Record a Puppeteer session as MP4
This complete example launches Chromium, opens a page, records browser actions, and saves the video to recording.mp4. Install Puppeteer in your project first, then run the file in an environment where its browser can launch.

The documented API returns an MP4 video stream. The ScreenRecording object is a readable stream with a stop() method; obtain it from page.record() rather than constructing it yourself. See the Puppeteer Page.record() API reference and ScreenRecording API reference.

A trace is not a substitute for an MP4 replay: it is diagnostic timeline data. Puppeteer permits only one active trace per browser. For still-image capture, the official screenshots guide covers screenshot use and waiting for navigation before saving an image. Trace configuration, including categories and output path, is described in the Tracing API reference.

API maturity and older screencast guidance
The current Puppeteer API reference marks Page.record() experimental. Treat its availability and behavior as dependent on the Puppeteer version and browser/protocol environment in your project; confirm the method in the documentation for the version you install before making it a production dependency.
Puppeteer’s next API reference marks the older Page.screencast() method deprecated and directs users to Page.record(). That reference describes the older flow as WebM with VP9 by default at 30 FPS and requiring ffmpeg. Those details are migration context for the older method, not requirements stated for page.record(). For new recording code, prefer the currently documented API when it is available in your installed version.

Troubleshoot common recording problems
- The method is unavailable: Check the API reference for the exact Puppeteer version in the project.
Page.record()is experimental, and documentation for a different release may not match the installed API. - The output is incomplete or missing the final portion: Ensure
await recorder.stop()completes beforebrowser.close(). The documented lifecycle starts recording, performs work, stops the recorder, and then closes the browser. - You expected a still image or diagnostic trace: Use
page.screenshot()for an image, or tracing APIs for diagnostic timeline data; neither is the MP4 session video produced bypage.record(). - Older code expects WebM or ffmpeg: Verify whether it uses deprecated
Page.screencast(). The current recording method isPage.record(), documented to output MP4.
