For a playlist encoder sending a continuous stream to YouTube, choose RTMPS by default when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, while HLS ingest involves HTTPS uploads of media playlists and segments and usually has higher latency. SRS can generate HLS for viewers, but that is not the same as sending an HLS stream into YouTube.

First decide which direction the video is traveling

“HLS from SRS” can describe two different workflows:

  • YouTube ingest: Your encoder sends a live feed to YouTube. The choice between RTMPS and HLS determines how that feed reaches YouTube.
  • HLS delivery from SRS: A source stream reaches SRS, which creates an HLS playlist and media segments for viewers to play. This is a delivery workflow, not YouTube ingest.

An SRS-generated .m3u8 for viewers is not automatically a valid YouTube HLS ingest feed. YouTube requires the encoder to upload a compliant playlist and segments over HTTPS. SRS HLS documentation and YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide describe these distinct paths.

RTMPS vs. HLS ingest

Factor RTMPS/RTMP to YouTube HLS to YouTube
Best fit Default for a continuous encoder-to-YouTube stream when supported; YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use when an HLS-specific codec or quality need warrants the extra ingest requirements.
Latency RTMP is a common ingest and production protocol in SRS documentation. YouTube says HLS ingest usually has higher latency than RTMP- or WebRTC-based ingest because it is segment-based.
Setup Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the encoder. Upload a rolling media playlist and M2TS segments over HTTPS, meeting YouTube’s playlist and segment rules.
Format path YouTube’s encoder recommendations include H.264, HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval. Requires muxed M2TS audio/video, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and a rolling media playlist. Do not send a master playlist with variants.
Operational tradeoff Familiar encoder workflow; monitor connection and stream health. Shorter segments can reduce latency but may raise rebuffering risk and reduce encoding efficiency.

These protocol differences matter independently of whether your content is a playlist. The playlist source must still produce a consistent feed, and the connection must be supervised if you want it to recover from interruptions.

Why RTMPS is the usual choice for a 24/7 playlist

YouTube’s standard encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key, and YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. That is a recommendation, not a claim that plain RTMP is impossible. For an encoder that supports RTMPS, it is the straightforward default; HLS is a specialized alternative when its format path is needed.

HLS has more moving parts: an HTTPS upload workflow, M2TS segments, a rolling media playlist, sequence handling, and limits on outstanding segments. YouTube recommends media segments of one to four seconds and requires that they not exceed five seconds. A media playlist may contain no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube supports up to 60 fps for HLS ingest. These are YouTube HLS ingest requirements and recommendations, not SRS viewer-delivery settings. See YouTube’s current HLS ingestion guide.

Set up a continuous playlist stream with an encoder

  1. Prepare the feed. Make the playlist produce continuous audio and video with consistent input formats and timestamps. Arrange local process supervision and reconnection as an operational choice; the protocol alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
  2. Create the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream using the encoder workflow. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Keep the key private.
  3. Configure the encoder. Select RTMPS if available, then enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder settings guide recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Follow YouTube’s current recommendations for your chosen resolution and frame rate; use CBR as recommended. No single bitrate is suitable for every resolution, frame rate, and encoder, so use the current table on YouTube’s encoder settings page.
  4. Start the feed and verify it. Start sending from the encoder and check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room, completing the go-live flow where applicable. Resolve warnings before relying on the stream.
  5. Test the actual playlist. YouTube advises testing beforehand with audio and motion similar to the live content. Watch for format changes, timestamp discontinuities, connection drops, and stream-health warnings during operation.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive guidance does not establish that one stream is guaranteed to remain live indefinitely or that a single 24-hour-or-longer broadcast will be uninterrupted. Plan your stream lifecycle and recovery around the limits of your encoder and YouTube’s current workflow. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

If you need YouTube HLS ingest

Choose HLS only when its requirements fit your encoder and stream. The encoder must upload HLS ingest media itself; configuring SRS to produce HLS for viewers does not satisfy this requirement by itself.

  • Package audio and video together in M2TS segments.
  • Use H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio, with a closed GOP.
  • Upload a rolling media playlist and segments over HTTPS; do not use a master playlist for YouTube ingest.
  • Keep media segments within YouTube’s limits: one to four seconds is recommended, and five seconds is the maximum.
  • Keep the playlist within the limit of five outstanding segments and follow the sequence and upload rules in YouTube’s HLS guide.

YouTube says HLS ingest usually has higher latency than RTMP- or WebRTC-based ingest. Smaller segments may reduce latency, but can increase rebuffering and reduce encoding efficiency. Up to 60 fps is supported for this YouTube HLS ingest path.

Where SRS fits—and where it does not

SRS documentation covers generating HLS from an incoming source stream, including configuration such as hls_fragment and hls_window. Its example uses two-second fragments and a ten-second window. SRS’s tuning guidance describes about six to eight seconds as achievable with reduced GOP, fragment, and window settings, while warning that too little buffering can cause playback failures. Those are SRS HLS delivery guidance—not a guarantee of YouTube ingest latency or end-to-end viewer latency. Consult the SRS v8 HLS documentation for the relevant SRS workflow.

SRS documents fMP4 support in newer releases and says it does not currently support HLS adaptive-bitrate generation on the documented page. That does not change YouTube’s ingest requirements: YouTube transcodes for viewer resolutions, and its HLS ingest guide calls for sending one encoded stream at the highest desired resolution rather than a master playlist with variants. Do not assume an SRS output playlist or segment format is directly compatible with YouTube HLS ingest.

You do not need a dedicated encoder appliance based on the available SRS documentation. The SRS project README shows an FFmpeg publishing workflow and lists Linux and macOS support, so suitable existing hardware can host the software. A dedicated always-on machine or a server is an option for local operations, not a demonstrated requirement.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder is using the server URL and stream key for the intended live stream, that the key was copied correctly, and that the encoder is actually sending. Check the Live Control Room preview and warnings.
  • HLS uploads are rejected or fail to play: Verify HTTPS uploads, muxed M2TS segments, supported codecs, a closed GOP, rolling media-playlist behavior, segment duration, and the outstanding-segment limit against YouTube’s HLS ingest specification.
  • Viewers experience buffering on an SRS HLS output: Review fragment, window, and GOP settings together. SRS warns that reducing buffering too far can cause playback failures; its example and tuning guidance concern SRS delivery, not YouTube ingest.
  • The playlist stalls or jumps: Check whether the source process stopped, timestamps or input formats changed between files, or the encoder failed to reconnect. Add process supervision and monitor stream health; a protocol selection alone does not provide playlist continuity.
  • The broadcast ends or is not archived as expected: Do not treat YouTube’s automatic archive statement for streams under 12 hours as a guarantee for longer uninterrupted broadcasts. Check the current stream setup and archive behavior in YouTube’s encoder instructions.
