FFmpeg sends your video to MediaMTX, and MediaMTX forwards it to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, get the ingest URL and stream key for your active stream; configure the matching MediaMTX path to forward there over RTMPS. Keep both audio and video tracks in the forwarded feed: MediaMTX documentation warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams.

How the stream gets from FFmpeg to YouTube

This setup has two separate connections:

  1. Publisher to MediaMTX: FFmpeg sends its output to a MediaMTX RTMP listener and path on a host you control.
  2. MediaMTX to YouTube: MediaMTX forwards that path to the current YouTube ingest URL and stream key for your live stream.

Separating the legs makes it easier to locate a failure: first establish that MediaMTX receives the FFmpeg feed, then check whether the forwarded feed reaches YouTube.

Prepare YouTube Studio

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open the Stream tab.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream you intend to use. YouTube describes the key as the credential the encoder uses to send its feed.
  3. Keep the key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to that stream. If it is exposed or stops working, reset it in YouTube Studio and update MediaMTX’s forwarding destination.

Use the URL currently displayed in Studio. MediaMTX’s documentation gives a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2 as an example host from the time that page was updated, not as a guaranteed current endpoint.

Configure MediaMTX to forward the stream

Create or select a MediaMTX path, such as mypath, and configure that path to forward to YouTube. The destination follows this pattern:

rtmps://<current-youtube-ingest-host>/<path>#<stream-key>

Use the current RTMPS URL and key from YouTube Studio, replacing each placeholder with its corresponding value. The # separates the stream key from the ingest URL. Put the destination in the forward setting for the matching MediaMTX path; the path name must match the one FFmpeg publishes to.

Prefer RTMPS to encrypt the connection between MediaMTX and YouTube. Treat the stream key as a secret: do not post it in screenshots, public configuration files, or logs. MediaMTX’s documentation mentions a certificate fingerprint caveat based on its check at the time of that documentation update. Do not copy an old certificate exception without verifying the current endpoint and your MediaMTX version.

Publish from FFmpeg to MediaMTX

For a local MediaMTX listener and a file named file.mp4, the documented RTMP publishing pattern is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace file.mp4 with the input file and localhost with the MediaMTX host if it is on another machine. Replace mystream with the path name configured in MediaMTX. The example loops the file indefinitely and copies its existing audio and video codecs rather than re-encoding them.

  • Use -re for a file input that should be read at its native playback rate. It is not a general requirement for every type of input.
  • -c copy works only when the source codecs are suitable for the destination workflow. If they are not, copying does not convert them; use an appropriate encoding workflow instead.
  • Preserve both an audio track and a video track through the MediaMTX path, even if the intended program sounds silent. A video-only forwarded stream can be silently rejected by YouTube.

The example sends to MediaMTX over RTMP on port 1935; the separate MediaMTX forwarding connection to YouTube should use the current RTMPS destination. Confirm the listener, port, host, and path against your own MediaMTX configuration.

Choose encoder settings that YouTube can ingest

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Use RTMPS where supported for encrypted transport.

The following bitrate figures are YouTube recommendations from its encoder guidance, not performance measurements for a particular setup. The guidance page did not show a publication date in the retrieved result.

Video codec Resolution and frame rate Recommended bitrate Minimum bitrate
H.264 1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 5 Mbps
H.264 720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps Not stated in the cited guidance
AV1 or H.265 720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps Not stated in the cited guidance

Choose a mode your source can produce and your upload connection can sustain. Higher resolution and frame rate need more upload capacity. A bitrate recommendation is not a guarantee of stable ingest: leave room for connection variation, test with representative content, and watch YouTube’s stream health feedback.

Test the complete path before relying on it

  1. Start the FFmpeg publisher and confirm MediaMTX is receiving the expected path.
  2. Check that the matching MediaMTX path is forwarding to the current YouTube RTMPS URL with the correct key.
  3. In YouTube Studio, check for the incoming stream preview and stream health messages.
  4. Test with representative video motion and audio, rather than relying only on a static or silent sample.
  5. If the setup will run for an extended period, observe it long enough to catch interruptions or ingest warnings before treating it as ready.

Troubleshoot common failures

YouTube shows no preview or rejects the feed

Check that the stream arriving at YouTube contains both audio and video tracks. MediaMTX’s YouTube guidance says video-only streams are silently rejected. Verify the tracks at the MediaMTX input and ensure they remain present in the forwarded path.

MediaMTX receives FFmpeg, but YouTube does not

Check the two legs independently. First confirm FFmpeg is publishing to the intended MediaMTX host, listener, and path. Then confirm that the matching path’s forwarding destination uses the current YouTube ingest URL and the key for the active Studio stream.

The stream key no longer works or may have leaked

Reset the key in YouTube Studio, then replace the old key in MediaMTX’s forwarding destination. Also remove exposed copies where possible; do not continue using a key that may be compromised.

Quality is poor or ingest is unstable

Check whether the selected bitrate fits the upload connection’s real capacity, and verify the codec, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval. Run a representative test and use YouTube’s stream health messages to identify ingest problems.

RTMPS fails with a TLS or certificate error

Verify the current YouTube endpoint and the behavior of your installed MediaMTX version. The certificate note in MediaMTX’s example reflects a check made at the time that page was updated; do not disable validation or copy an old fingerprint exception without current verification.
