If your YouTube stream keeps disconnecting, first identify where the break occurs: the video source, Datarhei Restreamer, the network path, or YouTube’s ingest. Match the time of the interruption with Restreamer’s process details and YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped health errors before changing settings. “Restreamer” can also mean Restream, a separate hosted service; their controls and continuity features are not interchangeable.

First, identify which Restreamer you are using

This guide focuses on Datarhei Restreamer, which sends a source to YouTube using the channel’s current YouTube RTMP connection details. Restream is a separate hosted multistreaming service. Its settings and features—including its documented disconnect-protection option—should not be assumed to apply to Datarhei Restreamer.

For Datarhei, trace the path from the original source into Restreamer and from Restreamer out to YouTube. If the source stops arriving, the failure is upstream of YouTube. If the source continues but Restreamer’s output stops, investigate its process and outbound connection. If Restreamer continues sending but YouTube reports an ingest error, use YouTube’s error message to guide the next check.

Pin down the interruption before changing settings

  1. Record the failure window. Note the date and time, including the time zone. Record whether the source is still reaching Restreamer, whether Restreamer shows an outgoing bitrate, and the exact error in the process details.
  2. Check YouTube at the same time. Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect stream health and any timestamped errors around the interruption. YouTube says, “The Live Dashboard and Live Control Room checks for errors in the stream you’re sending to YouTube.” Its error guide distinguishes critical errors from moderate ones; use the actual message rather than treating every warning as proof of a disconnect. YouTube Help: Live streaming error messages.
  3. Compare both sides. If YouTube reports an error at the same time Restreamer’s output drops, the shared timing helps narrow the investigation. A bitrate or “live” status shown in one panel is useful evidence, but it does not by itself prove the entire path is healthy.

Datarhei’s guide explains how to connect YouTube and view outgoing bitrate in Restreamer’s main window. Use the current connection details for your channel; never copy an example URL or stream key as if it were your credential. Datarhei: How can I use YouTube with the Restreamer?

Check the outgoing format against YouTube’s settings

Compare the encoder output with YouTube’s current recommendations for the resolution and frame rate you actually send. YouTube specifies H.264 video and AAC audio; its error guide identifies a different video or audio codec combination as an incorrect format. Check the complete output configuration rather than changing bitrate alone.

  • Resolution and frame rate: Select the row matching the actual output. YouTube’s published recommendations vary by format; for example, the guidance lists 6–30 Mbps for 1440p at 60 fps and 4–10 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for those specific formats, not interchangeable targets. Consult YouTube’s current page before applying them: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
  • Video and audio codecs: Verify H.264 video and AAC audio, and compare YouTube’s exact error if it reports a format problem.
  • Bitrate and rate control: Match bitrate to the chosen resolution and frame rate, and check the encoder’s rate-control configuration against YouTube’s current guidance. Do not borrow a bitrate recommendation for a different output format.
  • Keyframes: Check the keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the stream. If you adjust it, apply the setting to the encoder output and confirm the result in YouTube’s health messages.

The right value depends on the selected output and YouTube’s current recommendations; this guide does not assume one universal setting. If the health error names a specific mismatch, address that mismatch first.

Test upload stability and reduce load if needed

When the source and format look correct but the stream still breaks, test the network path used by the streaming server. A speed result from a different device or route may not represent the connection Restreamer uses to reach its destination.

  1. Measure available upload performance on the relevant route, especially during the hours the broadcast runs.
  2. Compare that capacity with the outgoing video bitrate and allow room for fluctuations and other traffic.
  3. Try wired Ethernet where practical, then observe whether the same interruptions recur.
  4. If instability continues, lower the video bitrate; if necessary, also reduce resolution or frame rate, then check YouTube’s stream-health messages again.

Restream’s Help Center recommends at least 10 Mbps upload to Restream servers and ideally over 25 Mbps, setting video bitrate no higher than half of measured upload speed, and trying Ethernet. It also cites minimum bitrates of 1.5 Mbps for 720p and 3 Mbps for 1080p. These are Restream’s troubleshooting recommendations, published July 15, 2024—not a diagnosis, YouTube rule, or guarantee for every Datarhei deployment. Restream: My encoder’s stream quality is bad.

Use the error to choose the next fix

  • Restreamer’s source stops arriving: Investigate the input source and the connection feeding it. A YouTube ingest setting will not restore a source that has already stopped before reaching Restreamer.
  • The source continues but Restreamer reports a process error or loses output: Inspect the process details and error text. Verify the relevant source, output configuration, and network route before restarting or changing settings.
  • YouTube reports an incorrect format: Check the reported codec or other format issue, then verify the output against YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected resolution and frame rate.
  • Health errors coincide with unstable upload: Reduce bitrate or output demands, test a wired connection, and compare subsequent failures using timestamps from both systems.
  • No matching YouTube error appears: Do not assume YouTube is the cause. Use the Restreamer process details and source status to locate where the output stopped.

Protect a 24/7 broadcast from a brief interruption

A 24/7 workflow needs an operational plan for gaps as well as a stable encoder. Datarhei’s cited setup and troubleshooting material does not establish a universal automatic-reconnect policy, retry interval, reuse of the same YouTube event, or archive behavior after a disconnect. Check the installed Restreamer version and the current YouTube event configuration rather than assuming the stream will resume in a particular way.

Restream’s separate disconnect-protection feature documents a fallback video for its RTMP/SRT setups. Its page says it must be configured before going live and is available on Business or custom Enterprise plans. That documentation does not establish integration with Datarhei Restreamer. Restream: Set up stream disconnect protection.

What to include when asking for help

If the cause remains unclear, Datarhei’s basic troubleshooting guidance recommends inspecting process details and including useful project information when opening an issue. Provide enough context to reproduce the diagnosis without exposing credentials:

  • Restreamer version and a description of the source-to-Restreamer-to-YouTube topology.
  • The interruption time and time zone, plus whether the source and outgoing bitrate continued.
  • The relevant Restreamer process errors and matching YouTube health messages.
  • Configuration details needed to understand the output, with stream keys and other credentials removed.

See Datarhei: Basic Troubleshooting. Do not put a stream key in a public issue, log excerpt, or support ticket.
