To benchmark Puppeteer well, time a fixed automation task under controlled conditions, repeat it, and report the distribution of results—not just the fastest run. Measure task latency separately from browser runtime metrics, traces, and Lighthouse audits: each answers a different performance question.
Decide what performance you are measuring
Puppeteer is a JavaScript library for controlling Chrome or Firefox through the DevTools Protocol or WebDriver BiDi, as described in the official Puppeteer guide. “Puppeteer speed” is not a single measurement. Choose the question first, then select the measurement that answers it.
- Automation task latency: how long a defined workflow takes, including whichever steps you place inside the timing boundary—such as browser startup, navigation, waits, selectors, interactions, and extracting results.
- Browser runtime metrics and traces: what the browser is doing during a run, useful for diagnosing runtime behavior and bottlenecks. Puppeteer exposes page metrics and tracing in its Page API; traces can be inspected in Chrome DevTools or a timeline viewer.
- Page performance audits: how a page performs under a Lighthouse audit. Lighthouse can be used programmatically as a Node module, including for public or authenticated pages; its results are not a measure of Puppeteer execution speed. See Lighthouse documentation.
Keep these results distinct in reports. A slow task may reflect automation waits or startup overhead, while a slow page audit points to a different layer.
Design a repeatable workload
Choose a representative scenario
Use a task that resembles the work you need to compare: for example, a stable navigation-and-interaction flow, a crawl of a fixed set of pages, or a repeated UI operation. Keep the target page or fixture and test data consistent. Control network conditions where practical; if they vary, record that variation rather than treating runs as directly equivalent.

Set timing boundaries
Write down exactly when the clock starts and stops before collecting results. Decide whether browser launch and teardown belong in the main latency number. If both fresh-browser and already-running behavior matter, measure them as separate scenarios instead of mixing them into one figure.
Pin the environment
For every comparison, record Node.js and Puppeteer versions, browser build, operating system, CPU and memory environment, headless or headful mode, and whether the connection uses CDP or BiDi. Run compared configurations under equivalent conditions. The Chromium BiDi benchmarks separate protocol, operating system, and browser-mode categories; the page, last updated 2026-09-17, also flags known flakiness for some Mac comparisons. Avoid pooling unlike environments without showing their separate results.

Run the benchmark and keep every outcome
- Choose a warm-up policy. Decide whether to warm up the browser or workload, and apply the same policy to each configuration.
- Repeat measured runs. Save the duration of every run along with success, failure, or timeout status. Do not select only the quickest successful result.
- Collect relevant runtime data. Use Puppeteer page metrics or CDP runtime metrics when they help answer the question. The Chrome DevTools Protocol Performance domain supports enabling collection and retrieving current runtime metrics.
- Summarize the distribution. Report a median plus a spread measure, such as percentiles or interquartile range. Include failures and timeouts alongside latency. The cited documentation does not prescribe a universal run count, pass/fail threshold, or sample size; choose one suited to your workload and disclose it.
A single fastest run hides normal variability. A workload-specific baseline and target are more useful than a universal Puppeteer speed claim: the available benchmark sources describe comparison categories and measurement interfaces, not one pass/fail number applicable to every task.
Use traces and Lighthouse for the right questions
Trace representative runs to diagnose slow work
Capture a trace for a typical or slow run when you need to inspect browser activity. Puppeteer’s Page API supports tracing. Treat trace collection as diagnostic instrumentation: unless your benchmark explicitly measures instrumented runs, do not include its overhead in the uninstrumented latency result.

Run Lighthouse separately for page audits
If your question is page loading or runtime performance, run Lighthouse using a declared configuration and report its audit results separately from Puppeteer task timing. A Lighthouse score describes an audit outcome, not how quickly Puppeteer carried out your script.
Compare configurations without hiding differences
When the benchmark compares alternatives, show the dimensions that can change the result rather than collapsing them into a single ranking.

| Comparison axis | How to report it |
|---|---|
| Protocol | Compare CDP and WebDriver BiDi only where both are supported and the setup is equivalent; label the protocol for each result. |
| Operating system | Report operating systems separately or stratify the results. Do not pool Mac and Ubuntu runs without showing the split. |
| Browser mode | Identify headless shell, new headless, or headful mode for each run; these are separate categories in the Chromium benchmark page. |
| Measurement layer | Label whether a value is end-to-end task latency, a runtime metric or trace observation, or a Lighthouse audit. |
| Reliability | Show failures and timeouts with latency results, and identify known flakiness where relevant, including the caveat reported for some Mac comparisons on the Chromium benchmark page. |
Make results reproducible
A useful benchmark report gives another developer enough information to understand what was measured and repeat it. Publish or retain:
- The scenario, target page or fixture, test data, and timing boundaries.
- Node.js, Puppeteer, browser, operating system, machine environment, browser mode, and protocol versions or settings.
- The warm-up policy, number of measured runs, per-run durations, summary statistics, and failure or timeout outcomes.
- Network conditions or their variability, plus relevant raw data and trace artifacts.
- Separate Lighthouse configuration and results if page audits are part of the evaluation.
Or skip the browser setup
If the job is simply to capture a website screenshot rather than benchmark a Puppeteer workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. For example, using cURL:

Troubleshooting benchmark results
- Results swing widely between runs: check whether network conditions, browser startup state, test data, or machine load changed. Keep conditions consistent where possible and report the spread rather than hiding it.
- One configuration appears faster only in its best run: compare distributions and include unsuccessful runs; do not use the minimum as the headline result.
- A trace run is slower than an ordinary run: trace collection adds instrumentation. Keep diagnostic runs separate unless instrumented latency is the intended metric.
- A fast task result conflicts with a poor Lighthouse result: the measurements describe different layers. Report the workflow timing and page audit independently.
- A protocol or platform comparison is inconclusive: verify that browser mode and other conditions match, stratify by operating system, and disclose known flakiness instead of generalizing from mixed runs.
