Yes. One self-hosted datarhei Restreamer instance can send the same source to two YouTube channels: create a separate publication service for each channel, and give each service that channel’s own YouTube RTMP destination and unique stream key. Then start both services and check each YouTube event independently.
What you need before configuring Restreamer
- Live streaming enabled on both YouTube channels. Each channel must be verified and have live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement can take at least 24 hours after you request it, so do this in advance. YouTube’s simulstreaming guidance
- A YouTube live event for each channel. Obtain the RTMP server URL and unique stream key for each event. Keep the two channel’s details separate and do not reuse one channel’s key for the other.
- A running Restreamer instance. The current quick-start documentation describes a Docker deployment. Restreamer also notes that public port forwarding is needed for full functionality; follow its setup guidance and secure the deployment rather than casually exposing management interfaces. - Enough outbound bandwidth and server capacity. Two destinations mean two outgoing streams. YouTube’s guidance gives an example of 6 Mbps plus 4 Mbps, or 10 Mbps total, and recommends upload capacity of 1.5–2 times that combined bitrate: 15–20 Mbps in that example. This is an example, not a universal setting or a guarantee that a particular host can handle the workload.
Configure two YouTube destinations
- Create or identify both YouTube events. Open YouTube Live for the first channel and copy its RTMP server URL and unique stream key. Repeat for the second channel. The official Restreamer YouTube guide describes entering the destination as an RTMP URL that includes the streaming ID.
- Open Restreamer’s publication services. Add a publication service for the first YouTube destination. Enter the first channel’s matching RTMP destination details; select the YouTube publication service if offered by your version, and enter its valid stream key.
- Add a second publication service. Repeat the setup with the second channel’s RTMP URL and its own unique stream key. The current Restreamer publication-services manual says you can create any number of services. It documents the architecture, though not a dedicated side-by-side walkthrough for two YouTube channels.
- Start both services. Start each publication and allow a few seconds for the stream to appear. In YouTube Live, confirm that each event receives its own preview before treating the setup as ready.
- Check bandwidth and health while live. Add the target bitrates for both outgoing streams, ensure upload capacity has headroom, and monitor YouTube’s Stream health indicators for each event. YouTube emphasizes that upload speed is critical for simulstreaming.
Plan bandwidth, protocols, and server capacity
Estimate outbound bandwidth
For a rough planning estimate, add the target bitrates of both outputs, then use YouTube’s suggested 1.5–2× upload headroom. For example, its 6 Mbps and 4 Mbps targets total 10 Mbps, implying 15–20 Mbps upload capacity. Measure the connection under realistic use; other network traffic can reduce the bandwidth available to Restreamer.
Understand Restreamer’s publication input options
Restreamer’s manual documents HLS, RTMP, and SRT as publication input choices. Its stated handoff latency figures are HLS at a minimum of 10–30 seconds, RTMP at 1–2 seconds, and SRT under 1 second. These describe the documented protocol handoff, not end-to-end latency for viewers watching on YouTube.
Do not assume a universal server size
The documentation does not specify a minimum CPU, memory, network, or encoding configuration for two simultaneous YouTube outputs. YouTube’s bitrate example addresses upload planning, not whether a particular Restreamer host has enough processing or network capacity. Validate the actual host by starting both outputs and monitoring its resource use and both YouTube events’ stream health.

End the broadcast without losing the YouTube archive
If you want YouTube to save the stream to its DVR archive, end the stream on YouTube first, then stop or interrupt Restreamer. The Restreamer YouTube guide warns that interrupting Restreamer mid-stream may prevent YouTube from saving the stream to its archive.
Troubleshoot common failures
- One channel receives no preview: Check that its publication service is started and that its RTMP URL and stream key belong to that channel’s event. Confirm the event is live and wait a few seconds after starting the service.
- Both outputs use the same channel: Review the two publication configurations. Each must point to a different channel’s event and use that event’s unique stream key.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops: Compare combined target bitrate with available upload capacity, account for other network use, and check host network and processing resources. YouTube’s 1.5–2× figure is a planning recommendation, not a fix for every host or network issue.
- A channel cannot start a live event: Verify that live streaming is enabled for that specific channel. First-time activation can take at least 24 hours after requesting it.
- The replay is missing: If archiving matters, end the broadcast through YouTube before stopping Restreamer; interrupting the source first can prevent the DVR archive from being saved.
