If your SRS-to-YouTube stream keeps disconnecting, don’t start by changing bitrate. First find out whether the failure is in the encoder, the SRS server, YouTube’s ingest connection, the outbound network, or only a viewer’s playback. Then compare timestamps across the encoder and SRS logs, confirm YouTube’s current RTMP or RTMPS endpoint, and test the connection path.

Why does my YouTube stream keep disconnecting?

A stream can appear to disconnect for different reasons depending on where the failure occurs. The creator may lose the encoder-to-server connection, SRS may stop or reject a publish, SRS may fail to reach YouTube, or the stream may remain live while a viewer has playback trouble. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes reports from one viewer, viewers sharing one network, and viewers on different networks; those patterns help narrow the fault but do not prove its cause.

  • One viewer reports trouble: check that viewer’s device and connection first.
  • Several viewers on the same internet connection report trouble: investigate their shared viewer network.
  • Viewers on different connections report trouble: the encoder or upstream stream path may be involved.
  • The creator sees the encoder disconnect or YouTube stop receiving the stream: inspect the encoder, SRS, ingest settings, and outbound route.

There is no established failure-rate statistic showing that SRS-to-YouTube disconnects are usually caused by networking, RTMP settings, or encoder faults. A useful diagnosis depends on the deployment, version, exact error, and timing.

Why does OBS keep disconnecting and reconnecting to YouTube?

When OBS is the encoder, distinguish a local encoder problem from a downstream SRS or YouTube problem. Check that the encoder software is current, then watch its local preview and, if available, inspect a local recording. If audio or video is already poor locally, investigate the source path, encoder errors, and CPU load before changing the network or ingest URL. YouTube also suggests trying a different encoder if the local archive appears clean but the symptoms continue.

If OBS is publishing to SRS rather than directly to YouTube, OBS’s connection status describes only that leg of the route. SRS must also remain healthy and successfully publish onward to YouTube. Check each link independently rather than assuming an OBS reconnect identifies the failed component.

Check the encoder and SRS at the time of each drop

Record the event and inspect local output

  1. Note the exact time of a disconnect and the message shown by the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room.
  2. Check whether the encoder preview and local recording have missing frames, frozen video, or audio problems.
  3. If local output is unhealthy, inspect the source, encoder errors, and CPU load. If it looks and sounds healthy, continue to the outgoing connection and server checks.

Check the SRS process and logs

SRS sits in the media path, so a healthy encoder preview does not show whether SRS is still running or forwarding the stream. Check the SRS process status and inspect its log around the disconnect timestamp. The SRS project wiki demonstrates checking process status and following objs/srs.log; the exact path and commands depend on how SRS was installed or deployed. Its overview is v3-era documentation, so use it for the general status-and-log workflow, not as version-specific configuration advice: SRS project wiki.

  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

Correlate the encoder’s reconnect time with SRS log entries and YouTube’s stream status. If the SRS process stopped, investigate the service and host. If it remained up, look for publish, connection, or media errors at the same time before changing settings.

Verify YouTube’s RTMP or RTMPS endpoint

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and retrieve the server URL and stream key for the stream you are publishing. Use the currently displayed endpoint rather than a URL saved from an older setup.
  2. Confirm that the encoder or SRS publishing configuration uses the intended protocol and the exact server URL. If you intend to use RTMPS, verify that the configured scheme is rtmps and that the encoder supports RTMPS.
  3. For an SSL certificate error, YouTube advises checking that both the scheme and server are rtmps; if needed, try specifying port 443. For a connection timeout, verify the URL and confirm RTMPS support in the encoder.
  4. Keep the stream key secret. Do not include it in public logs, screenshots, or support posts. YouTube’s setup and troubleshooting details are in Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

Changing RTMP to RTMPS, or changing a port, is not a universal fix. Make a change only when the error and the configured endpoint point to a protocol, certificate, or connectivity mismatch.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Test the outbound network without guessing

If the encoder’s local picture and sound are healthy, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance points to outbound internet strength as a next check: “If your stream looks and sounds healthy, there may be an issue with your outbound Internet connection.” Run the connection test described by YouTube; if it reveals a problem, YouTube recommends contacting your internet provider.

As a diagnostic comparison—not a guaranteed remedy—try the same setup over Ethernet if it is practical. If the behavior changes between wired and Wi-Fi connections, that is evidence that the connection path matters; it does not by itself identify the underlying fault. Avoid treating a cable or a bitrate change as a fix before checking the timestamps and logs.

Use log errors as clues, not universal diagnoses

A 2023 SRS GitHub issue describes repeated RTMP reconnects in a particular SRS 4.0.268 and DJI M30 case. The logs included invalid avc sample length=0 during HLS video handling. The report is a single case: its author said the problem reproduced on apparently good Wi-Fi but could not rule out internet quality or device bandwidth. If you see a similar error, compare the surrounding log entries and your SRS version and media path; the message alone does not establish a universal cause or fix: SRS issue #3702.

Troubleshooting: match the symptom to the next check

What you observe What to check next
Only one viewer reports a problem Check that viewer’s device and connection before changing the broadcast setup.
Viewers sharing one connection report a problem Investigate the shared viewer network.
Viewers on different connections report a problem Inspect the encoder and upstream stream path, including SRS if it is in use.
Local preview or recording is already poor Check the source path, encoder errors, and CPU load; consider a different encoder if the local archive looks clean but symptoms persist.
Encoder output looks healthy, but the stream drops Check SRS status and logs at the event time, then test outbound connectivity.
RTMPS reports an SSL certificate error Verify the scheme and server are both rtmps; YouTube says to try port 443 if needed.
RTMPS connection times out Confirm the current URL and that the encoder supports RTMPS.
A log contains invalid avc sample length=0 Compare the exact surrounding events and deployment details; the reported SRS case is not proof of a general diagnosis.
