Find the first point in your streaming chain where audio disappears: the source, encoder, Nginx RTMP relay, any FFmpeg processing, YouTube ingest, or playback. Fix that point, then test again while watching YouTube’s stream health. Video reaching YouTube does not prove an audio track reached it.

Trace the audio through the stream

Check each hop in order, using a local monitor, encoder status, FFmpeg logs, and YouTube’s Live Control Room as available. The goal is to identify the first point with no audio—not to assume Nginx or YouTube is responsible.

  1. Source: Confirm the audio plays locally and that the intended application or operating-system input is selected, unmuted, assigned to the right channel, and permitted to use the device.
  2. Encoder output: Check the encoder’s output status or a local monitoring copy. Produce sound and confirm an audio track is present and its level moves. If it is missing here, the relay cannot forward it.
  3. Nginx RTMP ingest and relay: Check that the active Nginx RTMP application receives the intended stream. Review the relevant application block and any exec, exec_push, or related forwarding configuration.
  4. FFmpeg processing, if used: Inspect the command and runtime logs to see whether audio is mapped, encoded, or dropped.
  5. YouTube ingest: Run a controlled test and inspect Live Control Room stream-health messages, or the Live Streaming API health data if you use it.
  6. Playback: If YouTube reports audio as present and healthy but playback is silent, compare another browser or device and check the player’s mute, volume, and selected audio track.

Keep notes on where audio is audible or visible as a track. Once it first disappears, concentrate on that boundary rather than changing unrelated settings.

Check the source and encoder first

Confirm the source is producing sound

  • Play the source locally and verify the expected sound is audible.
  • Check the selected input device or application, mute state, channel assignment, and device permissions.
  • If the source is silent, fix its selection or capture settings before changing the relay.

Confirm the encoder includes audio

Use the encoder’s output status or a local monitoring copy to confirm an audio track exists and responds when sound is produced. If the encoder output has no audio track, Nginx cannot create one by forwarding the stream.

Inspect Nginx RTMP and FFmpeg forwarding

For the active RTMP application, check that the relay reads the intended local RTMP stream and that its forwarding or FFmpeg command does not discard audio. The nginx-rtmp documentation includes FFmpeg examples with explicit audio and video encoding options; these are examples, not a diagnosis of your configuration. See the nginx-rtmp module directives documentation.

  • Look for -an, which disables audio output.
  • Confirm the command maps the intended audio stream when stream mapping is specified.
  • Verify the output enables an audio codec YouTube accepts.
  • For a pass-through relay, copy audio only if the incoming codec and container combination is compatible with the next hop. Otherwise, encode audio for the output.
  • If transcoding, check that the installed FFmpeg build supports the requested encoder and review runtime logs for mapping or audio-encoder errors.

Do not paste a generic FFmpeg command into production without adapting it to your input URL, stream layout, Nginx configuration, output format, and installed FFmpeg build.

Compare audio settings with YouTube’s guidance

YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS accepts AAC or MP3 audio. For ordinary stereo, its recommended settings are 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps bitrate. These are recommendations, not proof that any deviation will cause total silence. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026.

Audio format YouTube guidance for RTMP/RTMPS
Stereo AAC or MP3; recommended 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps
5.1 surround AAC only; recommended 48 kHz and 384 Kbps

Use the applicable row as a baseline when checking the encoder or FFmpeg output. YouTube states that 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC.

Check YouTube stream health and distinguish ingest from playback

Start a test stream and review the messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the real event, then monitoring stream health. If you use the API, the YouTube LiveStreams resource documents stream status, health status, and configuration issue categories, including audio bitrate issues. Follow the issue reported rather than guessing at a cause.

If stream health indicates that audio is missing or misconfigured, return to the earliest hop where the track disappears. If health indicates audio is present but one viewer hears silence, check another device or browser, then inspect player volume, mute, and audio-track selection. This playback check is diagnostic; it does not establish that a particular player bug is responsible.

Check RTMPS transport only if there are connection symptoms

An RTMPS endpoint or handshake problem is more likely to prevent or disrupt ingest than to explain an audio-only symptom. If your encoder reports transport or connection errors, verify the RTMPS endpoint, port, and SNI hostname against Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide, last updated September 14, 2026. The guide specifies port 443 and an SNI hostname requirement. Google recommends RTMPS for secure transmission.

No sound locally or in the encoder’s output Input selection, mute state, channel assignment, permissions, and encoder audio capture.
