Yes—but SRS is not the playlist player. For a no-OBS setup, FFmpeg can read and publish the playlist; SRS can act as a media server or relay between FFmpeg and YouTube when your setup needs one. For a straightforward local playlist, FFmpeg may be able to publish directly to YouTube, making SRS unnecessary. The exact playlist command and SRS-to-YouTube forwarding setup depend on your files and SRS configuration.

What each part does

  • FFmpeg: reads media and acts as the encoder or publisher. The SRS documentation shows FFmpeg publishing a local media file to an SRS RTMP endpoint, but that example is not a universal looping-playlist command. SRS RTMP documentation
  • SRS: a media server that can receive or relay a stream. It does not, by itself, schedule and play a video playlist as a turnkey YouTube streaming feature. The cited documentation describes SRS as a media server and shows an FFmpeg-to-SRS publishing workflow. SRS introduction
  • YouTube Live: receives the encoder feed at its ingest URL. The stream key authorizes the feed and should be treated like a password. YouTube encoder settings

The two common designs are playlist → FFmpeg → YouTube and playlist → FFmpeg → SRS → YouTube. The second adds a server hop; it is useful only if your architecture needs SRS to receive or relay the media.

Choose direct publishing or an SRS relay

Design When it fits What to account for
FFmpeg → YouTube A single encoder can read the media and send the live feed to YouTube. FFmpeg must keep running on a machine with access to the files and a reliable connection. Configure YouTube’s current ingest URL and stream key in the encoder.
FFmpeg → SRS → YouTube Your setup specifically needs SRS to receive or relay the feed. Adds server, network, and configuration requirements. The cited sources do not establish a complete, version-specific forwarding recipe from SRS to YouTube.

For either design, check that the playlist can advance through its files, that audio and video streams are compatible across transitions, and that the selected output transport and codecs suit YouTube. If the files cannot be stream-copied consistently, re-encoding may be necessary.

Prepare the playlist before configuring the stream

There is no safe universal FFmpeg command for every playlist: the right approach depends on the playlist format, file paths, whether the media streams match, and whether you will copy or re-encode them. The SRS example demonstrates publishing one local file to SRS; it does not establish loop behavior for a playlist. Do not treat a single-file example as proof that a multi-file playlist will repeat correctly.

  • Choose the playlist format and confirm how it represents order, file paths, and repetition.
  • Check that each file is readable by FFmpeg and note its video, audio, resolution, and frame-rate characteristics.
  • Decide whether the files have compatible streams for a stream-copy workflow or whether they need to be normalized by re-encoding.
  • Test transitions, audio continuity, and the end-of-playlist behavior before relying on the feed for a long broadcast.

Configure YouTube ingest and protect the key

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its current stream URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. YouTube documents these as the destination and authorization details for the feed. YouTube encoder settings
  2. Prefer RTMPS when the encoder and destination support it; YouTube recommends RTMPS. Follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for a compatible codec and bitrate appropriate to your resolution and frame rate rather than relying on one bitrate for every stream. YouTube recommended encoder settings
  3. Keep the key out of public commands, screenshots, shared logs, and source-control files. If it is exposed, replace or rotate it through the available Live Control Room controls.
  4. Start with a scheduled or unlisted test stream where appropriate. Check the preview, audio, video, and stream-health indicators before making the broadcast public.

SRS’s cited RTMP documentation notes that its RTMPS server capability is version-specific (v7.0.56+). That concerns SRS acting as an RTMPS server; it is distinct from FFmpeg connecting outward to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest. SRS RTMP documentation

Do not confuse YouTube HLS ingest with an ordinary playlist

YouTube’s HLS ingest is a specific transport protocol, not simply a playlist file sent to YouTube. Its requirements include HTTPS POST/PUT requests, MPEG-2 TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments. These are YouTube’s published protocol requirements, accessed in 2026. An ordinary video playlist or an SRS-generated HLS output should not be assumed compliant without checking the actual output configuration. YouTube HLS ingest requirements

Test, monitor, and account for YouTube rules

  • Test with representative motion and audio, including transitions between playlist items, and watch YouTube’s stream-health status.
  • Verify that the stream reconnects as intended after an interruption; do not assume a successful initial connection guarantees recovery.
  • Confirm that you have the rights needed to stream every video and audio track. A technical ability to loop a playlist does not grant copyright permission or guarantee monetization. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies for your channel and content.
  • YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check the current Live Control Room behavior and your stream’s status rather than treating archiving as a substitute for monitoring. YouTube encoder setup
