To secure MediaMTX while forwarding a stream from a VPS to YouTube Live, use the documented RTMPS output, protect the YouTube stream key, require narrowly scoped authentication for MediaMTX clients, keep the Control API private, and validate both the binary and configuration before deployment. This guide covers forwarding an incoming MediaMTX stream to YouTube—not pulling a YouTube watch-page stream through MediaMTX, a workflow the cited documentation does not establish.
Understand which stream direction this setup covers
MediaMTX is a media server and proxy that can publish, read, proxy, record, play back, authenticate, and forward real-time audio and video. Its official YouTube workflow covers forwarding a stream arriving on a MediaMTX path to YouTube Live. The guide does not establish that MediaMTX can ingest an arbitrary YouTube watch-page URL and relay that stream elsewhere.
The forwarding guide documents an RTMPS destination pattern of rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2#streamKey. The hostname and certificate details in documentation can change; check YouTube’s current ingest settings and the live certificate before deployment rather than treating an example endpoint or fingerprint as permanent. MediaMTX documentation and YouTube sources describe RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, which protects the connection in transit.
Secure MediaMTX access on the VPS
Require authentication and limit permissions
MediaMTX supports an internal user database, an external HTTP authentication service, or JWT-based authentication. Assign each user only the actions and paths required for their job. Available permission actions include publish, read, playback, api, metrics, and pprof; permissions can be restricted to particular paths.

- Give a source that sends the stream only the publish permission it needs for its path.
- Give a reader only read or playback access as applicable; do not grant administrative actions by default.
- Keep API, metrics, and profiling access limited to trusted operators and networks.
If you use internal credentials, MediaMTX supports hashed credentials. Its guidance also recommends encryption or a VPN to protect credentials in transit. Choose an authentication method appropriate to your deployment, and do not assume path restrictions replace network-level controls.
Keep the Control API private
The MediaMTX Control API is accessible only from localhost by default. Retain that default unless remote access is genuinely needed. If you enable remote visibility, require authentication and restrict network reachability to trusted systems; avoid exposing an administrative interface to the public internet without a deliberate access-control design.

Treat the YouTube stream key as a secret
The forwarding destination contains the YouTube stream key, so the configuration that stores it is sensitive. Restrict access to the configuration file, VPS account, and any backup or deployment process that carries it. Do not place a real key in public examples, screenshots, or logs. If a key is exposed, replace it through YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the MediaMTX destination.
Configure and verify the YouTube forwarding leg
- Confirm the current YouTube ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the current stream settings to obtain the ingest URL and stream key. Verify the URL against the live YouTube configuration; do not rely on an old hostname or certificate fingerprint copied from an example.
- Set the MediaMTX forward destination. In the configuration for the path to be forwarded, use the documented RTMPS form, with the current server URL followed by
#and the stream key. The documentation example isrtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2#streamKey; replace the example values with the current ingest details and keep the real key private. - Verify TLS certificate behavior. RTMPS uses TLS/SSL, but the MediaMTX forwarding guide flags its certificate observation as potentially invalid at the time it was checked. Verify the current certificate and endpoint before relying on certificate pinning or a fingerprint. Do not copy a stale fingerprint blindly.
- Check both media tracks. YouTube’s documented MediaMTX workflow requires both a video track and an audio track. A video-only stream can be silently rejected, so test the exact incoming path with the intended audio and video before the scheduled broadcast.
- Test the full route. Publish to the intended MediaMTX path, confirm that MediaMTX forwards it, and check YouTube Live Control Room for the expected incoming preview and status before going live.
Validate the VPS deployment before startup
- Run MediaMTX’s documented
--validate-confoption against the configuration before starting the service, then resolve any reported errors. - Verify the downloaded release binary using its published SHA256 checksum or GitHub Attestations verification as described in MediaMTX’s security guide.
- Review filesystem permissions for the configuration and service account so unrelated VPS users cannot read the stream key or change forwarding and authentication settings.
- Confirm firewall and network rules expose only the MediaMTX services clients need; leave the Control API localhost-only unless a specific remote administration requirement exists.
Choose a viewer delivery method separately
The outbound RTMPS connection to YouTube is distinct from how viewers read a stream from MediaMTX. MediaMTX’s browser guide describes HLS as higher latency than WebRTC, while tending to encounter fewer connectivity problems. Choose HLS when broader, simpler connectivity matters more than low latency; choose WebRTC when lower latency is more important and the client network supports it.

Troubleshoot common forwarding and security problems
