrow your search, then compare the actual products.

  • FLEXIBLE CONFIGURATION: The adjustable/removable shelves offer flexibility to customize the interior layout according to your needs, accommodating items of various sizes with ease. A reversible door also allows for flexible opening to best suit your space
  • Capacity: ENERGY STAR says its most energy-efficient models are typically 16–20 cubic feet. That is a general range, not an optimum for every household; buying more storage than you need can raise energy use.
  • Door count and seals: ENERGY STAR advises that fewer doors can reduce air leakage. Check that the seals close airtight; replace seals that do not.
  • Ice service: Automatic icemakers and through-door ice are relevant configuration differences when comparing models.
  • Defrost design: Defrost configuration is another factor reflected in federal efficiency classifications.

Do not assume that a low annual-kWh figure on a small compact refrigerator means it is more efficient per unit of storage. Compare models with similar capacity and features; the sources do not establish a per-cubic-foot ranking by refrigerator type.

How to compare two refrigerator models

  1. Match the product category and approximate capacity. Compare standard-size models with standard-size models, and compact models with compact models. Keep usable storage needs in view.
  2. Compare annual energy use in kWh. For similarly sized models, use the annual consumption figure on the product’s energy label rather than inferring efficiency from the door layout alone.
  3. Account for features. Note the number of doors, automatic icemaker or through-door ice, and defrost method. These differences can help explain why two similar-looking refrigerators have different energy figures.
  4. Estimate operating cost at your electricity rate. Multiply annual kWh by your local price per kWh for an approximate annual energy cost. This is an estimate; actual consumption and bills depend on use and conditions.
  5. Check certification separately from layout. ENERGY STAR certification signals that a model meets the applicable criteria for its product class; it does not mean every certified refrigerator uses the same amount of energy.

What ENERGY STAR certification and Most Efficient mean

ENERGY STAR certification and ENERGY STAR Most Efficient recognition are not interchangeable. The certification criteria vary by product class. ENERGY STAR’s key criteria page says its refrigerator and refrigerator-freezer categories must use at least 10% less measured energy than federal minimum standards under the criteria that changed August 5, 2021. See ENERGY STAR’s key product criteria for the applicable classes.

  • Removable Shelves & Crisper Drawer: Detachable glass shelves, give you more space to store your food, which can keep the inside not in random. 2L bottle rack allows you to put daily milk and drinks bottles.

Most Efficient is an additional recognition with its own model-year criteria. Under the 2025 criteria, released in September 2024, standard-size refrigerator-freezers must use no more than 637 kWh per year. Non-top-freezer configurations must also be at least 27% more efficient than federal requirements. Top-freezer models are exempt from that additional relative-efficiency test and may qualify at or below the annual cap if they are ENERGY STAR certified. These thresholds apply to the specified recognition and product class; they are not a substitute for comparing the annual consumption of models you are considering.

When an efficiency premium may pay back

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) offers an illustrative lifecycle-cost comparison, not a forecast of a household’s bill. In guidance updated in December 2023, FEMP says an ENERGY STAR residential refrigerator saves money if its purchase price is no more than $45 above a less-efficient comparison model, in 2022 dollars. The example assumes federal-facility electricity at $0.099 per kWh and a 16.2-year product life; a household’s electricity price and usage may differ.

These are figures for an 18.1-cubic-foot automatic-defrost top-freezer refrigerator based on December 2023 ENERGY STAR data, not universal values for those categories. FEMP also lists $46 in energy-cost savings for its best-available comparison under the same published assumptions. Details are in FEMP’s residential refrigerator purchasing guidance.

Which refrigerator should an efficiency-focused buyer start with?

Start with top-freezer models, then compare annual kWh among refrigerators that meet your capacity needs. If a bottom-freezer, French-door or side-by-side model suits your kitchen better, do not rule it out based on layout alone: check its labeled energy use, door and ice features, and certification status against comparably sized alternatives. The most useful choice is the model with the energy use and storage you need, not simply the layout with the best general tendency.
