MediaMTX can forward a live audio-and-video feed to YouTube over RTMPS, but it is a media server and proxy—not a complete 24/7 playout or reliability system. It is a good fit when you need to bridge protocols, route streams, or record locally and are prepared to configure and monitor the rest of the pipeline. If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube without leaving a computer running, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is a more direct option.
This is a documentation-based assessment, not a hands-on test: no uptime or failure-recovery measurements are available here. The practical verdict depends on whether you need MediaMTX’s routing capabilities and can operate the surrounding infrastructure.
What MediaMTX does—and what it does not
MediaMTX describes itself as a ready-to-use, zero-dependency live media server and proxy. It accepts and serves streams over protocols including RTSP, RTMP, HLS, WebRTC, SRT, MPEG-TS, RTP, and Media-over-QUIC, and can convert between protocols or forward a stream to another server. It also documents recording to disk in fMP4 or MPEG-TS, playback, authentication, a control API, Prometheus-compatible metrics, hot-reloaded configuration, and a single-executable deployment for Linux, Windows, and macOS. MediaMTX’s project documentation describes these as server capabilities; they are building blocks, not an end-to-end broadcast guarantee.
In particular, MediaMTX is not established by its documentation as an encoder, a complete scheduled-video playout system, or an automatic failover service. A continuous YouTube channel still depends on a source that supplies content, a host and network that stay available, correctly configured credentials, and an operations plan. If the incoming feed needs transcoding or filtering, MediaMTX’s forwarding guide points to an FFmpeg-based workflow.

Can MediaMTX send a stream to YouTube?
Yes. MediaMTX documents forwarding a stream to YouTube using RTMPS. The forwarded feed must contain both audio and video: the guide warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams. Treat MediaMTX as the router in this arrangement, not as a tool that will turn any arbitrary input into a compliant YouTube encoder output. For the example and configuration details, see the MediaMTX forwarding documentation.
Copy the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room when you configure the destination. The URL shown in a documentation example may no longer be current; use YouTube’s current value rather than hard-coding an endpoint from a guide.
Configure the feed for YouTube
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Its encoder guidance also specifies supported video codecs, audio formats, frame-rate and keyframe targets. Choose a quality your upload connection can sustain, test with representative motion and audio, and watch YouTube’s stream-health feedback while the feed is running. The figures below are from YouTube Help; the retrieved page does not state a publication year.

| Output setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265, or AV1 |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps |
| Rate control | Constant bitrate (CBR) |
| Keyframe interval | Recommended: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 |
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | Recommended bitrate: 6–17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | Recommended bitrate: 5–14 Mbps |
These bitrate ranges apply to the named H.264 outputs; other codec and resolution combinations have their own recommendations in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. Do not select the top of a range unless the upload link can sustain it with headroom. A feed that intermittently falls behind or loses packets is less useful than a stable lower-bitrate output.
- Get the current destination details. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast. Enter them in MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding destination as described in its forwarding guide.
- Confirm the input is complete. Make sure the stream reaching MediaMTX contains both audio and video tracks. If it does not, fix or encode the source before relying on YouTube forwarding.
- Match the encoder output to YouTube’s guidance. Use RTMPS, a supported codec, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval where your encoder allows it. Select the bitrate for the actual resolution and frame rate rather than copying a setting for a different output.
- Start a test and inspect YouTube’s preview. Check picture, sound, sync, and stream health before treating the route as ready for a continuous broadcast. Test representative movement and audio, not just a static opening frame.
- Monitor the complete chain. Watch the source, MediaMTX host and network, forwarding destination, and YouTube stream-health feedback. A green-looking configuration file does not prove that the full path will recover from a failure.
If the input requires transcoding or filtering, use the FFmpeg workflow referenced by the MediaMTX forwarding documentation. Do not assume MediaMTX performs that conversion automatically.
Is MediaMTX reliable enough for 24/7 use?
Its documented features can help build a robust pipeline: MediaMTX can keep a path available when a publisher is offline, record streams, expose metrics, authenticate publishers, and forward traffic. But none of those features by itself establishes that a particular installation will stay online continuously. The reviewed documentation provides no measured uptime, real-world failure test, or guarantee of automatic source or YouTube-ingest failover.

For a 24/7 deployment, decide in advance what should happen when the source stops, the host restarts, the network drops, or YouTube disconnects. Configure restart and recovery behavior where needed, and test it rather than relying on the presence of a server feature name. Protect the server’s publishing path and keep the YouTube key out of public configuration, logs, and shared screenshots.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYouTube’s encoder workflow is to enter the current URL and key, start sending the feed, check the preview, and go live. If the key is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live-streaming help for the current workflow.
Plan a separate archive for a continuous broadcast
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. That makes YouTube’s automatic archive an unsafe sole copy for a 24/7 channel. If retaining the full broadcast matters, arrange an independent recording and verify that it is actually being written and retained.

MediaMTX documents recording to local disk in fMP4 or MPEG-TS, but capacity, retention, backup, and recovery are the operator’s responsibility. Estimate storage from the actual bitrate and recording duration, and make sure the host has enough space before starting a long-running recording. YouTube’s archive caveat is documented in YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Use RTMPS for YouTube ingest as recommended by YouTube, and restrict who can publish to the MediaMTX path. MediaMTX documents internal-user authentication, an external HTTP authentication server, and JWT authentication; choose an approach appropriate to how the server is exposed. Protect the YouTube stream key as a credential, and reset it if exposed. Details on MediaMTX authentication and supported options are in its documentation.

Who should use MediaMTX for a YouTube channel?
MediaMTX is a sensible candidate when a technical operator needs to bridge protocols, route a feed, publish to more than one compatible destination, expose metrics, or create a locally recorded stream path. It is less suitable as a turnkey answer for someone who expects uploaded videos to loop continuously without managing a host, encoder, network, recovery, and archive.
Before choosing it, answer these operational questions:
- Does the source and destination use different protocols that need bridging?
- Does the source already meet YouTube’s audio, video, codec, bitrate, and keyframe requirements, or will FFmpeg need to transcode or filter it?
- Who can publish to the MediaMTX path, and how will the YouTube key be protected?
- Do you need a local recording independent of YouTube’s archive, especially for a broadcast longer than 12 hours?
- Have restart, recovery, failover, and monitoring behavior been configured and tested on the actual deployment?
- Do you need browser playback from MediaMTX, and can you accept the latency/connectivity trade-off between HLS and WebRTC?
The available sources do not establish comparative benchmark results or measured uptime against other media servers, so a broader performance ranking would not be justified.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to loop uploaded videos on YouTube rather than build and operate a streaming pipeline, StreamNeo is the simpler alternative to try first: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded-video playback, not camera broadcasting. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
